Yeah in the Prisoner of Azkaban book Snape is a dick at the end. He takes credit for capturing Sirius. Leads the minister of magic to believe that Sirius had put Harry, Hermione and Ron under an enchantment which is why Harry and Hermione are saying Sirius is innocent (Ron was unconscious). Finally, after Sirius escapes Snape flies into a howling rage and blames Harry for the escape. He doesn't know how but he knows Harry had something to do with it. A thought just occurred to me. The level of hatred and anger Snape displayed towards Sirius in Prisoner of Azkaban seemed like overkill for someone who bullied you in school many years ago. I think Snape truly believed that Sirius betrayed Lily. Which means that before his downfall in Godric's Hollow, Voldemort didn't fully trust Snape and maybe believed Snape might be a spy for Dumbledore. Otherwise Snape would have known that Sirius wasn't a spy for Voldemort and would have known and been able to warn Dumbledore that Peter Pettigrew was a spy.

There is also Fleur Delacour who have so much character in her despite how small her role is. I don’t think Snape was inherently a bad person. He is the result of his early experiences & environment. He was more than likely was born with certain character traits & those early life experiences perhaps exacerbated the “darker” side of him. I personally feel he was only ever drawn to Voldemort was because Snape got the recognition he thought he deserved. He was given a sense of purpose & belonging, which he didn’t have as a young child. He experienced a lot of traumas which shaped him. It took a huge trauma in his life to snap him out of the dark side of himself. How he reacts once he knows Harry had to die ect you see the genuine caring side of him. He’s a very interesting character but ultimately I do think there’s more good than bad in him....he was just very lost within the bad side for so long.

That's an awful scene if you think about it from Lily's perspective. Lily ends her friendship with Snape six years prior because Snape was PLANNING to be a Death Eater, he was calling her AND other muggleborns mudbloods, and he was defending his friends using dark magic to bully another student (it's only bad when James does it, right) and keep in mind this is when people are already afraid to use Voldemort's name...they knew what he stood for and what he and his Death Eaters were willing to do to achieve that. After Lily ends their friendship Snape JOINS the muggleborn murdering terrorists, spies for them and who knows what else, he relays the prophecy about a CHILD who cold threaten Voldemort's reign and when word gets out that Harry Potter was Voldemort's target the Potters go into hiding. So Lily is in hiding with her husband and her baby only for Snape's "Dark Lord" to burst in, murder her husband, murder her, and attempt to murder her child and after all that poor little Snape comes to step over her husband, fondle and cry over her corpse, and ignore the crying baby he would later go on to use his position of authority to bully, belittle, and abuse. The scene is gross.

I think torturing the kid in front of his parents would be a more effective way to get information out of the Longbottoms. Second, Snape got the photograph at Grimmauld Place. It was with a letter that Lily had sent to Sirius. Snape never set foot in the Potters house after they were killed. That only happened in the movie. Third, asking what Snape would have done if Voldemort had targeted the Longbottoms first is just silly. Snape had no connection to them at all so of course he wouldn't have done anything. I'm not saying its right. It just is what it is. As for the prophecy, I doubt Snape was aware that Lily had had a child. He hadn't been in contact with her in years and I daresay that the birth of any children in the Order of the Phoenix was kept tight lipped out of fears that Voldemort would use the children to get to the members of the Order. I'm pretty that had Snape been aware that Lily had a child and if there was even the remotest possibility that the prophecy could mean her child, Snape would have never told Voldemort what he had heard of the prophecy. If I were a betting man I would say Voldemort learned of both Harry and Neville through Peter Pettigrew. Finally, Snape was a bully you'll get no argument from me on that. I think Snape bullied Harry and Neville because they were constant reminders of the mistakes Snape made in life. Harry is the spitting image of Snape's school bully but has the eyes of the woman he loved whom he inadvertently betrayed. Neville is the "what could have been". "If only the dark lord had gone after him first". I'm sure that goes through Snape's mind every time he sees Neville. What it boils down to is Snape's own self hatred for the poor choices he made in his life and deals with this self hatred and anger the only way he knows how. By taking it out on someone else. The same way his parents did to each other and him.

