I find it funny that a lot of SEC fans think FSU and Clemson can't compete with the SEC if they move to that conference. Both have a track record of beating SEC teams and have national title wins over SEC teams in the past decade while basically having half the resources SEC schools have. I think they can definitely compete if they're on a level playing field financially
@gsandy52358 ай бұрын
The SEC doesn't want Florida State because Florida doesn't want intrastate SEC competition. The Big Ten won't want them as FSU is not in the Association of American Universities. The only viable option for them is the Big 12 and they're better off in the ACC.
@wesleygary66518 ай бұрын
Yeah. sure. Easy to compete as you put it if you recruit 5-star talent and play a 1 or 2 game schedule per year. To be clear--that means you face 2 teams that pose a challenge and the other 10 games are gimmies. It's what Miami did in the 80's. FSU did in the nineties (along with Nebraska) and Ohio State does every year.

@@gsandy5235 AAU membership is not the barrier that it is being made out to be. First off, because FSU is already on path for it and will be in within the next 5 years. Secondly, if you believe that the B10 would turn down the eyeballs that FSU media market brings because of lack of AAU, then you are mistaken. They didn't boot Nebraska when they lost their AAU card, they won't prevent FSU because they don't have one. Additionally, if you don't think the two big media companies (ESPN and FOX) aren't driving this ship, you are crazy. FOX would love to get a foothold in the south. After Dec 3rd, anyone who doesn't know that college football is all about the money is not paying attention. Florida State is a blue-blood (because of Bobby Bowden) and one of the most watched teams, no matter who they play. Being watched = massive advertising money. FSU will ONLY go to the Big 10 or SEC because that is where the money is to compete for championships. Fox and the Big 10 are drooling over FSU because they will make them a lot of money and will get then into the the richest area of the country for college football and recruits. The SEC is a better fit for FSU, but both hate each other, however, the SEC may try to get FSU just to keep them from going to the Big 10 and Fox, which would, yes, make them a lot of money. That's the state of college football now.

It is possible that ESPN will lose their stranglehold on college football. It may be one of the reasons they will push for the SEC to take FSU. Sure, they have UF, but there is no revenue coming from UF in a bowl. If FSU goes to the BIG, that conference will have far more national/name brands. The ACC will be divided, with most teams going to the Big XII. The SEC will snag a couple, the BIG will take a couple + Notre Dame, but FOX will own the majority of college football between the two “Big” conferences.

Half a Billion Dollars!!! Plus legal fees... Any estimated potential "lost" revenue by remaining is just a 'too bad situation'. I realise joining another conference with higher media rights could help pay for the cost but it would still takes years. Universities have lost their way. Regardless of how the money is acquired, it would be much better spent on students in many ways, one of which is lower tuition. In the end, it's the students who pay for this, either directly or indirectly. As was alluded, what FSU needs is every University, or some percentage, in the ACC join them and dissolve the conference as a group. Perhaps then there would be no monies owed to the Conference and the Conference would have no obligation to honour its media deals. In my mind, that is very unlikely to happen. Only winners will be the attorneys.

Based on FSU's football performance against Georgia and their basketball performance at home against Lipscomb, maybe they could negotiate their way into the Colonial Athletic Conference if they are so determined to make the mistake of leaving the ACC. Why is UNC so coveted when they are 5-12 in their most recent 17 football games against the Wolfpack? I don't get the "brand" argument. NCSU is a larger school, their engineering/STEM alumni make a LOT more money than UNC grads, NCSU hoops went to the NCAA tourney last year while UNC stayed home, UNC has academic scandals and campus violence.
