@@CaelanDeJager the one supporting veganism in the matter of reducing the carbon footprint? because that one alone is severely flawed, nothing is taking into account the number of animals that would continue living a 18-22 year lifespan, breeding continuously and producing methane which is 80 times more potent of a greenhouse gas than Co2. along with their need for vegetation as well as 8 billion people needing vegetation daily to keep with the negative nutrient (antinutrient) affect of eating only plants. and all the land needed to grow these crops, and since we cant kill anything, it invites plague-like infestations of crop destroying and disease carrying insects that could lead to famine and starvation.. you live in a lala land where you think theres this utopian future because you have the mental capacity of a child.

Tyrell, for what it's worth, I've compiled a list of the typical lines you'll hear, and probably have heard, from people. Feel free to share or ignore any of these points: Vegans and vegetarians are often challenged with a similar series of scoffs, criticisms and misnomers. Here’s a summary of the typical lines with rational rebuttals: A: If you don’t eat meat, you’ll become weak and deficient. B: That’s totally untrue. In fact, an increasing number of world-class athletes, whose strength & conditioning is monitored by personal trainers, swear by veganism. If not eating meat made them weak, slow or deficient in any way, they would immediately go back to eating meat. A: People have been eating meat for thousands of years. B: Mankind has outgrown lots of cultural traditions that we no longer deem humane or civilized: sacrificing animals, whipping women and children, burning witches, enslaving other people, etc. Harvesting and slaughtering animals just for culinary pleasure is needlessly cruel. A: Animals in nature eat other animals. B: Since when do we look to other animals for how to behave? Animals in nature also eat their own babies, rape their own daughters, raid each other’s homes, etc. Humans clearly don’t model our behaviour after other animals. We are capable of more civilized codes of ethics. A: Animals give their lives to nourish us. B: They don’t “give” their lives. They die kicking and screaming, and it’s unnecessary “nourishment”. Many top nutritional scientists have confirmed we don’t need to eat meat, not one bite, to fully nourish ourselves. If inflicting agony, fear and screaming death on conscious victims just for pleasure isn’t the definition of cruelty, what is? A: Animals are part of the food chain. There’s nothing cruel about eating them. B: If you saw your neighbour beating his dog to death with a shovel, and he said he was planning to eat parts of that dog, would you just shrug and say, “Oh, that’s OK then. It’s the food chain”? There’s nothing about killing and eating a dog that’s any crueler than a cow or pig. A: You’re never going to convince everyone to give up meat. There will always be meat eaters. B: There will always be people who abuse their dogs too, or keep their dogs in horrible, abusive conditions too. Just because needless acts of cruelty will always exist doesn’t give us licence to commit them or knowingly pay others to commit them on our behalf. A: Vegetarians are so sensitive about animals. Grow up. People like meat! B: When it came out that NFL star Michael Vick was involved in a dog-fighting circuit, fans were so upset that no NFL team would dare sign him for a while. Why are football fans so sensitive about animals? Livestock suffer at least as much abuse as dogs in dog-fighting circuits. A: Tribes in the Arctic or on remote islands rely on meat or fish to survive. B: Yes, that’s true. In some extremely rare cases, people have very little access to a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains so they must eat meat. And the survivors of that plane crash in the Andes were forced to eat human flesh. What does that have to do with us? A: Vegetarianism is a fad diet. It might cause health problems down the road. B: People have thrived on purely vegetarian diets for thousands of years. Millions of healthy, lifelong vegetarians today are descendants of generations of lifelong vegetarians. In fact, some of the longest living societies on Earth have been nearly or strictly vegetarian for many generations. A: Lots of people’s livelihoods depend on the meat industry. What about them? B: Millions of people’s livelihoods also depend on child trafficking, pornography, crystal meth and many other abusive industries. Post-traumatic stress disorder and many fecal-borne diseases are rampant among slaughterhouse workers. It’s an extremely disturbing and disease-riddled industry. A: So what would happen to all the livestock if we stopped eating them? They would still die. B: Moving to a plant-based society is never going to happen overnight. Of course the livestock that currently exist would still be eaten, but we should gradually stop producing billions of them per year. It’s unsustainable and it spreads diseases like no other industry. A: So you want those animals to be totally stricken from existence? That’s even more inhumane. B: By that logic, birth control is inhumane. Just like you wouldn’t want tens of billions of people in the world, we also shouldn’t keep producing tens of billions of livestock. It’s an extremely wasteful and unnecessary use of natural resources and a nightmare for the ecosystem. It’s literally unsustainable. A: We need livestock agriculture to fertilize pastures. Grass-fed cattle enrich the soil. B: Yeah, but it’s outrageously wasteful. If all the cattle produced for beef and dairy today were grass-fed, about ONE THIRD of the entire world’s arable land would need to be devoted to cow pastures! A: Humans are omnivores. We evolved from the apes by eating meat. B: We evolved by learning to harness fire to cook animal flesh because our digestive systems can’t handle eating raw meat like true carnivores and omnivores. But now we have healthier, less destructive, more humane options to get all the nutrients we need (unless you’re an Arctic tribesman who relies on walrus blubber). A: The great apes spend most of their day eating. That goes to show how hard it is to get proper nutrition from just eating plants. B: Apes in the wild also don’t have access to supermarkets, produce stands or restaurants. Nobody is suggesting people hang out in trees, eating leaves and breaking open nuts with stones. A: Hunters respect nature and animals. They hunt to feed themselves. What’s wrong with that? B: Let’s be honest. In the modern world, hunting is killing animals just for the fun of it. We don’t need to eat animals at all to feed ourselves, so whether hunters eat parts of the animals they shoot or not, they’re still just killing animals for the fun of it (unless they’re Arctic tribesmen). A: What about fishing? There are plenty of fish in the sea, right? B: Overfishing of the seas has greatly diminished the oceans’ healthy population. Today there are half the number of fish in the oceans compared to just fifty years ago. We literally can’t continue this rate of eating seafood, and we don’t need to (unless you’re living on a stranded island). A: People crave meat! You can’t deny that. B: Smokers crave cigarettes, alcoholics crave liquor, sugar lovers crave sweets. Cravings don’t indicate need or healthiness, only habit. Habits can change, especially when the habit is so destructive, unhealthy and inhumane. A: So what do you eat every day, just like tofu and sprouts? That’s gross! B: I’m pretty sure you know of hundreds of vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, oils, spices, etc. Also, eating plants is gross? But not eating the chopped up corpses of parasitic animals who lived in crowded sheds amid each other’s scabs, feces and infections, and died in screaming agony? A: The vast majority of people in the world eat meat! If it was unhealthy, everyone would be unhealthy. B: The leading causes of death in the Western world are cancer and heart disease. And worldwide major medical research centers have examined vast international meta-studies and confirmed that rates of meat consumption directly correlate with rates of cancer and heart disease. A: Don’t you just want to eat meat sometimes? B: No, not at all. If you bit into a burger or a rack of ribs and then found out it was dog meat or cat ribs, or if you found out the nuggets you were eating were made from monkey or rat, wouldn’t you be disgusted? Eating the chopped up corpse of one animal is no crueler or grosser than any other animal. A: If these arguments are valid, why are they just now being embraced? B: Many of the most celebrated revolutionary geniuses in human history were vegetarians: Pythagoras, Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Ben Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, Nicola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, etc. In fact, Einstein predicted that mankind will eventually evolve to a vegetarian diet for its own good. A: So you think everyone should just stop eating meat and dairy? B: Of course! That’s like asking if everyone should stop abusing their pets, leaving their showers running all day or encouraging children to smoke. Nothing about harvesting the corpses of billions of animals or ripping the milk from pregnant cows with machines is humane, healthy or sustainable.