Yeah. People often defend Snape because he is an interesting character and maybe they're under suggestion of that "the bravest man" line from Harry. But there's not much you can say to defend him from a moral perspective. In the end, he ended up fighting on the right side but for the wrong reasons. He didn't turn against Voldemort because he saw something wrong with all the violence and persecution of innocent people Voldemort's followers were famous for. He only did that out of resentment for contributing to the death of the only person he cared about. Some people point being bullied as a child as not an excuse but it's not. I was bullied too but I can't imagine I would take it out on some innocent children as an adult man. If anything it should make him more conscious about not hurting innocent people if he had any good in him but he doesn't seem to care.

"You have your mothers eyes"- Severus Snape, The Deathly Hallows film. After watching the films and reading the books, I most definitely believe Snape was worthy of redemption! He had done so well as a double agent and really, technically, it was all for Harry;to protect Harry. Harry was the son of the boy he hated and the girl he loved. Yet every time he looked into Harry's eyes it reminded him of her, of Lily. Harry had relized all of this within a few minutes. Within a few minutes he realized that everything Snape had done was for him, to keep him safe. Harry had most likely forgiven him in that moment or soon after the battle. Snape had been extremely brave to have done all of this and become a double agent, fooling even Voldemort. Harry had seen this. Severus Snape is more than worthy of redemption:)

I might get some bad comments on this, but, in the books, Snape only wanted Lily protected. Just her. He asked Voldemort originally, and, when Voldemort refused, then he went to Dumbledore. When Snape asked Dumbledore to protect Lily, he didn't give two shits about James or Harry. It was only when Dumbledore called him out on his bullshit that Snape said "fine protect them all then"(not direct quotes)
@dansharp28603 жыл бұрын
Totally agree but I would like to note that Voldemort didn't actually refuse Snape's request to spare Lily. We don't get the scene in the books but it's clear that Voldy at least considered Snape's request because that is the only reason he offers Lily her life to step out of the way and let him kill Harry. Had Voldemort flat out refused then he would have killed Lily the moment he stepped in the room. During the flashback in Deathly Hallows Voldemort even seems to somewhat regret having to kill Lily presumably because he told Snape he would try to spare her. Snape goes to Dumbledore because he knows he cannot rely on Voldemort to not kill Lily because he knows Lily will put up a fight to save her son and Voldemort's first instinct is to kill anyone in his way.

Snape is grey to me, he's not entirely good and not entirely bad. Snape had a bad family life, and so did Harry. We know it doesn't matter where we come from, but who we grow up to be. And Snape grew up to be a jelous snitch and a bully to his students. A man so blinded by hatred that he could never see Harry for who he was, he only saw him as another James Potter. He was racist towards muggle borns, (also, remember he called Hermione a mudblood while talking to Dumbledore) got involved into the dark arts, probably killed people like all death eaters did, and he told Voldemort about the prophecy. He only changed sides because Lily's life was in danger. It's hard to call someone a hero for going against something evil he worked to build. If the chosen one was Neville instead of Harry, Severus wouldn't have given a damn, as he did with James and Harry. He only wanted to protect her, not her husband and son. He walked over James's dead body that night in Godric's hollow. Protecting the Potter's son was the least he could do, since he was the cause they died in the first place. He protected Harry physically and bullied him verbally. Severus was never fair to his students, always favouring his own house, always trying to put others down. And he only protected Harry because he was Lily's son. He never cared for her son, just for her. And to those who say "it's because of James's bullying", it really isn't. It was his jealousy, hatred and bitterness. James was a boy when he bullied Snape. He was just a 15 year old, Severus was a grown man. And bullying people because a similar thing happened to him just shows how much of a git he was. But then you got Alan Rickman's Severus Snape. An entirely different character in my eyes. I loved his performance and I can't help but feel sympathy for movie Snape.

