Engine knocking sounds

Help wanted!! After service this knocking sounds started. I was in couple service, and they didn't know what is it!!
I haven't found reason for knocking, mechanic told me that this isn't dangerous. And it wasn't, engine died due to other problems, as folowing: I was driving a bit longer ride (in foreign state), and after 700 km on highway I have noticed weird sound out of engine bay and loss of power. I went out of highway to a service, and they told me that oil rings or maybe piston is blown. It was starting normally, but damage was to big for driving it back. Pulling car back to my home town would cost about 1200 €, fixing the problem about 1500 € + one week waiting, or buying new engine, which is about 600 till 800 € + work. Since the car is 19 years old, and I know for 206000 km I decided not to fix it, so I towed it to a scrapyard.

If it gets louder when it's hot it most likely rod knock which means you need new main crank bearings. If it is loud when it's cold but gets quite as it warms up it's most likely piston slap. If that's the case you need a new Piston and the cylinder needs to be re-bored. Also make sure your oil pressure is good and it's getting cooled properly, otherwise it will start knocking again.

for anyone else reading this now, who may have the same issue, try changing the oil. In the description, they wrote it started after servic, which means they probably had an oil change. If it did it after the oil change, and the oil level looks good, they could have put the wrong oil weight in the car.

97336cf you'd be surprised the amount of people who argue an extra £5+ plus for either "premium" oils or the correct one being at a bigger price. Each engine and year is different granted but it's something worth knowing about for vehicle longevity

@maytinkerblast I changed oil, several times, and now i'm using Valvoline 10 w 40 for engines over 100000 km. First two times was same, and now (third replacment) is a bit better

Well for now it work very good! I'm driving it normally, in town, on highways, before couple days I was driving 170 km/h! Everything is as usual on a normal engine! It's passing ECO testing normally.

@BruceCountyFinest I'm checking oil regulary! It isn't conected with oil! I even was in service to check oil pump, but it work normally!

Knocking is caused by an "over-combustion". Better fuel should fix the issue temporarily but basically, while the engine is on its compression strokes they are igniting from more than one point. So, it's igniting from spark and also igniting from too high of a compression. This could be a plethora or things and not just one itself. Carbon build-up, timing, too much fuel coming through injectors, squashed head gasket, etc. My guess is that it's a mixture of everything, might be worth looking at a newer car if it bothers you a lot.

Still runs good :-D I just get back from highway, 500 km with max reached speed 160 km/h. I'm pouring only high octane fuel (e.g. shell V power gasoline).

actually, too much fuel is cures the knocking !!! It cools down the combustion chamber's air, so you can use moar compression. -One way of curing knock

No that's called ping, or pinging. When to low of octane gas is used. Also. Only pings when under load. Wont ping revving it in park. Knocking is usually caused by a failing rod bearing.

@hasnfefer By the sound of the knocking when you rev the engine, it definately sounds like a valve problem. But just to be sure, check to see if your pullies are installed properly and the belts have good tension.

@pipinhot9 O yes! It goes great. I was driving it 180 km/h, and puls fantastic. When I'm pushing it, engine is not knocking. It knocks only when it is not under load. Weird.

My Ford Escape was making that sound when I bought it, at first I didn’t suspect the engine was ticking until the valve set gave out on the highway which resulted in valvetrain damage and or crank failure.... strangely enough, the mechanic said it was a “spun bearing” I knew it wasn’t a bearing...

One exhaust valve burned during drive on highway. I was on the hill, the car was full, and I notice that it doesn't pull as it should. So I put it in lower gear and it was going great. I passed about 200 km whit burned valve since I didn't know that. There wasn't any different sounds, any vibrations, anything, until I stopped to pay toll. above 2000 rpm engine worked great, and smooth. And than I went to service...The rest you allready know.

Mine is doing the same starting from 2500-3200 RPM, exact same noise. I do feel a slight power reduction, but only slight. Did you find out what is wrong with it?? or is it normal ?? P.S. My engine is a newer A16LET engine.

On this engine valves are self adjusting. They work on oil pressure.

@pipinhot9 exhaust valves was changed 4 years ago, and head was checked. I don't know what is problem, and it still goes good, so I guess it will work some time.

It is interesting, I've noticed that knocking last about 5 seconds after I start engine. One mechanic said that this is normal because all oil is down, and this is time which pump need to deliver oil in the head. But, I think this is not OK, because I have this knocking all the time between 2 and 3 thousand rpm. Actually not all time, when engine is under full load knocking goes away, and when throttle is released it goes away to. It knocks only when I'm keeping speed.

Check your camshaft bearings. I had the x14xe engine a few years ago in my opel tigra a. I also thought it was "only" the blown head gasket becouse but after changing head gasket and the timing belt the sounds remained. Disassembling and this time measuring the bearings of the camshaft it turned out, that both camshafts were out of tolerance. (Perhaps because of coolant beeing a bad lubricant) Greetings from Germany HansWiso

@bunit69able It has allmost same intensity, as it was from beginning. I can't tell, but I've got feeling that noise coming from valves, or exhaust area. It is weird, it was three time in service, and they did not find anything.