My initial inclination to go vegan was walking through a street market in Myanmar and seeing first-hand a cage of sad, frightened goats waiting to get killed, and all the blood and flies and smells and general carnage of it all, and then compared that row in the market to the ones with all the baskets of bright, colourful fruits, vegetables, spices, etc. That image changed my outlook on how nasty meat really is. I think the most fundamental question that can be asked is simply: "If needlessly abusing and killing conscious animals just for pleasure isn't the definition of animal cruelty, what is?"
@zain40195 жыл бұрын
Erik Blees Wow:( what a powerful image. I wanna go hug an animal right now. Blessings to you for your compassion you show to the world:)
@outsideworld765 жыл бұрын
You can't know what made the goats sad or frightened, do you know of do you believe it was the knowledge of their nearing death? Most animals suffer severe stress when they are simply not in their normal habitat. Being brought to the market with all the strange sounds, smells and people is enough to stress these animals. I don't think most animals have a concept of what is death, they don't contemplate about the meaning of life.
@larsonpark38195 жыл бұрын
@@outsideworld76 Well, sure, I am not suggesting that animals have a nuanced philosophical understanding of the "meaning of life." But it's clear that animals smell death and fear it, which is why they scream and writhe in protest at the moment of slaughter. It's gross, cruel and needless, period.