I see Snape as a bad person who ultimately did good things, and even then it’s not like he did those good things because it was the right thing to do. There’s an argument to be made that, had Voldemort picked Neville to kill instead of Harry, Snape might still be a Death Eater because he only stopped being one after Voldemort killed Lily. There’s also the fact of how the way he acted for much of his life was motivated by “a schoolboy grudge”, as Lupin put it (him or Sirius). Really, Prisoner of Azkaban showed how petty Snape could be considering he was fully prepared to let Wormtail get away with his crimes if it meant Sirius and Lupin ended up in Azkaban (or worse, having received the Dementor’s Kiss) even though he knows Lupin wasn’t in on the prank Sirius pulled on him. Then, of course, there’s the way he treats his students: Using potions on Neville’s toad as punishment, not helping Hermione when she got hit in the face with a jinx, etc. It’s more than just showing favoritism to students from Slytherin, it’s being downright cruel to ones from the other houses (especially Gryffindor). And of course, there’s the way he treats Harry. A lot of people seem to excuse it as him treating Harry horribly to keep Voldemort’s trust, but it’s clearly mostly his way project his hatred of James onto him, even from the moment he first saw Harry. He never gave Harry a chance to show that he isn’t like James and every perceived wrong Harry does is justification for how Harry treats him. Anyway, what I’m getting at with all of this is that even if Snape wasn’t a Death Eater, he clearly would still be a really shitty person. And while we can talk about how much of what he became was influenced by his home life or bullying, he’s done way too much stuff that isn’t justifiable.
@tjjordan4207 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if Severus would have become a shitty person if he hadn't become a Death Eater, because a lot of what drove him to become darker was the brainwashing of his classmates in Slytherins. And yes, the bullying from James pushed him but if he was in a better environment with someone to help guide him, he could have become better. I know someone who was bullied at a terrible but had the environment of loving parents to keep him on the right path. Sometimes the simplest of changes can be enough.

@@snowysobsessed You definitely have to re-read them, if you seriously believe that. Snape's one of the most horrible people in the books (he's as terrible as Umbridge, the only difference being that he doesn't hold the same authority). Doing good deeds for the wrong reasons doesn't make you a good person! Maybe you forgot, but he bullied the majority of his students (yes, actually bullied them), hated Harry - the child of the one person he claimed to love - for no good reason (resembling his father and having some of his personality traits doesn't give Snape the slightest excuse whatsoever) and tried to make his life hell (which wasn't just an act to keep up his pretence, that stupid argument doesn't even make the slightest bit of sense). He actively and willingly joined a Nazi group and happily sold out a family with a new born child to Voldemort, only to then realize that his actions might have condemned his former best friend to death, but what he proceeded to do was to beg for Lilly's life and hers ONLY, not caring one bit if James and Harry (the people Lilly loved most, one of them an innoecent child at that) got killed - how can you claim to love someone and not care at the same time, if the people they love die? Snape never actually cared FOR Lilly, he wanted her alive because it pained HIM to see her dead, but he didn't care how much she would've suffered after losing her husband and son. All of that's got nothing to do with love, in fact it just shows how little empathy he had, even for the people he cared about. Clearly Snape is neither capable of loving someone nor does he care about anyone but himself, he's the most vile character you could find and people like you blindly defend him just because it turned out he owed Dumbledore a favor and was essential to Voldemort's downfall. After he fulfilled his promise to Dumbledore to kill him, there was not a single enjoyable moment left in his life. And he knew that would probably happen if he followed through with the plan. Someone said it below, but I always found Snape intriguing largely because of how he was portrayed, but in The Prisoner of Azkhaban, when he immediately blocks the trio from Remus' werewolf, it definitely gave us a glimpse into his murky depths. Also, after all the misdirection with Quirrel in the first book, I think people tended to overlook what was Snape doing and it was a counter curse, but we only find that out much later. His attention to Harry might have been tough, but at the same time, he couldn't let anyone see he cared so our lens for him was always through the eyes of a boy. Until that boy saw all of him, we couldn't either. I loved Snape's story, it's so tragic.

