I stopped everything I was doing to watch this! My only problem with the coach packs is that they don't contain all the coach types and are a mix of 4 and 6 wheels. I'd rather get a complete pack of the 4 and the 6 wheels separately, myself. Very proud to see you got to look at a test sample from Hattons. You're really moving up in the world and building bridges... or viaducts, I suppose! :P Anyway, I'm still trying to decide what livery I want. I'm a big GWR fan, but I'm also really considering waiting for batch 2 for the LSWR. Really though I'd like to see them do some "generic" liveries to represent private railways. Simple things like, say... all-red, all-tan, something like that. If I had the talent at painting, I'd love to paint them dark green and greem, to resemble the Old Express Coaches from early Thomas series. In any case, these things definitely look worth their pricetag, especially compared to the likes of "BR Mk2 coach #5,330,000" from other manufacturers.

Hi Sam. I know it is not relevant to this but here is some stuff on the Franco Crostis (they still totally baffle me) Unfortunately I never saw The Crostis in action as they were converted eighteen months before I became an active. 92020-29 were built at Crewe in 1955 and had Franco-Crosti boilers. These unusual boilers in which the chimney was only used for lighting up the locomotive, the normal exhaust coming from a separate outlet on the side of the boiler. This was designed to reduce coal consumption. The expected reduction in coal consumption did not match predictions; in addition the engines experienced problems with excessive corrosion. They were rebuilt along more conventional lines in 1959-62 and still retained the preheat boiler (underneath the main boiler) although this was sealed off. In this form they were classified 8F as the boiler was smaller than those on the standard members of the class. They all ended up at Wellingborough shed (15A) where I saw them. Want to know how weird Take a look at this! kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5KXhplna6aJgMU kzbin.info/www/bejne/maSwlpuFibqEb5I kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpvac4iBhZVmipo Apologies for the gatecrashing but when you see the videos I think I will be forgiven

Hi Sam yes there were 6 wheel coaches with sliding centre wheel sets it was known as the Cleminson wheelbase. I should think it required a lot of maintenance and may be part of the reason 6 wheel coaches fell out of favour once the bogie vehicle came into use and engineering solutions were found to stop underframes bending in the centre and distorting the bodies. By the way if Hatton had used the centre pipe on the underframe as a spring wire they could have given the centre wheel set some form of side control I would think fairly easily.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Duly noted Mike, that's very interesting - I can imagine that causing problems for sure! Hopefully won't be the case for these coaches!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Looks like Hatton's have got the designs pretty much perfect "straight out of the box" and even unpainted they look pretty impressive. Maybe with the slidong axle all that is needed is a slight amount of grease? I'm sure that whatever Hatton's do to remedy the small problem won't take very much. Fingers crossed you can get your hand on some of the painted samples to test. As always yet another excellent video, Sam!
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - they seem to be basically there already! The centre axle was getting firmly stuck on something (when I fiddled with it), so I'm not sure if grease would fix it, but it's probably a good idea to lubricate them! Fingers crossed for decorated samples! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

A little note about the GWR livery. It's firmly era 2, as it has the old monogram logo placing them pre-1908. Post grouping, they'd have had crests or the "shirtbutton" logo for 1934-1942. Hatton's haven't announced any post-1908 GWR liveries in any of their future batches just yet, but it would be nice to see. It would be especially nice to see a batch in GWR 1912-1922 crimson lake, which is a bit of a forgotten livery. I'm quite impressed. I'm probably going to get a GWR set from batch 1 and I'm holding out for a CR set which I think will be a batch 3 release.

Firstly, a very good review Sam, you did some research before filming this. Then a big thumbs up for Hattons, it's the first time there are proper RTR models of 4 and 6 wheel coaches, as all there was available were either kits or toys. Although being a generic design they perfectly cover the many variations in use with different companies in the period, and lets be honest, little details like rounded or square angles on window corners and beading is something you're not going to notice soon in OO. I would like Hattons to produce these in O gauge in the future as well, because I think they will be very popular in that scale as many of the RTR locos in O gauge are very well suited for these coaches as do the layouts many people have in this scale. At least I have (brass and RTR) locomotives in 7mm scale where they would pair up well with.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Tom! Absolutely - they did a fantastic job! O gauge versions would be awesome, this is true! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Now all we need is a selection of early era 2 and era 3 coaches with bogies to vary the train loads even more, especially now that Hattons have introduced a selection of lighting options i.e. gas, oil and electric. That would be glorious. Throw in a selection of said coaches with toplight windows and we are good to go. All in all though, Sam, an excellent review as always and looking forward to you reviewing the final release, full livery stock when it eventually arrives.

@ewanmcgregor1464 жыл бұрын
These coaches look really wonderful, very characterful & typical of pre-grouping local coaching stock designs. 6 wheel coaches always seem to me to be on the verge of derailing on tight curves, as there cannot be much side-play in their wheels. In Japan, many mainline diesel & electric locomotives have been built with Bo-Bo-Bo wheel arrangement, meaning they are 3 bogie units, so in model form, the outer bogies are powered, but the central bogie is usually not powered, but rather mounted so they can move sideways in the curves as well as left and right! I have 6 models of these types of locos in my fleet. From Kato, one EF81, one EF210-100, and two EF510-500s. And from TOMIX, one EF210-100 & one EF510-0. This style of design is very reliable & allows the locos to run very smoothly, but I suppose it’s not really an option for 4 or 6 wheeler coaches!

