From one stranger to another, thank you. Your video is helping me narrow down why my Fabia won't start. All other electrics work, new battery too so now I'm going to hunt for and test some relays...Unless anyone has a handy tip they want to share 👍👍

Great footage at the end. Im on my 1st Fabia,a 2003 1.9 Vrs,had it for 2 years. Its a bit of shed but i love it to bits. 🤣👍🍻

Top Video ! This relay box is in the schematics at the top in grey ! I found that while diagnosing a broken wire which left me with no main beam! The wire was in one of the connectors ! I didn't have the balls to take apart the box itself - I would do it now no problem after this vid! Thanks Again !!

My comfort module has just failed, I'm betting. The door opening with the key doesn't work, the windows don't open. Sometimes they open, sometimes they don't. Your video helped me a lot, and the one with unscrewing the plastics. Thank you very much once again. This is the second module. The first one was replaced by someone. It was 2015. That one was eating up electricity. the battery was discharging. Greetings from Poland

Thanks Harvey, fantastic video, my heated rear window works even with the the ignition off? I think the problem could be in this box also got a 0.5 Amp battery current drain, anyone else out there heard this, thanks again.

Thank you very much for such a good video and description. I have problem with my skoda fabia 2005 SDI 1.9 when I turn on the windshield wiper fluid, my rear wiper turns on. Also, when the gearbox in reverse, the warning lights on the dashboard will not turn on

First I would suspect the wiper switch, spray electrical contact spray into the switch mechanism at the base while actuating it in all directions with the battery disconnected of course. See if that makes any difference. Consider renewing the switch. It could be a fault in the central electrical control unit as I think you are thinking by looking at this video. The relays are inside this unit soldered onto it. It maybe worth removing this, replaceing it or repairing any relay and on board issue such as dry solder joints. This is usually a specialists job if you don't know what you are doing. The reverse gear light could be a wiring connection issue somewhere including to the binnacle and will need investing. :-)

I checked the schematics for 2003 mk.I Fabia 1.9TDi 74kw and that relay in position 5 must be for diesel injectors. But schematics show it should be on position 1. But then i have schematics for Left Hand Drive cars, and also if i remeber correctly those red wires are not wired this way in LHD car, they are more tidy. PS: by Left Hand Drive i mean cars with stearing on left, not sure if i am using right terminology here.

I read somewhere that the grey relay (position 11) does something with the window regulators, en wipers when turning the ignition on. He said that those electrics doesn’t like the current drop/difference at the moment you turn ignition on. So that’s the reason the wipers wil temporary stop when you’re starting the car. When te relay isn’t good anymore, it can cause trouble to the window regulator. I have done everything to the electrics of the window regulators of my Fabia mk1 from 2007, and this is the last option for me. Because my windows only are working for about 10 minutes after I disconnect, and reconnect the connectors on the window motor itself. Hope this will finally fix the window problems for me.

@@HatBoyHarvey Hi, thanks for your reply! Yes I already checked and measured them, and they’re looking fine for what I can see. If this isn’t working Iam going to take the complete wire harness of and have a detailed inspection for shaving ect. But hope it isn’t necessary.

Great video as usual ...just waiting on this cold snap to clear I have a driveshaft cv boot whishbone bushing and exhaust sleeve to replace for Mot next week on s side note my heater core is clogged any idea how to clear it rather than a change out need it done as i have no heating in this weather I know the core is blocked as the two pipes going to the heater core only one is hot the return is cold.

Thanks. Drain the system, change out the thermostat. Then reverse flush the core with a hose (use low pressure) from the cold side connected to the pipe detached further up the line into a container, fill with rad/matrix cleaner and leave for a while, then refill and repeat a few times. Reattach hoses and refill with new coolant and away you go. You can superglue the cv rubber if only small tear if relatively new and no water has got in. console bushes will need a tool to extract and install, but you maybe able to make one. Will video these at some point. Hope this helps, good luck on MOT :-)

No, I didn't replace the mechanism I will describe what is happening The windows do not open and at the same time, on the driver's side, it does not open all the doors. From the passenger side, it opens everything well. It works like that for a while and then nothing works. In Google, they write such a combination of such failures, it directs me to a broken modem. Tomorrow I am supposed to recover another comfort modem. I will start by replacing the module. thank you for your support@@HatBoyHarvey

Apparently using intermittent wipers increases wear on the relay as this activates and deactivates the relay more. I found my wipers stopped working randomly (usually in the rain) and replacing the voltage control unit fixed the issue.

