I was a store manager and was asked to move to another store across the country. Was told if I "straighten out the problems" (there were many) at the new store within 6 months, I would be promoted to Assistant District Manager. Well, 6 months passed, I was praised for cleaning up the mess and was asked to train a new management recruit. I was happy to do so, and during a conversation with the new recruit, I found out she was hired as the new Assistant DM. AND THEY DUPED ME INTO TRAINING HER!!! I immediately started looking for a new job. Found a better management job in the tech industry, was there 28 years, retired, and am living my best life. Lived and learned.

One day the District Manager was in the store and came over started asking me to do some of her duties because she wasn't. I just looked at him and said "When you start paying me $68 dollars an hour I'll start doing the Managers work for her." He wrote several emails to HR and his manager that until he receives an official new work contract he's not assuming the new people manager responsibilities. This exactly happened to me. Was told by my previous boss I would get an increase in pay to reflect the work I was doing. In addition added responsibilities would be added to my role. He kept pressing me to take on added responsibilities. I refused until it was set in writing. He looked at me funny and asked why I would decline added responsibilities. I don’t work for free, I need compensation. He didn’t bring up the matter until I asked for an update. Needless to say HR did not approve of a new title or compensation. He continued to press on every so often. I decided to evade him by sticking to my assigned obligated task duties and not venture outside more than what was needed. My advice, do not take on added responsibilities or training roles that fall outside your job responsibilities because you are not getting paid for it.

Kind of..... I was kind of used and it was them saying they were testing me at the time but then I never heard anything and it took a few months to get any kind of answers from them. Basically, I had agreed to cover closing shifts for a manager in case his wife went into labor or needed to suddenly go to the hospital as an emergency plan at work. I was still a crew member and still young and dumb..... Realizing that this was like 6-8 years ago and knowing my age, I feel like it was a life time ago and I hate myself for it. I never saw an "updated contract" basically. I was given the manager shirt, I was given a tiny bit of training, and expected to run all the closing shifts. This was a fast food place too, so my schedule wasn't set as in there wasn't one day we were always closed every week. we were 7 days a week. I look back on it now and I hate myself for doing it. Even if I tell people that I've had management experience, it doesn't help anything. I don't ever want to be a manager again. Never. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry right now, especially knowing what happened with that job and other "training" attempts when i was younger. I hate that job. I hate that place. I will flip it off every time I drive by it, even though most likely most of the staff there isn't the same as when I was there, if any at all. The GM that I worked for at the time is the GM at a location that I pass by more frequently now in the last 6 years and I hate that place just as much. Not just because of the experiences I went through with that location also but having seen what my mom had to deal with there. I can't stand the company as a whole. Sorry for the rant.....