I think it's worth noting Snape only stood between the trio and Remus in the movies, in the books he couldn't control his temper, told Harry he was better off dead, and got knocked out by the trio in the shack. Sirius protected the trio in the book.

I posted this under your last video, but no one has seen it so I post it here again. Don't worry, this is the last time and I won't spam you. I have a very unpopular opinion about Voldemort and would LOVE to see a video about this. I actually believe that Voldemort was a victim and did not deserve his faith. His mother basically raped his father who was under the influence under the love potion, which led to a curse because it was against the will of the father who never loved her. So the child was born with the curse, which is, not being able to love and being a psycho. When Harry said in the last book "Try some remorse" or something like that, Voldemort laughed, because he was unable to his entire life, for him it was normal not to feel any remorse. It's like telling a blind person "try to see". The person would think you are stupid on so many levels. The actual reason why all this happened is because of Merope Gaunt, who was so desperatly in love and horny, that she did the deed. I think if Tom Riddle Sr. actually loved her back, Voldemort would be able to love and would be some high rank person as Tom Riddle in the Ministery of Magic. The REAL bad people are the Death Eaters around Voldemort. They ARE in fact able to love, but they CHOSE to be so evil. Voldemort was evil because of a cursed love potion. This is not stolen. I thought about this by myself. If there is a video about that somewhere, I didn't watched it. Give me the link if there is one.

Would say Snape is fundamentally a good person. Sometimes you have to test your moral character in terms of doing "bad things" to fight against bad people. Only a monster can defeat a monster. But you need to have an outstanding will from becoming corrupted. Snape and Zuko are probably the greatest examples of a redemptive character arc.

I feel like the point of Snape isn't being good or bad but being human and dealing with circumstances that had been thrust upon him for his own survival. I think he was weak when he was younger as he had been bullied his entire childhood by James and he sought the dark arts to protect himself and make himself feel strong. Only once he realised the consequences of dark magic and the tragic fate of the one person he loved lily which was due to him ng Voldermort information on the prophecy did he finally grow up and take responsibility and help dumbledore. When Harry came to school his looks reminded him of James who bullied him and the painful memories caused Snape feel cool towards Harry. Snape was not correct to bully Harry but he was hurt and he was human he had a complex backstory that led to the good and bad decisions that he made that's the beauty of the character of Snape he is not specifically good or bad as he doesn't do anything for specifically the correct reasons he is human. He fights on the side of Voldermort to protect himself and to stop being a victim he later fights against Voldermort because he felt guilty for Lily's death and wanted vengeance and to protect lily's son the last piece of lily on that Earth. He's different to do gooder dumbledore and Harry who fight Voldermort to protect Muggle Born's and muggles Snape is human and does things for his own complex reasons Sorry it's so long If you think about it without Snape Voldermort would never have been vanquished either time. If Snape hadn't told Voldemort the prophecy which led to Voldermort going after Harry Voldermort would have continued to grow powerful and have no opponent. And if Snape had never left his memory Harry would not have known he needed to sacrifice himself to destroy the horcrux inside him. So whether you like Snape or not he is vital for the story line and adds another dimension to the Harry Potter series

And then the cycle started over
@WiccanRai3 жыл бұрын
Snape was a complex character for sure. He wasn't inherently bad, but he was far from good. He became a death eater, perhaps under some twisted feeling of belonging. Yet his love for Lily enabled him to do the right thing, often putting himself in danger in order to do so. What things did he get up to under Voldemort's instructions? He protected Harry for Lily, posthumously, and for Dumbledore. But he did so with some resentment as Harry reminded him of James, holding a grudge for all those years even after James's death. And then there's the way he favoured his own house, and was a bully to the likes of Neville and Hermione too, and probably other students. Doing good deeds does not necessarily make you a nice person. He was a victim of his own circumstances, never fitting in in the muggle world, but neither finding acceptance at Hogwarts either due to the divide between Slytherin and the rest of the houses. Had he been able to stay friends with Lily and been accepted more by the Marauders, he may have turned out differently.