That is great to hear, probably the easier thing to do. You are right about the intermitant thing, but I wouldn't stop using that function just to save a relay, I'd prefer to live a little :-)

re-coding can be done with vagcom. For the AC you will need some refrigerant to top it up (online can), but may need to be checked for leaks and pre-vacuum applied. this is not easy if you don't know what you are doing so if you are unsure it is best taken to a service centre.

Hi, thanks for the great video. Need help! I have a 2008 1.6 fabia 3 automatic. Few weeks a got the headlight stopped working. Checked all the fuse and the bulb and they are ok. When i put main beam/full light(the blue symbol), it works but when i want to use only the headlight it doesn't work. What could be the problem please?

The low beams are on separate lamps, have you checked hose? fuse numbers 50 and 54.

Sorry, spelling mistake, I meant 'those' Anyway the next this is check the earthing connections (brown wires) then all other connections. The lighting switch pulls out from the drivers side dash panel, if that works independently then it will be the supply wire you need to trace.

Same as mk1 the central locking comfort unit is above the clutch on the drivers side on RHD vehicles. Your issue is likely to be either a failing key fob battery, broken wire or connection issue behind the rubber bellows on the A pillar or a worn out micro switch within the door lock mechanism. Check, fix, replace these first before venturing further afield IMHO :-)

If the relay for the wipers is not in the scuttle panel near the wiper motor it will be in here. Make sure to eliminate everything else before looking inside here as teh relay will need de-soldering and then re-soldering a new one. Check fuses, power to motor cables etc first. hope this helps and you can get it fixed :-)

The glow-plugs may not come on if the temperature isn't low enough. Test with the temp sender off. Have a look at the glow-plug fuse on top of the battery (6). The relay as shown in this video.

Central locking control module is under the steering column, no relay that I know of.

Hello and thanks for the upload. I have a mk1 1.2 petrol. The remote central locking does not work. The key transmits a signal but nothing happens. It only worked slightly if I pressed the button when the key is pretty much in the car through the drivers window. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Love this car. 👍

New key battery and check the car battery has good charge, 12.6V, the alternator charges 14V+ and the earth to the body has good ground. test locking manually in lock. Then look at all connections in the system. Start with checking fuses, then the wires and connections running into the drivers door by the A pillar. Drivers door lock mech fails by the microswitch on these so if that has never been changed then I would do that as they don't cost much only time/effort. of course the key maybe faulty (rare) check with second key if you have one. I have a videos on some of these somewhere :-)

I also have a problem with the signals on the dashboard, they appear to be working but no light turns on. Also, the hazard lights do not work either. But when I give the left or right signal on the dashboard, they appear as if they are briefly moving much faster .with the hazard lights it moves normally but no bulb lights up no matter what I do. Thank you

Sounds like a short somewhere, I would use a multi meter to test each lamp socket in turn and then move to the wiring testing for continuity and high resistance on each leg. You could try changing the hazard switch to eliminate that. Relays are solid state on PCB for electronic control unit under drivers dsh

You won't, they are integrated within the central electrical control unit as solid state devices somewhere which are maintenance free, any faults will usually be down to the lamps or connection issues within the lamp holder or rarely the indicator stalk witch itself. The indicator noise comes from the instrument panel speaker. Check/replace lamps and connections and spray/clean indicator stalk (I think i did a video on this bit, but may do another) Thanks :-)

hello i wanted to ask you about my problem on skoda Fabia 1.4 mpi 16v elegance 2003 the trip meter showz only zeros when im driving and the first zero comes and goes it moves like secondary of a watch and when i take the key out it shows like this (km 00) and the mintus of the clock move fast like seconds but stays in the same hour if you know what the problem could be i would be really thankful

Make sure you battery is in a good state and ground is good. Take the earth lead off then take the instrument binnacle out and then clean the contact and re-connect. If still not working then the binnacle needs looking at. One thing would be to look at the solder joints on the PCB.

