not surprised that the horses got up and looked ok. i've seen a few crashes like this and it amazes me how tough and resilient the standardbred horses are. they are up and racing the next week. that fact that most of the time the horses aren't seriously injured is only more amazing because the accidents of harness racers look so horrible.

Why do they move so stiff and what's with that tight rein hidden in their long manes to hold their heads up?
@cubnation7 жыл бұрын
Dennet Offerman That is called an overcheck rein or bearing rein. It is very cruel because it keeps the horse's head up and prevents him from pulling the sulky, carriage, cart, whatever, with his chest, and forces him to basically pull with his mouth. They don't use them when draft horses pull, because it also prevents the horse from lowering his head. It puts strain and pain on the neck muscles. :-(
@wendygoerl91626 жыл бұрын
Some horses realize they can breathe better with their heads up and will actually hold them higher than the rein requires. And while it is a handicap for heavy haulers, many also consider it a safety device because a horse can't buck effectively if he can't get his head down.

Matthew's Hope had a driver that clearly didn't know what to do. When he hit the rail he did nothing to alert the other drivers and he never pulled the left rein to keep him from going into the other horses. The race is always going to continue if there's at least one horse that can finish. The drivers are aware to stay outside/inside depending where is safe. and keep an eye out for anything. You can't take away from the horses who were able to finish the race. As well as the trainers, grooms, drivers and owners. it is sad to see any accident. but they do happen. I was around and in Harness racing a long time. I've seen many in 38 yrs. this race here is what sparked the no inside rail movement. It took a while first they tried other means Here in the U.S. anyway. There are only pylons that give way when hit. as well as an I don't agree with inside passing lane for the stretch run.
@as4us4 жыл бұрын
The 6 years I've been at the Red Mile, we've had no injuries to driver or horse. A couple when down, but with no hub-rail they went down inside the pylons, with out effecting the other horses.

@bossmare14802 жыл бұрын
Thank goodness that most harness racing tracks have come to their senses by stopping races when there is an accident. In Canada, the tracks now sound a full on track alarm with flashing lights. The entire race is called off (completely stopped) when there is an accident. It becomes a no contest race..... No one is allowed to drive back around through horses/people down on the track. (100% unsafe) Also the tracks have removed the inside rail, replaced it with high density foam pilons and added a safety lane on the inside of the track. This accident could probably been completely avoided if the horse had the option to get out of the way by using a safety lane. Seems like everyone got by with only scrapes & bruises. 🤞🙏

@@imonthewinningside8281 the hobbles are there to assist keeping the gate in fact. sometimes horses get excited during a race and try to gallop and lose their stride, and thats where trouble can start.
@XaviRonaldo02 жыл бұрын
@@imonthewinningside8281 most Standardbred horses are natural pacers. This means both legs on one side move forward at the same time rather than diagonally opposite legs in a trot. The hobbles just help a horse to maintain the gate at a sprint. The pace is a faster gate too and in Australia trot races are extremely rare these days although you may enter a Trotter in a pacers race as it's a slower gate. I believe trot only races are more popular in NZ and don't occur at all in US and Canada.
