The political philosopher Harvey Mansfield first arrived at Harvard University in the fall of 1949. He has remained at that august institution of higher education and is still teaching at age 90. In this special edition of Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson, recorded in the Baker Library at Dartmouth College, Dr. Mansfield answers five questions about America today from his perspective of observing and writing about the country for more than half a century.

For a man who’s 90, he looks like he’s in his late 70’s! Wow!!! Good for him

Beautiful interview. What a scholar Harvey is , I’m 21 years old and his opinions on feminism and the declination of the family resonate very deeply.

Wonderful interview. "Greatest Commandment: You shall love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. On this hangs all the Law and Prophets." This premise embodies our US Constitution.

That was so good I’m going to watch it again to make sure I didn’t miss a thing. Harvey is an amazing person. Great job with the interview as always. Thanks for making such great material available to the masses for free.

Very rare to find a professor like him in a liberal university such as Harvard. Very conservative political view.

He must be incredibly old for an active professor. Somewhere around 90 years old. I never heard of him before, too bad for me.

Love how concise and wise he is. Wished he elaborated a bit more, though.

The first book of the Western canon I read for pure personal interest (not counting the Bible or school assignments) was Harvey's translation of Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy

America by the way is not the only country trying to find its own sense of government (nothing special about that). Moreover, once one gets a bit educated, one tends to become more progressive, it takes a special kind of interest (e.g. to conserve the way things have been) to become or remain a conservative, once educated. Especially when you are in a like minded circle of educated educated/progressive students and professors. So the results among students and faculty you report are not that surprising. How would you feel about a University that taught creationism as a core course in biology, paleontology, etc. Some of the solutions you suggest for the future of education seem to be pointing that way.