Snape was a man of contradictions. He shamed wearing emotions on sleeves but failed to avoid doing that after learning that Harry saw his worst memory. He was a Slytherin and yet arguably braver than any Gryffindor we read about. Seemed to hate Harry more than any other student and yet arguably tried to protect Harry more than anybody. Hounded Harry for allegedly being arrogant yet favored Draco Malfoy, a very arrogant person. Really wanted to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts and yet seemed to love the dark arts more than most. Possibly one of the more ambivalent characters in all of fiction.

Snape may have been a good character and a complex and interesting character, but I don't think he's a great person. Maybe an occasionally good person, but not someone I'd want to look up to or admire. He was abusive and cruel to his students (even if he still cared enough to protect them, it doesn't make it okay). Yes you can be stern as a teacher but there is a line between stern and abusive, and he crossed it. What's the point of becoming a teacher if you don't like kids, or you're too busy bullying them to teach and they're too busy being bullied to learn. I also think he was more in love with the idea of being in love with Lily, rather than her as a person. Snape is a bully, James Potter probably was one too, but the difference, I think, is that James grew up, changed, and moved on with his life, while Snape wallowed and moped in bitterness about not getting the girl after he called her a racial slur, and then preceded to take out his frustrations and bitterness on his students.

I don't want to write a novel about why Snape is my favourite, but what got me to like him in the first place was his sarcasm (that always makes me laugh, no pun intended). When he didn't survive, it was so tragic to me that I started to consume anything Snape-related - mainly fan fiction, of course - and the deeper I delved into his story the more I learnt... He taught me not to judge a book by its cover... a few years later I got a lecturer who reminded me a bit of him and that lesson paid off - after I got to know her she was the best teacher and one of the most reliable and loyal people I've ever met. I don't condone everything he did, that would be mad, but in the end we're all not perfect and given a new chance at life after the war, who knows what he could have achieved? I honestly believe that he tried to be as good as he could all the time after he switched sides but his past and unresolved trauma was in his way all the time... *end of novel*

Actually, he's more of an antit-hero. A double-agent for both sides of the Wizarding War.

I remember reading the books and watching the movies. After watching the first movie, my dad sensed Snape was a good person. I was already sold on his Dumbledore allegiance in the second book, and during the fifth book, predicted Lily Potter might've influenced Snape to stay away from the Death Eaters.

He was a good guy, but a git nonetheless. I mean, he bullied harry, neville and any non-slytherin so much! And remember in third year, he was responsible for Sirius' name not getting cleared. Just because of a petty childhood rivalry and sadistic pleasures he said that sirius had confunded them.

@Ariadna Melo yes! And Lupin had to quit because of him!

Can’t say I blame Snape. His relationship with Sirius and Remus include 7 years of bullying and humiliation. Not only that, there was the time when Sirius played a “prank” that could’ve either gotten Snape killed or turned into a werewolf. The headmaster didn’t expel them for this either. Which was seen as favoritism by Snape which it was. Either way, he considered Lupin as a danger not because of his personality but because of his affliction.

@Ariadna Melo but doesn't wrongfully getting imprisoned in a place like Azkaban enough for TWELVE YEARS enough?

Moreover, in the books it's clearly stated that the Marauders matured a lot after seventh year and even if there was a conflict they weren't the one who instigated it. It was Snape himself who started any confrontation! And they were just kids. See, I got bullied too as a kid and I am shameful to admit I bullied too (only verbal though). But you grow out of it, right? He is supposed to be in his 30s!

@@mayukhdutta9393 The Thing is though is that I would have expect them to mature after the Werewolf incident which happened in the 5th year before the “mud blood” incident. Considering that their actions almost gotten another person killed that should’ve been the motivation to just cease with their pranks. But they don’t and they continue on as if it never occurred. They continue to bully and prank others and the supposedly “mature” in their last year.
