Antonio reminds me alot of myself and my motivation behind working with a local non-profit in my community and committing my life to helping the homeless, mentally ill and substance users in any way i can without bias, prejudice or judgement. My parents were both meth addicts and I watch the majority of my family be consumed by addiction. I've watched friends die from it and have witnessed countless lives torn apart by it. My father was homeless for 25 years in an area called the River Bottom where I live and, though I would visit as a kidsometimes, we could barely have a coherent conversation and he vaguely recognized me. I feel his passion deeply, and hope that he continues to push on and help others.

I'd likely have lost a limb or otherwise be an invalid right now if it wasn't for these facilities. No telling if I'd even be alive. Instead of running around homeless on the streets, I'm concentrating on growing my belly in my own home. I've heard some gnarly and sad tales from older addicts who didn't have access to such support. It might seem like fighting fire with a squirt gun, but the effects are huge. Not just for addicts themselves, but everyone around them. I had to stop watching after 15 minutes. I don't want to go to bed angry and sad. Addiction is a sickness of the whole community. Not taking care of the less fortunate, is like letting your finger rot and fall off instead of taking care of a wound.

I know this is a job and you need to be able to support yourself with it, and knowing that, I'm incredibly impressed with you covering topics like this that don't receive nearly enough empathy. My sister has suffered with addiction since she was 16 and I was 10. For a long time, I stood by her side, but eventually my hope turned into resentment and for many years that resentment stood strong. I've supported addicts, in word, for a very long time but I've never, ever been able to feel that same empathy towards my sis. I went to one a couple times when I was using, and I gotta say it's a really damn good idea. Helped keep me alive long enough to quit, and I don't have any significant lasting health issues from my time as an addict which is kind of remarkable! In my experience, the argument that it makes people more likely to use isn't sensible because nobody who has just started using would likely go to a harm reduction center. I mean.. put yourself in that situation. Do _you_ want to go to a place like that and ask for needles and whatnot? Would that make you feel good about yourself inside? No, of course not. It feels.. not great lol. I remember thinking "damn, I've really let myself go.. I can't even afford to buy my own paraphernalia!", which I would have to imagine contributed to later choosing to quit. Antonio is a really good person. That's all I can really say after watching this video. Dude is saving lives and recognizing the humanity in a lot of the people that don't normally get that taste of human decency. I'm not normally big on fundraisers but I couldn't help but throw some cash to his charity. And honestly, so many people look down on these people. I can't lie, I certainly do too at times. It's frustrating as all hell, but then I just ask the question: How'd they get here? I've never had a problem chatting with homeless people. And when I chat with them, it's often just little things that snowballed the wrong way. A family member died. A hospital bill bankrupted them. A fire burned down their house. And suddenly they go from someone who had an okay life to crashing over the edge and struggling to get by. It's no wonder they come across as terrible people; I can speak from experience that we are the worst version of ourselves when we are struggling to survive. It just magnifies everything. Our anxieties, our frustrations, our trauma. And fentanyl just makes it so much worse. It is *everywhere*. It is cheap, it is plentiful, and it is deadly as all hell if you don't know about it. I just had an old friend die at 30 from a fentanyl overdose. He was a talented machinist, had so many great friends and was generally well-liked by people who knew him. I grew up with him in a small town, and while I hadn't seen him in a while, it seemed like he was living a good life. If a guy like that can die of a fentanyl overdose, almost anyone can. Much love to anyone struggling with addiction. I hope we can, as a society, grow to the point where we deal with this as a medical issue and not a moral one.

Drug epidemic has gone unchecked because it's a deliberate genocide of the mentally ill and "economically unviable" members of the population, who we should be taking care of before we aid foreign wars.

Antonio's story was heart wrenching... Immediately connected with some of my own childhood memories when my parents divorced. Him doing what he does now is the purist outcome humans can achieve. His empathy and his drive to do that is really, really admirable.

...needless to say. im a 32 black guy from the hood. Love your work Andrew. Love how you cover multiple perspectives. Growing up around junkies in my family and hood i feel in different. However i like hearing and seeing someone else perspective. Keep doing what you do bro! We need someone thats not us vs them. We may never get coverage like this through MSM

I hope Antonio is doing ok & is able to keep doing good things to help others. Very sad losing so many family members & he’s an awesome guy to not just keep going, but to make a difference to others & save lives as well.

No surprise. Studies on DARE concluded that participants were more likely to take drugs on completion. All the "just say no" campaigns had exactly the opposite effect to what was intended. .

Dude, I fucking love you so much… I watched this series in the past and just stumbled upon it again today and it made me cry just as hard as the first time. You are genuinely a kind soul and have such valiant honorable and decent character. Thank you so much for showing people the real ugly no frills truth. I wish we could clone you. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope that you continue to grow and grow and continue to spread that basic once-upon-a-time-common-sense-bare-minimum, respect we should all be showing one another... We need to get back that clearly forgotten human to human decency, regardless of class, gender, skin color, or literally any other method of identification or categorization, or any measure, or means of division or judgement. If you haven't already, would you please consider running for Congress?! Our country needs you in government. You would be so valuable and you are the caliber of Citizen that we need and deserve to have representing us in Washington DC or even at a local level.

When I was in rehab in San Fran I worked at The Gubbio Project for almost 3 years. It was one of the best jobs I have ever had. Being there for the homeless community after being homeless for 5 years was a great sense of accomplishment for me. I will never forget it. This story brought back a lot of great memories for me. Even tho San Fran is wild there is a awesome community even in the homeless population there. Sure you see those people messed up on the street but those people are human also. Most are funny, smart and awesome to be around. They are just homeless and in a bad situation. Great story Channel 5👍

This really is how homeless people are. I've been in the streets and my guard is just naturally down. Almost all of them look out for each other and everyone knows who's the bad apples are. Never been treated bad, and they always will help when you need it. It's a real community, that's why after they get clean, get a job, and get stable, they come back to volunteer so much

So why not help the homeless get off the streets and into facilities. Here's a crazy idea! Re-open mental institutions for these people. They need help, not clean needles.

This just seems like the opposite extreme end of war on drugs. Sure harm reduction has benefits but I fail to see how enabling drug use is actually helping those people to get over their addiction.
@Jacopski Жыл бұрын
as someone who has struggled with "soft drugs", harm reduction would only make me continue, yes it helps but only to keep them living until the inevitable happens. They shouldn't be shamed, sent to jail, or left to die but they should be given an actual chance to rehabilitate, which is not what harm reduction is doing. It's good in the short term but they really aren't helping people get out of the deep pit they are in, they are just making the pit last longer.
@SouthJerseyBaitReviews Жыл бұрын
harm reduction just extends the inevitable most people I know who got clean including myself never used those services. Beside for syringes and water the two things addicts need to keep using its just helping them continue using. Yes it may stop the spread of diseases but. Thats really all it does it doesn't really get people clean. It's a bandaid on a bullet wound it will only do so much. People will only change if they wanna change u cant force em nor do it for anyone else u have to do it for u. An u will always be an addict u have to control those urges and any little thing in ur life could bring u back. I've seen people 10-15 years relapse because the person they got clean for either died , divorced em or just left them. Thats all it takes.
