My grandfather won a grammy for best engineering for this album. If this is from 1959. No idea if Belefonte recorded at Carnegie Hall more than once.

There ought to be a documentary about your grandfather and all of the people who engineered these Living Stereo recordings. So pioneering. This one takes the cake though. What amazing work - even 70 years later.

Superb equipment and repro. BTW this was the first true stereo recording of Belafonte doing Banana Boat Song. The original hit version was in mono only.

The first great live album, recorded and mixed with painstaking care. This LP presented the first true stereo version of “Banana Boat Song (Day-O),” the second track heard here. Great turntable setup btw.

I think it's a Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC cartridge, about $1,500. It's unique in that it's a mm cartridge but the magnet is small, low mass, very responsive and the cartridge is low output like a mc cartridge. Incidentally, I have this album which someone in my family bought when it first came out. I'm guessing I was about twelve at the time. I need to go play it immediately to see if it sounds anywhere near as good as it does on this video.

Love my VPI table. Also am running a Soundsmith cart at the moment. NiceCombo! Is that the Scout, I'm assuming?
@Stereophonic33
@Stereophonic33 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's actually a Scout Jr. The difference being the Scout has a unipivot tonearm where as the Jr. has a conventional bearing.
@davidfischer8307
@davidfischer8307 8 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. Seems like VPI is only doing unipivots on all their tables from the Scout above. Are you happy with the Scour Jr or thinking of upgrading to another VPI. It Sounds really nice.
@Stereophonic33

Perhaps in the next 6 months I will be considering upgrading my tonearm to Unipivot. It's great all these turntables are upgradable!