Can you still drive it? does the noise get louder when you drive up a hill or pull a load? This is what my workshop manual says: Pinging or Kocking engine sounds during accelleration or uphill - 1. Incorrect grade of fuel; 2. Ignition timing incorrect; 3. Fuel injection system faulty; 4. *** Improper or damaged spark plugs or wires ; 5. Vacuum leak; 6. Kock sensor malfunctioning. If that was a cold start, stuff rattles. Cold tolerances and little to no oil in certain parts of the engine. It didn't sound horrible. You could try to pinpoint the location with a mechanic's stethoscope.

It was complete service. Water pump change, all belts, and all parts which are supposed to be changed, valves... All parts are original GM parts, and it was warranty for 1 year on all parts and job which they made. I was in service couple times, but they said everything is normal, and knocking will stop after some time. It didn't stop.

It’s the fuel. The (maybe too low grade fuel) create uneven pockets of detonation. It’s supposed to be a smooth detonation whereas that knocking sound is the uneven pockets of detonation. Octane rating. Watch this to stop engine knock: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJOYh5mfe95jobs

The sound you hear is pinging (car is getting to much fuel and not burning it) - my z18xe was also using a little coolant - turns out it wasn't the catalytic converter and I have a blown head gasket.

How old is your Zafira? Is it the same engine? My engine is X16XEL, and write now the engine died :-( Suddenly it lost power, and sound was weird. Engine was very hot.

I wouldn't say that. Those engines are pretty good. Small displacement (1.6 litre) and 101 hp heavy car, and it goes really good. I just get back from trip, and I was driving 100 mp/h all the time.

valve seals, some times they need certain oil for the different seals you have in. or maybe its a rod journal and if its raising with the rpms it can be the main shaft in the transmission my buddies ranger is having that problem with his transmission but i couldnt tell you unless i was there.

Opel's EcoTec engines are known for unreliable water pump. So if engine like that is making a weird noise, 90% it's the water pump :D

clean the MAF sensor. next stage is were it starts to pull back at steady speeds. MAF cleaner is available at most shops that sell engine parts.

@hasnfefer I have an Opel Tigra, also with this kind of engine. I had this noise which was caused by the yellow oil fill cap. When i put a finger on it, the noise was gone..maybe this helps you in some way..

Ok, well, it sounds like loosed valves. You can do something else. Check the oil pressure or change it, but use only thicker oils, like 15W40. It might help if there is a lack of lubrication on a camshaft. Thicker oil would increase the pressure.

water pump is belt driven. For couple kilometers pump, and whole set should be changed. But, I'm guessing it is connected with valves.

maximal speed is -30kph aprox.., on ride this sound is like timing chain in mid rpm (maybe Hi rpm but i have arrow exhaust) - The more gas the more louder. After changing timing chain the sound is quiter but still here. After i done repair i write if it helped. :)

I will try that to. It was better for some short period after oil change, but now is same old situation.

No. Nothing new. I will go in service in Monday, but it will be regular big service (water pump, belts...) My still works as it was in the beginning. I will ask mechanics to put other oil type. I'm using Valvoline Max life 10 w 40, but I'm thinking to switch on GM oil with selected spec for this engine. If that doesn't help, i don't know what will.

Sounds like a bad belt tensioner to me as the knocks don't exactly depend on the rpm...

Change your oil, and use OEM filter. Oil might not be getting to the head. I've seen this before.

Are you talking about the loud growl noise? Thats a chain driven water pump if its the same as a typical GM ecotec. Im not familular ith the opel divisions version compared to U.S. GM..The ones here have that problem very often.

This is because of the hydraulic tappet. You can buy "Hydrostößeladditiv" in any car parts shop. It will ease on the problem, not sure it will go away, but be less loud and harsh.

oh, well, I'm driving it each day, and I made a lot of miles, it is still same!! I put thicker oil, and I'm changing it regurally, engine doesn't spend to much oil. Everything is OK, except this knocking!! I will try this ghetto stetoscope!! Thank you!!

sounds like a valvetrain problem to me. take off the valve cover, and see if anything looks wrong. and dont rev it too much until you get it figured out

@hasnfefer Sorry, been busy at work. Well, if you think it was a problem or different after you got it serviced or something and still drive it. It could be nothing. As you said, you changed your valves 4 yrs ago so as wootness3000 said, it could still be a valve or head problem. Otherwise, it could be nothing if your still goes. Then again, just because an engine can still go, doesn't mean its not broken.

@hasnfefer Well, It definately wasn't serviced properly then. The valves in the head may be bent or out-of time and hitting the pistons. Check your distributer and timing belt. Worst case senario, you might need to buy a new head, and maybe service your car somewhere else. :)

It doesn't have chain, it is belt driven system.