@@outsideworld76 Great. But even in that best case scenario, I still wouldn't want to look a conscious, innocent animal in the eye and kill it just for a moment of unnecessary culinary pleasure, nor would I want to watch it done, and I wouldn't want my kids watch it. And so I also don't want to pay someone else to do it on my behalf. That's basic ethics as I see it. Eat chopped up animal corpses if you want to. I'm done with that.

Milly Tigerlily ok so if i was talking to ed, had an open discussion as the people in this video did and at the end decided i wanted to continue eating animal products would the same thing apply to me too? That perfectly describes veganism
@onyxlightworker5 жыл бұрын
@@SpeakDahTruth No, different situation :) I think everybody has a right to have their own perspective and thought about what they consume. The points that Ed make through these discussions are to educate people, even seemingly on those who are very educated, on what really happens or goes on in these animal related industries - which is not openly advertised or shown by such companies. I personally don't know you - I do not judge you, I do not think anything bad of you. But I would hope that if you were to be in that situation that you would be open to listening to what was said, and internalise it, make connections and understand what goes on then go on to make an informed opinion and new perspective. Thats a shame you think of Vegans like that, and its a shame you've come to Ed's video with that pre-distinction. Because I'd hope that Vegans do not think they are 'better than everyone else', we are maybe not 'more enlightened' but have more of an informed view of what really goes on behind slaughterhouse doors and farm houses and refuse to be apart of the consumer cycle within that. Enlightenment is a term which would be seen as 'given light', hence being 'enLIGHTened', having attainted more knowledge and understanding than before. I would offer you to watch the documentaries that Ed shows in the video above, so that you may understand why you may think that Vegans seem to feel 'more enlightened'. Vegans do not consume animal products because they understand the violence and the use/abuse of sentient beings... and would really appreciate and love for others to understand. I would say that Vegans are a community of people that want the world to expend in their consciousness, rather than shy away from information which is PURPOSELY not shown to the general public, due to the violent nature and potential decline in interest within the animal related industries. To be able to be happy and live how they want to, regardless of sex/age/orientation/country, but stop the unnecessary use of animals :) Hope thats helpful Negan, have a good day!

Some schools teach the students that insects are insects, they don't go beyond that, they don't even teach that insects are animals, all is left for the assumption that they are animals. When student goes to higher grade they'll read that insects are in Kingdom Animalia but subconsciously brush off that part because they think biological classification is different from conventional classification.

Love that you're on Harvard's campus Ed! I graduated from there in 2015 and Veganism came across my radar a few months before I finished school there (You can see my freshman dorm in the background...). Went down the Netflix food documentary wormhole and then asked my cousin about his Veganism since he'd been practicing it for 3 years - he linked me to Gary Yoroufsky's famous speech and there wasn't much looking back from there for me ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6SZhmNmgbKgeZY ). I eased into the diet, going vegetarian for a few months because I didn't want to make the full step to Veganism while still having to deal with the average cafeteria food. I figured that I would be able to execute the diet more effectively if I could fully control my food choices after I graduated (Veganism in the dining halls would have meant eating a lot of the same lame salads). This is a very Harvard-y thing to say haha, but at least for me the process of changing my diet was deeply rooted in an almost 'academic' curiosity for the multifaceted sub-topics around Veganism. There were so many angles in which to engage with the subject - through morality, how the human body processes food, the relationship between disease and nutrition, the link between our food literacy and food marketing, the environmental impact of the food industry, on and on. Absorbing all of that knowledge made the "hard" part of just finding new recipes to cook and more consciously choosing products that don't use animal parts to be actually fairly straightforward. Some books I'd recommend that the knowledge-hungry dive into are The China Study T. Colin Campbell, Proteinaholic by Dr. Garth Davis, and Dying for A Hamburger by Marjorie Lamb and Murray Waldman. As far as KZbin goes I've been most impressed by Ed's approach to broaching the topic with people on a moral level, and I get my nutritional facts fix from Mic The Vegan's channel. Gary Yoroufsky's personal website is still a go-to source of helpful information for me too: www.adaptt.org/ I would also say that while (some) college students might seem close minded to confrontational ideas lately, I think Ed's approach of calmly positing challenging questions without being accusatory is ultimately very effective, even if they seem to be pushing back in the interviews. It's when they're quietly considering the conversation later on their own terms and perhaps looking through some of the resources he gives them that they might become more receptive to the principles behind Veganism, especially when they ultimately align with the ideas around justice for humanity that they are all likely fully on board with already. Keep it up Ed!

