Totally agree on the Baker lever. Every time I’ve got one down that far I put one on. They are up to about 90$ now, but it beats gutting the box to replace the shaft, or getting stuck in bum f*ck in the middle of the night cuz your shifter stripped out. All my personal bikes have them. Some people start to balk at the $$ but when I show them what they’re looking at later they pull the trigger. Inner primary off? All new trans seals and a Baker shifter arm.

Does it have tight enough grip to hold already damaged shaft? (Haven’t check it yet, but the stock lever is loose and can’t be tightened. Looking for alternative fir Better lever, as it now comes for 260 bucks.

Jims make a tool to remove the pawl assembly and bushing through the top cover.

Pawl shaft on a 1986 in 2003 80,000 miles 17 years , now my 1995 needs one 80,000 miles 24 years . seems to be the miles not years on the ride . this winter be doing it .

It’s shifts. Lots of shifting, starts to loosen up, more shifting starts to Waller it out. If caught early and a good shift arm put on, the shaft won’t wear out. If it goes too long, shaft time.

I've tac welded at least 4 of these to the shaft with success. Just have water handy to cool it off so it doesn't destroy your seal. Permanent and very reliable fix...

Mine is loose but I’ve checked it the Allen bolt is stripped a little bit so I cannot tighten it. What would you recommend to get that bolt out to replace the shift lever. What tool that I need to remove that bolt

The earlier bikes you have to pull the inner primary to get the shifter off the shaft anyway. Late bikes have room. Once it’s out of the way you can fiddle the bolt out or cut the lever off. There is a lever that’s 2 pieces. You cut the old one off with the primary still in place, with a Dremel tool, then fiddle the two piece on, it’s good, but 200$. The Baker is about 90$.
