I like to pretend that the entire year 2000 in WCW never happened, but then I realize that was the year both Steiner and Booker both finally reached the Top, so I reluctantly accept that it actually happened.

This is absolutely bonkers. Today I randomly searched Booker T’s infamous Hulk Hogan promo. After I read an article about Undertaker pranking Big Show by changing his theme music at a house show and JBL told the story. That led to me Googling JBL and then Ron Simmons which then led me to Ahmed Johnson that then led me to Harlem Heat that then led me to Harlem Heat 2000. And now you upload this video 3 hours after I fall down that rabbit hole lol

I think it was around Souled Out 2000 where Russo left WCW. He was then replaced by Kevin Sullivan, I think. So, honestly, we can’t blame Russo for this angle falling flat. I actually kinda wish Russo wasn’t sent home after only 3 months. Maybe this angle could’ve been bigger. Though, not as big as Ahmed, I’m sorry, Big T’s stomach.

I enjoyed Ahmed’s time in WWF. However they had no idea how to book him or what to do with him. Just a constant feud with The Nation, only to end up joining them for no reason. Leave then continue feuding with them.
@jackcarraway4707
@jackcarraway4707 2 жыл бұрын
It really should have been an easy feud to book. They should have given Faarooq the WWE title, have him try to recruit Ahmed as a muscle because he is the perceived biggest threat and eventually have Ahmed win it. You then have Rock lead a coup that overthrows Faarooq and he feuds with Ahmed.
@martynodonnell8467
@martynodonnell8467 2 жыл бұрын
@@jackcarraway4707 problem with this was. Ahmed was renowned for being an unsafe worker. They were never going to push him to the top or give him the belt. Really? I didn't watch much WCW at the time but Harlem Heat 2000 is seared into my memory for a few reasons. The first is the sheer silliness of feuding over the rights to a letter. The second and third are how big Ahmed Johnson had gotten and how damn dangerous he was in the ring.

@@daa589 it’s mostly one sided by the point we’re at now, part way through 97. I’m thinking, by watching the reliving the war series. That WCW got lucky with being noticed when WWF was in a really down period. With Ted Turners money they lured in a few big names from WWF. Then from there the Invasion storyline was born and then the NWO, along with turning Hogan heel. The fans at the time found interest in a company other than WWF. However as far as main event storylines go. That was pretty much it for WCW. Hogan would stay on top, only as a heel feuding mainly with the stars he had in the past 10 years or so. WCW was never some revolutionary company, especially in the main event. This would only become even more apparent as time wore on. My whole outlook on WCW during “The Monday Night War” has changed dramatically through watching the reliving the war series, and were not even half way through 97 at this point. They never knew how to properly book a wrestling show and for the most part were mostly a disaster during The Monday Night Wars. Just for instance look at the booking for the main event of Uncensored 97, and this was long before Russo got to WCW.

Ahmed Johnson was always a sloppy wrestler. The problem is that by this time, he had let himself go, and it was making his already sloppy wrestling a serious issue in the ring. He was as prone to botching as Mongo was. At this point, he couldn't even pull off his finisher without botching. And that's not a hard finisher to pull off compared to a lot of others. Combine that with his complete lack of microphone skills, which pretty much forced them to put him with someone who could do the talking, and he was definitely a liability at this point. He was less of a liability in WWF, but that was when he was in his prime. He definitely had the look. But he really was sloppy, and he lacked that essential microphone skill. Great looks can only get you so far in wrestling.

The former Ahmed Johnson (going by Big T. in WCW) was a shell of his former self by 2000. I'm glad he had a wrestling career after of WWE (then known as WWF) due to being a fan of the guy but he wasn't the same due to eating his ass off and not training after leaving the WWE.

WB is absolutely right - Ahmed had great crowd support at one time, especially all throughout 1996. Anyone who thinks he wasn't popular has no clue. But after all the injuries and etc. he just got lost in the shuffle and the WWF didn't know what to do with him. Fans didn't have a reason to care about him anymore. Which wasn't Ahmed's fault.

This was really good & made me think of when Big Show returned in late 2000’s-early 2010’s. He was super outta shape then. Will you ever cover that time in the future? Or, cover all the heavyweight superstars that were agile?
@jpfischer6003
@jpfischer6003 2 жыл бұрын
WhatCulture usually covers those kinds of lists, (top ten agile big men) but Bam Bam Bigelow, Mike Awesome, and Big Van Vader make the short cut. Other super heavyweights like Yokozuna and Earthquake couldn't come close. Even Sid broke his leg on a middle rope boot spot.

Ahmed entertained me greatly 🤣😂. I just listened to the something to wrestle with episode on Ahmed Johnson yesterday and it sucks how injury prone he seemed to be. He gets a lot of flack for his work both on the mic and in the ring but honestly, when did he have time to improve anything always being laid up with an injury of some sort? I think he could have been exactly what Vince McMahon envisioned him to be if he wasn't made of glass. This wcw run was absolutely terrible though, poor Harlem heat. 😂🤣😂🤣

It's sad what became of Ahmed in just a few years. 1996, first black wwf intercontinental champion. But injuries, injuring people and weight issues ruined his career. If he would have came to WCW in shape in 2000, he could have been dominant and maybe WWF would have brought him back when they bought WCW and also if he would have gotten along with the other wrestlers.

A lot has been written in the past about parts of this subject. Russo was a huge fan of Booker, and planned to push him a singles star. Russo was familiar with Norris (Ahmed Johnson) from his WWF run. Russo has stated many times before that he has never cared about the in-ring potion of the business. He just knew that Norris had gotten over once, and thought he would be able to do it again. I just think he didn't expect Norris to show up 70lbs heavier, and completely out of shape. As Russo was not backstage on a regular basis during Norris's WWF run, he was not aware of the backstage issues, and was not anticipating it to surface in WCW. They felt Stevie needed a partner, and wanted to give him something to do. They only put the original Harlem Heat back together until they could find something else for Stevie to do.

Ah yes, all that "professionalism" that Ahmed exhibited in the WWF just sent the WCW execs clamoring for him in the year 2000. They say hindsight is 20/20 but in this case it's almost the final nail in the coffin.

I got to admit as dumb as it is Booker T having his gimmick taken away I actually found it very entertaining as it seemed fitting for the sue happy 2000s. Felt almost like some of the money inc shenanigans where they would buy or repo something and wrestlers had to make do. Grade A trolling.

Love Harlem Heat, but WCW did the dumbest thing by doing Harlem Heat 2000 on the next to last years of WCW….Now Big T (Ahmed Johnson) is talented but he looked terrible in WCW…The original Harlem Heat breakup helped Booker T the final two years of WCW and Big T (Tony Norris) was long gone months later from WCW…
