When genesis was written the content of the narrative came from sumeria. The whole world according to the sumerians only consisted of the immediate valley and areas bear the 2 rivers. So as far as the sumerians were concerned, the whole world flooded. The world map of the sumerians can be seen in the British museum. The world was tiny back then

Or...you could believe in the inerrancy of scripture and the overabundant wealth of science (DNA, geological, archeological, etc.) which supports it. I will never try to fit the Bible into man's understanding, but instead will bend my own understanding toward God's perfect word.

This is true, but when you understand that scientific study is only a tool to understand God's creation, you realize you don't have to be ignorant of it. It deepens my faith when I learn how complex the material and observable are, and I am struck with reverent awe at God's genius. Also, innerancy of scripture has some specifics. To put it simply, in matters of science and history in scripture, the Holy Spirit only means to teach inerrantly in those matters which are profitable for salvation.

@@carnivalwholesale9809 Not really. As Catholics, we do not take many sections of the bible literally. Like say... nearly all of Genesis for instance. The idea that the bible is completely inerrant as read literally is something certain (but not all) Protestant denominations believe, not us. We see nothing wrong with believing certain sections are meant to be allegorical or metaphorical. Tobit is another example of this. Why do you believe the bible should be read literally or not at all?
@carnivalwholesale98093 ай бұрын
@@soulfire2588 Then If you do not take parts of the bible literally, you need to show a reliable method by which we should take parts of the bible literally and the other parts NOT literally. FURTHERMORE, not only is the GLOBAL FLOOD disproven by modern science but the myth of Adam and Eve as well. Which that disproves the concept of Original Sin and ULTIMATELY disproves the need for Jesus to die on the cross.
@soulfire25883 ай бұрын
@@carnivalwholesale9809 The fact that Adam and Eve MAY not have been actual people and rather that the tale was meant to be metaphorical doesn't disprove that humanity lost our way and required a savior. I'm Catholic and yet I believe in the Big Bang, evolution, and think the flood was likely localized. I see nothing contradictory in any of this. Also, we Catholics DO have a reliable method- the magisterium and sacred tradition. But since you don't recognize them as authoritative and have determined that because some parts of the bible may be metaphorical means that none of it can be relied upon, there isn't really anything I can say to convince you otherwise.

Even as I believer I found this video to be patronising and incorrect. The Bible is the Word of God. The meaning of the story is somewhat more interesting than the language a weatherman uses.

I dig Tim but he is doing what many protestants do to fit their narrative. Ill ply with words now but not later et al. Maybe all those "religions" got the story, somewhat, from the writers or speaker's of the bible. Lastly, so God told Noah to build an ark and take in all animals but not really. God wanted people 5 and 6 thousand years later to come along and say none of this happened and i was fooling Noah and all the people back then. The thing is, animals and science proves there was a global flood. The church writers were concerned more with Jesus and His teachings and if the old testament prophesied the comeing of the Lord and how the laws were similar or different.
@rogueraven13333 ай бұрын
What Tim is saying is exactly why I left the faith in my youth. If what he is saying is true then the bible is not infallible and is flawed and therefore not the reliable word of God. Tim is doing more harm than good with his stance. Science even proves the global flood. He is correct that the church allows his flawed view but he should not teach it since it inspires lots of people to leave and hardly anyone to join.

The people who wrote the Bible believed in what they wrote. We know they were wrong but for instance when the Torah was written the Hebrews believed their ancestors lived much longer lives than they themselves did. They didn't think it was just an expression that Joshua stopped the sun, like a weatherman. They believed it because they didn't have any astronomical awareness. You are passing off something as inconsequential that they took very seriously.