Hello Harvey, I have a Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v Ambiente 5dr. The battery had died due to emergency lights being on all day. I jump started the car and now the car starts properly but the internal lights, front wiper, radio and turn signal (indicators) doesn’t work. I checked the fuses and they all are working fine. What do you think can be the problem?

Check the battery resting voltage, if it keeps draining then you need to find the source. The electrical control unit houses the wiper relay which may have gone bad, check all connections there are good. you may have an earth fault. Do you have a good ground to the battery, check, test, clean, replace.

Harvey I have a problem with my 2004 Fabia mark 1 1.4 tdi. Under 3 degree celcius my car gives P0600 ECU connection error and gives steering pump abs and airbag error in dashboard. Ithink the CAN line has a proble but can you show in one of your videos where the Comfort can exist on the vehicle. Regards,

On right hand vehicles it is under the drivers side lower dash next to the clutch and Hvac unit. You have a connection error or errors with the ECU or with another control unit which may not be easy to trace and fix, Cold weather always affects the battery, so look there first then all connection by taking off and reconnecting - often just that works. Do it systematically checking power and continuity. It is a possibility the ECU is failing also, but check everything else first. You may have your work cut out as it could take a long time. KZbin's 'Diagnose Dan' in Germany would be your man for this :-)

Hey Harvey, great video. I have a problem with my 2003 Fabia, that when i turn on my wipers to second level (speed) it blows a fuse. So i can only use my wipers in the first level (speed) (I dont have english as my native language, but Hope you understand what I mean). I got my windshield wiper engine changed, it didnt help. So I heard that maybe i need to change the whole relay box (also heard somebody call it a "comfort box", not sure if it is the same.) Do you think it could solve my problem? And also I heard from this guy that could help me get a new box, that i need to find some number on the box to make sure i get the right one. Do you know if its a "standard" number or do i need to get it out to find the number? Hope you can answer some of my questions ☺️. Thanks again for the great videos you make!

yes if you have changed the wiper motor and checked the fuse to be the correct size, check the function of the relay. You could just replace the relay or the whole unit (number printed on side as in video, but check with your model). I think that I would check the wiring first to see if there is a resistance fault going to the motor by checking the ohm reading from end to end if you can trace the correct colour wires from the motor to the 'voltage control unit'

Good question, I mention in the video that it is possibly the last one, but haven't tested that. The relay looks the same type as the front wiper one so I'm only assuming that. If you can find a good wiring diagram you may be able to work it out from that. Have you checked the wiring going to the motor, especially by the hinge to the body where it flexes?

The rear resistor and cable of my Skoda Fabia vehicle are intact, but I could not find the relay, I do not know where it is, the light inside the button is flashing, what do you think is the problem?

Take the switch out and check the connection, disconnect/reconnect - test. If still not working replace the switch.

Hello Harvey! I'm having an issue with the oil alert beeping when car gets hot, also something it's stopping the a/c from working properly since it's only cooling at night and on rainy days and sometimes it doesn't work at all. (then it gets hot and beeps) Do you think it could be a relay? or maybe the fan thermo switch?

Sounds like the car is getting too hot and maybe loosing oil pressure. I would also look at the coolant system, thermostat, temp sensor. Any white gunk in oil cap?

@@HatBoyHarvey Thanks for replying! trying to find what the problem was, i drained old coolant and added new one, new radiator, new oil pump. Temp sensor and thermostat are next to be replaced, i will also have a look at the oil cap, thanks for your help!

Hi, have you replaced the switches? these will where out over time. Investigate the wires going into the car by the A pillar behind the rubber bellows for chaffing etc on drivers side first then passenger. If nothing then take the door panels off and look at the connections/harness and examine and test the motor with power attached. If there is evidence of damp inside the door space then moisture will affect the connections corroding them. Make sure battery is fully charged with a good ground to body and all relevant fuses OK.

