Ok so as an Indian we had quite a lot of discussion about it . Firstly the argument could be made that during colonialism in India, UK was under queen Victoria's and king George's reign so we cannot actually blame her oh she was just merely doing her duties but when we look from a broader perspective after she was made queen , under her reign horrors were unleashed on Kenyan people during the rebellion in Kenya that happened around 1952 . She didn't just carry her family wealth and barbaric legacy but the imperialist and colonialist mindset too , otherwise what reason Britain had attacking an independent nation Egypt in 1956 Suez crisis. Even the British occupation of North Ireland , Wasn't bloody Sunday massacre also under her reign ? From an Indian perspective her foreign policies have been anti-India. Britain had send a battlegroup in Bangladesh liberation war. She proudly wears all the jewels stolen from colonies of Britain and enjoys the wealth with no shame. She never tried to make a change in the policies of Britain same mindset carrying on forever not even an apology to nations for the horrors bestowed upon them by British rule . SO even if you make a point that she was a child which had no business with it , what about things happened in her reign? Now I don't know what she did or did not do for UK or even personal life things but the thing is that her family can mourn her but we have no reason mourning her .

i understand disliking harry styles on the basis of his politics or attitude towards the monarchy, but i've seen a lot of people accusing him of "queerbaiting" i don't know the guy, never listened to his band... but i've seen the things he wears and it is really sad to see so many people even those who are supposedly openminded acting like gender nonconformity is only for queer people. expressing yourself and demolishing gender norms is for everyone, including cishet guys. im dissapointed to see all the people online not understanding this

I might be wrong, but from what I’ve seen most of the criticism in that area comes from him being praised for defying gender norms, while those who have paved the way for him to be able to do so go largely unacknowledged. Basically “queer people have been harassed and murdered for doing this, but the second a cishet guy does it he’s getting praised?” Which I entirely understand the frustration with. In that case, though, I don’t think the criticism is levied at Harry as much as it is the way his presentation is sensationalized in media. Though I will mention on that point that he isn’t necessarily cishet, he has chosen not to label himself publicly which is a choice that should be respected. Though in the case of people saying what you described (and I’m sure there’s at least a few, it is the internet after all) I completely agree. It’s hypocritical and ridiculous to demean someone for being gender nonconforming without being openly queer. That sets us all back.
@ettaz2 жыл бұрын
Also, as far as I know, he has never confirmed nor denied that he is queer, so is it queer baiting if he is actually part of our community? That is a private thing he might not ever want to share publicly and that is ok. On the other hand, I didn't know he is being criticized for political opinions. What exactly is being criticized there? My feel was that he is pretty ok on that front, but I'm not well informed

@@sporkspork8446 Yes and no. When TV shows queerbait, they're trying to bring in queer and homophobic viewers without alienating either. It's a marketing strategy by execs who don't have any personal stake in it, plus it's emotionally removed and intentionally manipulative. When it comes to an individual celebrity, we have to remember that coming out and labeling ourselves is an incredibly personal decision. Maybe he IS trying to lead people on for the clout, maybe it's all a ploy from his marketing team, but being a celebrity doesn't mean you stop being a human person and I think it's a little unfair to compare them that way. There's direct emotional stakes there that don't really exist for a fictional TV character who has no agency or TV executive calling the shots from a distance.

As far as the "looking for his glasses" thing, I believe what Chris Pine was trying to say was that he set the glasses down to clap, but then had a brain fart as he realized he was clapping but "WAIT How can I be clapping? I was just holding my glasses!" And then he looks down and realized he just set them down and smiled because he felt silly. Jordan saying "you can't lose your personhood by doing nothing" is such a great way of articulating a really insidious facet of privlege, I know he was literally talking about the queen of england and the monarchy as a whole but its just a really great way to frame the issue of institutional power and dehumanization. I had always thought of her as an innocuous ribbon cutter that would be wheeled out for show, not holding any tangible authority at all. But as many have said recently, her real job was to be the face of the nation, a unifier. And that is a position of genuine power. The ability to sway public opinion is one of the most tangible forms of power a single person can have. She could have stood up for and changed the lives of so many people. The thought of sitting on that much power for that long, and not even trying to change the world in a meaningful capacity is so evilly complicit

When I went to England, every citizen I spoke to was OBSESSED with the monarchy, and would jump so quickly to defend her. The crazy thing was, we stayed with our family friends and the houses there almost all look the same, they’re basically stacked on top of on another, super narrow, almost all town homes. Just basically no space for living. But we toured the castle. ACRES AND ACRES of just land around the castle, like Jordan said, unused for agriculture or actual worthwhile things.

I'm one of those people who were afraid to ask (due to the internet being the internet) exactly what the queen and royal family actually do because of how insane people sometimes got over the royal family. I researched it and besides charity and some parliament stuff I'm still not sure what the purpose of the monarchy is besides being just celebrities.
@Jordan-nw4sj2 жыл бұрын
The queen must consent to legislation, and a few years back petitioned parliament to excuse the royal family from the new tax laws that were meant to add transparency to public servants. They quickly excluded the entire royal family from being obligated to share their tax information publicly, while all other public and elected officials must comply. The palace likes to claim it’s totally procedural and that the queen never intervened, but we know during her reign she vetted at least 1,062 laws, and withheld her consent from several until parliament complied with her request.
@noitsbecky17952 жыл бұрын
The real answer is that their purpose is to enforce imperialism. They colonize, steal from the poor, enact wars, steal entire nations’ worth of gold and silver gems and stick it on their garish crowns and castles, and continue to have the audacity to ask for respect. The Queen was the biggest private landowner in the world when she died, lands that her family stole. She had the power to PRIVATELY petition the government to enact changes that would benefit her family financially. She literally tried to steal tax funds that rightfully should have gone to the poor and use it to heat her fucking castle. The reason why it’s so hard for you to find a valid purpose for them is because frankly there is none. They are simply parasites that we’ve been socially conditioned to accept. They add nothing of value to society. Nothing. Their charity is LAUGHABLE because literally if they just paid taxes, they would contribute far more to society. But of course, they had a special rule made that basically makes them tax exempt. Like I said, they’re parasites.

Before they started getting good, I was just like "Okay. I like the Eagles and the Browns. I'll wear the shirts and hats but I'm not a like huge sports person." But then I took a Fantasy Sports class the year after the Eagles won the Super Bowl and I have been so aggressively invested in it. It's so much fun but so stressful. But, it's given me another interest that I share with my dad and uncle. My sister is like how I was before the Eagles won. She won't watch games, but she is happy when the Eagles and the Browns are doing well because that's just the way we were raised.

Crazy that Jarvis mentioned Chattanooga because I am moving from San Diego CA to a small town near Chattanooga for grad school and I’m scared

I habe a funny story about the American drivers test: I am German American, and my parents moved to the US in the 90s. They also had to take the theoretical test again there, and both spoke perfect English. However, my father quickly realized that as an immigrant he could demand a test in his mother tongue. And, that there was only one version of the test available in German. So he asked for a German test; took the test, failed because he had done absolutely no studying, remembered the questions, looked for the specific answers in my mother’s study book, went back, took the exact same test again, and got 100% without ever understanding any measurements in it (which is why he failed the first time).

I know harry styles was kinda talking in circles sbout the movie. However i kinda took what he was saying as: it's the kinda honest to god kinda movie to watch in a theatre. As opposed to at home on a small screen. Like he thought it was a good theatre going experience.
