Hey folks! Currently in the midst of formulating a script for the final Chibnall episode: Power of the Doctor! It's gonna be a long video (naturally, the ep was nearly 90 minutes long) so hang tight, all my creative energy is going into that right now. Support: www.patreon.com/harrysmovingmedia

As a Russian-speaking bloke I do welcome the lack of ""Яussian"" accents. I did like the approach taken by "Chernobyl" (HBO): Since every single line of dialogue would be in good/perfect Russian or Ukrainian originally, why should we hear broken English? English just 'replaces' Russian/Ukrainian here - it's not Russians/Ukrainians actually speaking English.

In war movies accents are good for telling who is meant to be on who's side eg French have French accents Germans have Germans so we know who is who. Without them having to say "I am French" or "my name is Heinreich" so we know who is who

My ex was Ukranian and she pointed out to me that 90% of shows with russian characters have terrible accents. Interestingly enough I showed her Gary Oldman's performance as Viktor Reznov from Call of Duty and she said he did a good job in that.

think people doing fake Russian accents would have been more offensive i think . people would have come from all sorts of parts of russia makes sense to me

@@timelordvictorious do you mean that Russians have different accents? Mainly, we don't. Except for a few telltale details, you can't figure out where a person is from by their Russian speech. It's very different to British and American accents.

I kind of enjoy the fact that none of the Russian characters have an accent. If the TARDIS is transmitting a perfect translation of whatever a character is hearing, why wouldn't it do so in that character's dialect? It reminds me of the creative decision in The Death of Stalin to have all the actors speak in their natural accent. When writing a work set in a foreign country, you have the choice of either filming in the original and subtitling, or just relying on the audience's suspension of disbelief in accepting that we are hearing an "interpretation" of what the characters are saying in-universe in their native language. Trying to take a middle-ground approach of accented English can work, but I feel like it can also be a bit cheesy/clichéd - in any case, I wouldn't see it as more authentic than simply taking the "natural English" approach

Nah, let’s be real. None of the actors could do a Russian accent and no Russian would do it

Dude, they don't have Russian accents because of the Tardis Translation Matrix. You reviewed The Fires of Pompeii, where if you speak Latin, it comes out as Welsh and the main bloke living in Pompeii has a Scottish accent.

"Modern Art!" - Peter Capaldi, 12th doctor and Pompeii stone merchant.
My favourite take on Russian speakers is in the film Death of Stalin, where the variety of natural English accents draws attention to how there's clearly going to be a variety of Russian accents with people from across the country represented. Just makes the performances more natural.

When the Tardis translates alien languages from across the universe, they usually have british accents. Why is it so strange for the Tardis to make Russian sound English in accent as well as dialect?
@reecedillon51402 жыл бұрын
The TARDIS automatically makes them able to understand eachother

Yep, that’s why all the aliens in the series can be understood and why the dr and his companions can be understood by aliens and non English speakers.

Treating, and casting, the Russian crew like they could just as easily be a British crew is actually a good thing despite being terribly inauthentic. We have been conditioned for so long to see Russia as a monolithic enemy by our past, our culture, and Russia's ongoing arseholery, that it would have been harder to epathise with the crew if they were cast realistically.
@nellrose46992 жыл бұрын
its not inauthentic....the tardis translates perfectly
@Dj.MODÆO2 жыл бұрын
The Tardis Translation matrix enables the dr and his companions to understand and speak any language (alien or whatever) and does the opposite when the Dr and his companions speak to non-English speakers. In “reality” the Russian crew were speaking Russian, Clara was speaking English (but the Russians heard her speaking in Russian, and during the entire run of Dr who, the Dr has been speaking Gallifreyan.

While you are correct about the accents, new-who has always tried to paint the doctor as a super genius who knows all languages without the translation circuit... Although they haven't tried very hard to keep continuity in this department since Smith's later seasons... Shame really as a Nerd i was always a big fan of the sci fi rules Eccleston and Tennent's Era brought to doctor who

Name checks for the Game of Thrones actors and some randoms but not the late great David Warner!? On the accents, didn’t the street seller in “Fires of Pompeii” have a TARDIS translated voice that was British too?

I love the Stallholder from the Fires of Pompeii. Less Palatine, more Peckham.

There's a Russian saying "Where would you go from a submarine?" meaning sometimes you can find yourself in an inescapable situation. Funny how they kinda integrated this saying in the line about the Ice Warrior.

Yeah aliens from other galaxy have no accent but the russians should sounds like russian when the acter are speaking in english for some reason. Makes sense. I never understood why english speaking people belive that if you have an accent you are speaking anouther language.

Tho I liked the new armour design - I struggle to understand why they designed the creature within like that😅 - Ice Warrior generals as seen in the Peladon episodes had humanoid shaped faces and for as funny as it is, they have lego shaped claws - So despite the exterior armour being faithful improvemnt on the original, the interior monster makes jack-all sense😅😂

I enjoyed this one. I guess among some of the other stinkers in S7 this one is more of the least offensive. The submarine setting was cool (I'm a sucker for maritime stuff), Clara wasn't the bestest impossible female space Jesus eva, and I'm willing to look past the iffy special effects. Also TARDIS translation and stuff, I don't think everyone needs an accent all the time.
