Greetings Harry, this is late, I just found your channel. I like it! A couple bits of old sailing ship trivia I hope you will like . I got all these tidbits from reading over the years....The white ship bottom was beef tallow. Like you said, it was an anti fouling measure. The dark waterline plank was "payed' (covered) with tar. This plank was called the Devil, so you get the sayings "The Devil to Pay" and "Between the Devil & the Deep Blue Sea". Real Nice Work on the St. Louis, I'm looking forward to watching the whole thing.

Love your attention to detail on what is , an old Aiefix kit. Wondering if you are going to apply as much dedication to the rigging with served lines etc. Lookin forward to it !

Yes I am! A little more than I did on the much smaller Revell Bounty kit I rigged last year.

Fyi Wales are strong and thick planks running length wise covering the lower part of the ship. (also see gunwale (pronounced "gun'l") upper edge of Hull at deck level.) plimsolls lines came in for merchant ships around 1876, although not universal until 1930 as the international load line, so a bit after the St Louis was extent. Another great video, thanks.

Isn't there a plank called the "devil, just where the tumble home curves under the hull? This is where the saying "between the devil and the deep blue sea" comes from. Sailors, sat on planks painting or repairing the hull around the devil, would have only the waves beneath them to stop their fall.
@HarryHoudiniModels3 жыл бұрын
Yes Mike it refers to the job of caulking at the water line while at sea. Many drowned trying to do this near impossible task. However the term originates from a much earlier Ancient Greek saying, roughly translated as ‘damnation or drowning’.
@CHIL29033 жыл бұрын
@@HarryHoudiniModels 👍 The matelot's equivalent of between a rock and a hard place. Caulk and possibly drown; don't caulk, likely sink and definitely drown.🙁

I’ve pushed Lifecolor and Hataka.. no issue, and of course even Stynylrez. but having your own airbrush attached is the trick. I’ll show all that when my new one with replaceable batteries arrives.

Hi Harry, she really starting to look good. I'll be interested in how you do the ladders/steps. Also are you aware that there is a flexible super glue? It's fairly new to the market but it;s been mentioned on an American channel I'm subscribed to. It might be worth making inquires about.
@HarryHoudiniModels3 жыл бұрын
I did not know there was a flexible CA glue... sounds impossible due to the chemistry of Cyanoacrylate?

@@HarryHoudiniModels That's what I thought as well. It was mentioned on the Tested you tube channel and also I think on the Punished Props one. I'll see if I can track down more info for ya.

@nikolayalabanco65393 жыл бұрын
Does I mean that you didn’t prime with tamiya primer or any other and apply paint on plastic?
@HarryHoudiniModels3 жыл бұрын
Stynylrez is a Primer! Probably the best water based polyurethane primer available. And as it comes in a variety of colours it can double as your base coat. I have even painted a few models entirely in Stynylrez with just a wash and some detail work brushed on top.
@nikolayalabanco65393 жыл бұрын
@@HarryHoudiniModels oh, so this is the best idea to have a primer and a paint as a base to reduce layers and preserve wood grain as much as possible. Since we don't have Stynylrez and Lifecolor in Russia, what other paints as primer can be used. Vallejo?
@HarryHoudiniModels3 жыл бұрын
Although none are as good as Stynylrez you can get it rebranded as MIG First Shot or UMP Primer. Vallejo do a polyurethane coloured primer, which in theory should work, but I have not tried it. Lifecolor you can buy direct from Italy, however I think Vallejo just released an acrylic wood effect set as well. Once one company has a good idea, the rest copy.