Problem with electric power steering. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have it too. I checked the fuses, the level in the pump and the plugs at the pump. In the morning it goes a little and there is no power steering, everything is still fine until the end of the day The computer did not show an error? Google suggests weak battery? I have good voltage, steering sensors? and the pump itself? Do you have a video about it? My Skoda has a low mileage of 120,000 km

Have you tested the battery? Often you can have a good voltage, but a poor or failing battery. Test for cold cranking amps and compare with specs, diesels are more battery intense. You also need to check for leaks from the ends of the rack.

Good morning No leaks. Car has 100,000 miles, not too fast for such a failure? The electrician said it was not the battery. Today, after driving 25 km, there was no power steering for a while and everything worked fine? Thank you for the information, best regards. If you find the electric windows start being temperamental at the same time as the power steering then that would indicate an electrical issue. These do suffer from intermittent electrical issues which are often to do with moisture on contacts somewhere. @120K I wouldn't expect the power steering pump to fail so if it's not leaking then I would look to an electrical issue :-)

It wont be the control unit under the dash. These cars suffer from water ingress at the end of the window seals that can upset any electrical connections inside the door space so I wouldn't jet wash the car. Also check the connections behind each rubber door gaiter and the wires for breaks and signs of fraying. It is best to check the drivers side motor connections first if you get to taking off the door panel.

Thank you for your response. I disconnected the left engine plug and put it back and it works for a few minutes. the window on the right rises very hard. is the wiring connection faulty?

I remember watching this video when it came out wishing I would never have to deal with the cars electrics. Today my wipers stopped working on the lowest intermittent setting and they became very slow in every stalk position except the max(top) position, where they are super fast(as usual). The cause can't be the wiper transmission, because last month the wiper motor developed a constant grinding sound and also made wiper slow in every stalk position, which lead me to replace the motor myself, thanks to Harvey's other video, and I also made sure the transmission spins effortlessly. So with a new motor, working transmission, but slow wipers and partially broken intermittent setting I assume the relay is at fault, or could there be another cause? Higher resistance due to broken wire/connector? Or faulty wiper stalk?

Usually it is either the motor or the transmission. Maybe test what current you are getting at the motor with arms up to remove frictional resistance. Are you 100% the mechanism is as it should?

@@HatBoyHarvey How would you suggest I test the current? I do have a multimeter that I have never used before. I assumed one does that by getting access to the wiper motor and probing the connector, but you mentioned doing this with the motor working and blades up so there must be another way without disassembly?

I can't remember if you can access the connector or not if not then take it out to do a back prob test.

@@HatBoyHarvey Hello again. Here are the results from my testing this weekend. First some nomenclature: Stalk position 0 is Off, position 1 intermittent, position 2 slow continuous wiping, position 3 fast continuous. Testing the motor disconnected from the wipers transmission - from position 0 to position 1&2 does not spin, then position 3 starts to spin fast and smoothly, then dropping down to stalk position 2 the motor slows down and starts to vibrate and micro stutter on its own. I couldn't do a back probe test because the connector is very well sealed so no pin can be inserted from the back, so I tested it disconnected from the motor for Voltage and resistance. 4 wires Ignition off, wire 3 has 8volts, rest are 0V Ignition on, wire 3 has 8.45V, rest 0V Stalk position 1, Wire 2 12V, Wire 3 8.45V, rest 0v Stalk position 2 same as 1 Stalk position 3, Wire 1 12V, wire 3 8.45V, rest 0V Resistance on wire 4: Stalk position off 0.24ohm Stalk position 1(all intermittent positions) and stalk position 2 0.31ohm, stalk position 3 0.38ohm The ohm values may be wrong because I couldn't figure out which setting to chose on my multimeter. Could not test the current because no idea how. The meter should be connected in series with the consumer, right. Thought about sticking the two multimeter probes inside the fuse slot, but decided against it. What I did is try the old broken wiper motor which didn't spin but immediately blew the fuse 20A on stalk position 2 so there must be enough current ..? Now I know for sure the problem is not the wiper transmission but either the motor or something with the electrical connection. The results from the multimeter testing don't say much to me, what about you?

great,, now we can say there is supply voltage to all 3 positions and resistances are roughly all the same and low so I'm assuming no issue there. So, if the motor and mechanism are good you can suspect the voltage control unit with relay attached :-(. the relay can be replaced by de-soldering it and replacing with a new one, but is hard to do. Taking the board out and inspecting it there maybe some dry solder joints that may fix the issue (just a guess as I've had a similar issue on the dash cb) then replace the relay.

