The 5700X3D deserves a shoutout here as well. The 5800X3D is technically better, but the performance difference is marginal, and the 5800X3D costs maybe 60% more than the 5700X3D if you can even find a 5800X3D.

I did a 5700X3D upgrade build for someone this year who wanted to reuse a DDR4 kit from a Skylake(!) build to save some cash. Lots more flexibility in the budget when you can get it so cheap and it's close enough to the 5800X3D to be in the same league. I think the hardest part about doing an AM4 build now is, retail availability of motherboards. So even if the 5800X3D is really good, it will become more economical to build on new platforms very soon anyway.

At the end of 2023 I owned a used $263 5800X3D for less than a month before I realized how well they sell on the used market. I sold it, a x570 Asus TUF board, 64gb DDR4 3200mhz and upgraded to 7600X, X670, 32gb Trident CL30 6000MT ram for the price I sold my old parts. A month later a 7800X3D was in there as the deals kept coming in. Almost every AM4 rig was sold off that way and upgraded for very very little out of pocket. 7600,7600x,7700x and three 7800X3D all replaced my good AM4 X570/5000 cpu systems because the market would still buy them up. I just waited for very very low prices on AM5 hardware to appear before making each upgrade. Like my last two new CPU's were purchased for $220 7800X3D and $150 7600 on the local market. Made for easy low cost out of pocket upgrades from AM4. Even bought a bunch of AM5 B650 boards for $80 total ea.

If you're already on AM4 then go for it, if building new then go for AM5, the 7500F/7600 + cheapest B650 with M.2's that you want + 32GB RAM = about the price and the performance of a single 5800X3D.
@cameronbosch12132 ай бұрын
@Effect-Without-Cause Yeah, Zen 3 to Zen 4 was a pretty noticeable boost in gaming performance, and the 7800X3D basically took it to the next level. I agree that unless you're already on AM4, just go for AM5. It actually still has an upgrade path, unlike AM4.
@kenshirogenjuro8732 ай бұрын
If you go enough time between builds, the benefits of platform longevity with AMD becomes less relevant. The thing about AM5 is, anyone who built a system on a 7600 for example now has the luxury of being able to wait for the hypothetical 11800X3D in a couple more years and just drop that in the same build. So you can do that major upgrade in between for a whole lot less.

But the 5800x3d was doing it at 71c and the 7600x is doing it at 60c. I also suspect this has a lot to do with the better RAM in the newer mobo as well, since I transfered over the same GPU (4070 Ti Super) to the new build. I undervolted both chips. I put a SLIGHT overclock on the 7600x because I wasn't happy with how little it was boosting in the game, but now it is perfect. Really impressed by these new AMD chips. TLDR; Don't bother with 9700X if you have 5800X3D or better. X3D of any generation is best chip for gaming for most games, even 2 generations old. The results shown here are mostly minimal at 1080p and will be further reduced at 1440p and above. If you're at 4K DLSS/FSR3 Quality (1440 rendered) or 1440p native or higher, you're probably looking at a 5-8% increase in performance AT BEST for an $800-1000 platform upgrade investment (CPU, motherboard, RAM), and only if your GPU can actually push those frames (so 7900XT/4080 or better). Rule of thumb is 25% improvement MINIMUM to actually see ANY difference. In other words, SAVE YOUR MONEY. The PC gaming market is currently stagnant, and even 4 year old CPUs and GPUs are still very relevant. AMD, Intel, Nvidia, and even game developers have gotten even greedier than before, and are attempting to milk us for every penny they can. DO NOT LET THEM.