I'm playing devil's advocate here because I myself am vegan but you do have to draw line somwhere. Do you kill insects? Most vegans say no and think of ladybirds, butterflies etc. But what about mosquitos, lice, fleas, ticks etc. Are you going to let them live? Knowing that tick can spread many diseases? I've seen a deer in a forest, most of it's ass has been eaten. It was still alive. For a reason. The bear that has been eating it wanted to keep it as fresh as possible every time he came back to have a bite. The deer was probably alive for 48 hours while being eaten. How does that compare to us shooting an animal with powerful gun and making sure it's dead as quickly as possible. As I said I'm playing Devil's advocate (asking questions I've been asking myself) but purely talking about hunting not intensive farming( there's absolutely no excuse for that).

zain don’t worry I’m not stupid enough to go vegan and sacrifice my health. Also vegans still kill a lot of animals
@sailorsenshi47255 жыл бұрын
Some people were obviously not being honest with them selves. When asked if killing animals was moral, they couldn’t give a straight answer. If you can’t morally agree with it maybe you should think about why that is, honestly with yourself and you’ll realize it isn’. Your choices have to change to align with your morals.

I love your approach Ed. You inspire me to get out there. I can't wait to become active in vegan education!! Much love! -Shane

Loved this. Fantastic to see people who aren't as defensive about their views. You can tell they actually consider the weight of what they're being asked before running themselves into a corner of "hmmm personal choice, taste, overpopulation." Good job, Ed.

I draw the line at killing things that can obviously feel some sort of discomfort.... I don’t need a science book to tell me a fish or crab doesn’t feel great when it’s being boiled.

It's really amazing to me that I reasoned this out more clearly at age 3 than these obviously bright college kids are doing in this video. They are patently struggling against years of programming, and perhaps after this conversation they are conscious of this.

@@tamcon72 Some animals move for hours after being killed. Does this mean they are still alive and conscious of feeling? I would say no. Your view seems basic and also probably misunderstands how some animals operate.
@tamcon725 жыл бұрын
@@danielhobgen6146 Animals don't "operate." They are not machines. It is a constant mistake that meat eaters make that, as you are doing, they assume that vegans knows less about animal biology than they do. Many vegans come from farming backgrounds or the slaughtering industry.

I’m trying to go Vegan for 7days starting this Saturday coming. All because of your videos Ed. I’m a huge meat eater who before following you, I gave little if any thought to the reasons. Wish me luck everyone. You gotta start somewhere right?

hey man i see you commenting on all of eds vids so i just wanted to ask you, how long do you think it will be until half of the world is vegan?
@veganfortheanimals69945 жыл бұрын
@@pegyhill9333 Tough question to answer. However, for starters, a major shift towards veganism is happening in the UK and in Israel already. Also, the current percentage of people (say here in the US) who are over 70 and who are vegan is extremely small (but they will not be here for that much longer). However, the number of people who are age 25 and under who are vegan is many many times greater. So as the older generation passes on and the younger generations become more vegan, (and also, vegans will raise vegan children) that's when bigger changes will happen, especially with social media bringing awareness to agriculture and slaughterhouses, etc. Then, factor in the climate change issue becoming more pressing and that will spur changes too. (Time is ticking on that). I think there will be a significant paradigm shift within the next 10-15 years. We just need to tip the scales. www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/oct/10/huge-reduction-in-meat-eating-essential-to-avoid-climate-breakdown

Vegan For The Animals Ⓥ lots of great points thank you! Also the whole reason I went vegan was for the animals and honestly ever since going vegan I now have so many bad dreams about animals being tortured in slaughterhouses. I don’t need to feel guilty anymore so I dont know why I’m just now having these dreams
@veganfortheanimals69945 жыл бұрын
@@pegyhill9333 Nice to hear your rationale for changing. Yes, I know what you mean about the nightmares. I haven't watched Dominion or Earthlings, and I went vegan without that. I've seen enough little clips though, that it's had a major impact on me. (My heart breaks, every day in life, just seeing dead animals on the side of the road that were hit by cars). Don't watch those 2 docs. If I did, I might end up in the psych ward. Peace.

Vegan For The Animals Ⓥ you and I seem to be on the same page here. Anytime I see a clip of a cow getting its throat slit it ruins my whole day. Idk how 98% of Americans can justify supporting that it makes me sick to my stomach. Anyway at least there are some good people out there like us
