The Simpsons didn't have to do it, they chose to. Hari and the others in the documentary just expressed their opinions and shared their experiences growing up and how Apu was a part of that. I'm from the UK, I'm Indian. I was OK with Apu, it used to annoy me sometimes but these days there's better Indian representation in western media and Apu as a character evolved too from what I've heard about the newer seasons. Corporations "cancel" things because of money issues, social pressures and optics all the time. It's just more open and obvious when it happens. They have focus groups and test screenings to see what offends people and they often change things. In the 90s they changed the beginning of Aladdin because there was some wording that was considered offensive by some Arabs, so Disney changed the dialogue. Did you hear about it back then? If that happened these days it would be all over social media. Companies pay attention to social media and public figures. They react to public opinion same as always, except before it was only the opinion of a certain group of middle class white men, now it's broader than that. They aren't just pandering to the same straight white American Christians anymore.

At one point in time I really loved this guys comedy but nowadays I feel like it’s a bit outdated. I would really love to see more working class south asian voices in comedy, and/or more material about internal community struggles we need to address (casteism within the diaspora, islamaphobia amongst Hindus, anti blackness that our community perpetuates, etc). Instead I feel like it’s 2010 again because all the comedy is only focused on upper caste folks who are surrounded by white people and who have a white partner making white people jokes. I’ve just heard this a ton of times already so it’s getting a bit boring