Thanks Harvey my car won't start up it has spark to all 3 cylinders and I know its getting fuel up to the injectors but the cars not fireing do you think a new battery will sort it because the battery dies as I'm trying to start it

Sorry I don't cover that model. Have a look at the fuse no 8 under bonnet. Take the scuttle panel off and check/test the power going to the motor and rain sensor if it has one. Spray the wiper stalk at the base with electrical cleaner with battery disconnected.

Hi Harvey, I have a Skoda Fabia 1.4, 74kW, from 2001, model Elegance. Suddenly when running I heard a locking sound and my central locking system failed and I only can open the driver door and only by inserting the key into fhe lock. The remote unlocking doesn't work at all.All other doors remains locked. I checked the fuzes and are ok. I tried with the second key and the problem persist. Do you have any idea?

First replace the key-fob bat, then I would look at the wires behind the rubber boot on the A pillar for fraying and fiddle with the connections, if no change it will most likely be the microswitch in the lock, but also check all the electrical connections with the inner panel off. @@HatBoyHarvey Hi, I have replaced the lock itself the one containing the microchip. I have replaced the both keys batteries, and the problem persist. I have checked the cables coming from the door through the rubber to the A piller. They're ok.

Hi there, I have a skoda fabia 07 plate (2007-2014) 1.2 htp, I've looked and it has the brackets for fog lights, I'm trying to connect them, just wondering what I have to do to connect fog lights to the switch, I have got the front foglight logo on the headlight switch, I just haven't done this before so not sure what I need to do, the lights come with wires I'm just not familiar with where to connect them

Have look to see if you can trace the wiring loom connector for the fog lights near the light cluster. if not www.ebay.co.uk/p/1276291527?iid=264992288333 may help. You may need it to be coded in/adapted also, but never done that, sorry. Also retrofitting it manually may be possible as you just need power feed to fuse to light switch to fogs to ground.

If the connector is at the fog light you're cooking with gas. Don't worry about the switch for now as it may just work as is. have you checked the fuses, you may have one that covers it.

@@HatBoyHarvey fuse 37 is the rear fog lights DC DC, and fuse 38 says fog lights. So if I looked in my car should there be something coming of those fuses ? What would I have to look for, as my car has those fuses

Do you know wether there is a stop/brake light relay somewhere all the other parts look intact in my circuit and the lights are still not coming on it looks like there sholuld be one on the wiring diagram. But I cant find it on the schematic for the realy box. no5 says unassigned in same.

Most brake light issues are related to the brake pedal switch and lamp holder contact faults. Also the cable to the high centre brake light can fraye by the hinge :-)

@@HatBoyHarvey I know but I allready changed the brake light swtich and the fuses and the lamp holders are fine. Inspected all the bulbs and changed the brake and reverse bulbs today .This car seems to be older than yours though because the rear hatch furniture is different but it does have a LED high level light that clips in even though the parts catalog says it should have t10 bulbs. May be a retrofit.

@@HatBoyHarvey None of the brake lights light up is the issue and since the bulbs fuses and switch are new theres only the (remote) switching apparatus that should be at fault. High level light seemed tol have been out before and had no gasket which I think seems odd. The combi was supposed to have the led light so that is right but still think there should be a gasket.

If all the obvious areas have been exhausted then you will need to go back to basics and start at the beginning with a voltmeter. It seems the control for the brakes goes through the electrical control unit under the right hand dash. You could trace wires back to there as there seems to be the blk/red wire going to a relay there from what I can see, but I've never had to do that so can only wish you luck.
