This was an awesome video Harli. No wonder you are one of my favorites. Great tip about the spagnum moss and soil, never knew that. I have been obsessed with removing all the spagnum from my propagation before I planted them in soil. Now I know it's not that serious, especially if I'm ruining the root system doing so.

@@EVTD79 PLEASE don’t use spaghnum or peat moss!!! They are essential for wetlands, which are critically endangered and responsible for a third of the world’s oxygen. The harvesting method for these plants is super harmful to the ecosystem and the moss takes hundreds of years to grow so it isn’t renewable. I strongly recommend using coco coir instead, it lacks some of the nutrients that the moss has but there are better ways to get that nutrients for your plant than destroying the planet!

Just a tip: Pothos give off growth hormone and that's why they root so easily. You can put a pothos cutting with other cuttings to make them root faster than all on their own :)
@lesliebegamkenefic59613 жыл бұрын
Every plant puts out natural rooting hormones, that's why when I prop I use minimal water, just enough to cover the nodes, then I don't throw out the water, not until the rooting process is completed

Thanks for another great vid, Harli! I also have a tip with water propagation that surprisingly I haven't seen on KZbin yet. I water propagate in my fish tank when I can, and I've never had any cutting root faster than when they're in there. I'm not kidding that i've has some of my pothos cuttings in there for a month or so and the roots have already taken over half the tank. The fish waste is food for the plants, and helps clean out the tank, too, so it's better for your fish! Just gotta make sure the leaves stay out of the water so they don't rot. Just thought I'd share!
@rdred86932 жыл бұрын
I would be worried about poisoning the fish though. With some of the more toxic plants? If it's a safe plant, sounds like a great idea!

I love water propagating =) Its was my go to method of propagation 🥰 . Now my favorite method is using vermiculite to propagate my cuttings. So I treat vermiculite like ‘soil”. Place vermiculite in a well draining plastic pot. Something that has smaller holes so the vermiculite doesnt leak out from the bottom. Stick the cutting in vermiculite then water the cutting. I make sure that the vermiculite is evenly moistened with the water. Then I wait for the cutting to root =) I have found my cuttings have rooted faster. Sometimes I will even put the cutting thats in vermiculite inside a prop box just to promote even faster root growth. I only water the cutting again when I find that the vermiculite is drying up. I like this method because it evenly distributes moisture as well as air to the roots =)

Every year I used to cut all my great aunts bagonias before the winter came in california with my dad and we'd stick em straight in the mulched garden bed next to the plants they were cut from. The sprinkler system did just fine keeping them hydrating enough. We just poked a hole with a screwdriver and stuck the stem down a good 10 inches under with all the whole leaves intact and everything. No sanitizing, no rooting hormone. I was just amazed as a kid that it worked.

I feel like some ficus propagate well in water because they naturally produce aerial roots. Banyan trees and balete trees produce vine-ish things that are actually very long aerial roots. Also, their main trunk looks like a bunch of thinner trunks wrapped around one another.
