@@MotorHomeBeepBeep I was always fascinated how different they were in real life to one another. Perhaps Brambell’s Irish background played a part in his drinking and the way he came across in life and his relationship with Corbett? But they had a great onscreen chemistry which perhaps wouldn’t have worked as well if they didn’t have the friction between themselves in real life?!

I loved him….he was quite handsome..and as we say he “scrubbed up well!” It’s so sad he died so young…… Lovely peaceful church…Did he actually live somewhere in the village Alan do you know? Seems a lovely quiet place, after all the hustle and bustle of filming on set. By the way! I used to cut up newspaper and magazine squares and thread on string to hang on a nail in my Lancashire grandmas outside privy….it was a pine bench with two oval holes, one smaller for children (me!) and one larger for adults. Special sized buckets underneath each which were removed by opening wooden doors at the back. I can remember going plodding through the snow, desperate for a wee, and how cold and draughty it was perched on the throne…and always huge spiders sitting on the paper…yuk! Those were the days, but I agree, the shiny Sunday supplements were horrible to use! 😂🤣 remember the scene when his dad sat in the tin bath eating pickled onions, which he dropped into the water, yet fished them out and ate….that’s when I remember Harold looking at him in disgust and saying that famous line “ you dutty old man!!” . So sad we have lost that class of good actors, not to mention the damn good writers back then…we had some great writers for dads army, ain’t half hot mum etc. thanks Alan for a cracking walk down memory lane. What a shame his grave isn’t tended better…he deserves that at least. A professional clean, some snowdrop bulbs for spring would make so much difference, but as regards the stone the permission of his children is needed. Hope the see watching this, how much their father is still much loved and we would so appreciate the stone being cleaner and more legible….please? Thanks so much for the wonderful memories you have brought to the fore Alan..really enjoyed. Ps you always worry me, just getting out of your van and not closing the door….opportunists are always around even if you “think” it’s safe, so do be careful. Warmest wishes 🙋‍♀️🥰🥰👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🦉😻🦋🦋🦋🦋

Hello Helen, I've read it now. It was great. They used to say there with a good old days but they weren't. Were they really when you had to use the outside toilet I can imagine in winter it must have been terrible. Not to mention cold. I can remember in my 30s I bought three flats to do up and the guy said to me are you going to make them ensuite bathrooms and I didn't know what he meant :-) everybody now when they buy a property is going about the number of bathrooms. How things have changed?. I don't know that people are always happier though because if you expect more your more easily disappointed. It's all down to expectations. People used to be very happy with little things. Children were happy with less toys so I think it's more of a mental state. But I will never give up my internet central eating and double glazing once you've had it, you never want to go without it. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and thank you for the fantastic reply. @@MotorHomeBeepBeep Hello Alan, that was a nice reply, Thankyou…those days i mentioned were as my grandma’s in Lancashire…and yes! That’s how she lived, and not knowing any different, just accepted it! When my mother married my father, he put a back boiler in her fireplace for her, as up to then, it was boil the kettle for everything. My dad built a bungalow for himself and mum…it took him four years, as just after the war there were shortages of building materials…eveyone wanted it to rebuild where they had been bombed. My parent’s married in 1950, and I honestly didn’t realise how lucky I was, to live in a bungalow with inside toilet and flush, a bath with hot water. I wrongly assumed everyone had it! My new husband ( remarried in June this year aged 70! Lol) says he lived in a council house and the toilet was in an outhouse. Flushed but still cold! No central heating back then, ( I was born in 52) and can remember the beautiful ice patterns that used to form on the INSIDE of my bedroom window! Washing day, using a copper boiler and “possing” clothes before they went through a wringer into a big sink for rinsing, and if they were whites, we had those little Dolly blue bags…made whites look bluey white, and cleaner somehow. Back through the wringer minding not to trap your fingers, then out on the line! No spinners or tumble driers! Xmas time mum made Xmas puddings, we all had a stir and made a wish, and she would wrap a silver 3d in greaseproof paper and drop in the mix…plenty of paper so whoever found it wouldn’t choke. Then the pudding bowls covered with greaseproof, tied with string were balanced un the copper, with so much water just coming up the side, then boiled for nine hours! NINE! This was done in the wash house as the steam! Well…we coukd have opened Turkish baths! I remember going to school and they were steaming and still were when I came back! My mum Always did five. Two for us -Xmas and New Year’s Day…two went away for the following year, and one to another elderly couple in the village ( my mum was District nurse and midwife so knew who was struggling to make ends meet). So that’s given you food for thought Alan! Lol….with all good wishes! Helen 🙋‍♀️🥰😻🚐beep beep! X

I remember the episode with Wilfred crimping the pastry with his teeth. I had mixed feelings about Steptoe & Son when I was younger, although I couldn't work out why. Now that I'm old, I realise that it was very bittersweet black comedy. The father and son locked together in mutual dependence and loathing. From your (as always, excellent) research, it seems the actors shared the same experience.

Elizabeth, what a lovely comments. It was very cleverly written and reflects quite often real life. They loved each other but poor Harold was restricted a very complicated relationship but beneath it all there was love as this often the case in real life. Thank you so much Alan!