Never seen that sliding centre axle before. I think it might derail on some layouts. These carriages in SR livery would go well with the IOW Terrier to make an IOW pre-war train. The only thing is, you are not allowed to have a 'bog' carriage on the IOW as these were not allowed because of the risk to the Island's water supply!

A unique American question: Our coaches of that era , and really every era had compartments on one side and a pass-through or hall down the other (unless it was “coach” seats where there was a central isle and seats down either side), so one would never never enter a compartment from the outside of the train. So I gather once someone was in their compartment seat they were there to stay for the length of the trip and couldn’t get up to walk around? Also, how would they access the toilet room during travel?
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's usually the case with our British coaches too, but obviously not with these early ones - we're talking very early here! Good question on the toilet, I'm not sure about that!! xD Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I was excited to hear about these when they were announced, but they're really shaping up to something special now. sadly I'm waiting on a couple of the batch 2 liveries, but I'm more certain than ever that I'll be getting a few over time. i hope the broadly-acurate-but-generic idea catches on for rolling stock with wide variations but a basic similarity. i could see the idea working for industrial locos too, a singular freelance design in the style of a locomotive builder with small detail variations, i think there'd be a definite market for that.

Hi Sam I've spoken to Hattons regarding the new 4 and 6 wheel coaches and it seems if you want to control the lighting on DCC you will need a decoder to be fitted. This potentially adds another £20 per coach. Did you know about this was this evident anywhere on your sample. Cheers and keep up the good work.
@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Chris - no I was told not to take the roofs off the lit samples, as they were manually wired up temporarily just to demonstrate the lighting. But otherwise, yes, it's fairly standard that lighting should be controlled via DCC... the alternative being to have them lit all the time! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@Christophoross3 жыл бұрын
@@SamsTrains thanks for coming back Sam. It's a shame they didn't include a reed switch like Hornby as the coaches are lovely but adding the cost of a decoder even a £10 one will increase the price of each coach

Been keeping an eye on the development of these, though hoping that they might make them in N Gauge as well, not had any RTR 4/6 wheel coaches since the old Farish 4 wheel ones from 20+ years ago, if they ever did I'd have to consider getting a third Terrier to make a mini LBSCR layout! As always great video Sam, when I get back into OO I might have to pick up two for my OO Gauge Terrier. ~James

I don't know if this was generally the case, but there definitely were six wheelers in which the centre axle moved.

Yes so I've heard - though apparently they had mechanical issues!! D: Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@michaelliles6934 жыл бұрын
I love the look of these and I have had a GWR set pre ordered for months. No-one appears to have commented on the ugly couplings. I trust that they will sit in NEM pockets? The alternative lighting types are interesting but not sure how one could select which option when ordering.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes they're all NEM - to fit any other than the NEM tension-locks as standard would be suicide for obvious reasons! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I see coaches in the title and thumbnail, I click. You can never go wrong with coaches. Hey Sam, if you’re feeling it, and I’m assuming the samples are yours to keep... you thought about a custom paint job?
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
haha exactly - particularly nice coaches! No sadly the coaches were only mine for a day! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Sam'sTrains Aw that’s a shame. I was very interested in what color you’d use for your coaches :3
@douglasfleetney50314 жыл бұрын
Sam, you need to Google the Cleminson System for three axle coaches. A few still exist and are very interesting in their action. So the middle axle moving is correct. Great to see as I have ordered a full set in the SECR livery. I'm probably dead when the Wife finds out...

The 4-wheel, 5 compartment with oil lighting would be a great match for Annie and Clarabel if painted in Sudrian Yellow. The size is just perfect to be show accurate.

I hope that Hatton's consider scaling the CADs down for N scale versions. I doubt they will, but I can wish. They would fit nicely on my layout.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Drop them an email to suggest it - if enough people express interest, they could well do it! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@DouglasParkinson4 жыл бұрын
@@SamsTrains I will do, you don't know if you don't ask :) From experience though, a lot of companies are hesitant to look at N scale if they already focus on OO, because of the relative difference in the market sizes; N is much smaller than OO, so there are fewer customers who may be interested in a product and as a consequence, the costs of making a model would take longer to recoup than with OO. It's why Model Rail magazine's models are all OO, as an example.

Hey Sam, I have to ask if the four wheel, two axle versions are the same type of coachs that inspired the characters of Annie and Clarabel in the Thomas the tank engine series?

I believe it's a similar sort of thing, for sure! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

These look incredible. Hornby and Bachmann must be mad they delayed bringing out something similar with all the beautiful Victorian locos now being produced. I own an NRM GNR Sterling Single and its manufacturer Rapido was going to bring out a set of prototypical coaches to match it. They delayed and/or got cold feet. Either way, their market has now disappeared with the introduction of these. Life's to short as they say to wait for Rapido and even if they did produce them, I expect they would retail at £60+ each knowing them, so unaffordable for a full train's worth. Now those six wheelers. Hornby Magazine produced an LMS Stove R Van made by Dapol. It couldn't negotiate points, so I told Hattons they had better get the mechanism right or I wouldn't be buying. Can you definitely confirm Sam that the six wheelers are a sound design please ? Also do you or any of your followers known the best collection of GNR coaches which would suit a Stirling Single as and when I eventually get it back from having all its faults corrected !?
@Poliss954 жыл бұрын
Rapido make British outline to special order from others, such as the NRM. It would be those who got cold feet.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
I suppose with hindsight the other manufacturers must be kicking themselves for never doing this - I honestly think they never even considered it! I can't confirm that 100% at the moment, as I did see a small number of derailments, though their performance on the points was very reassuring! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@@SamsTrains Thanks for the feedback. I've also seen one of your recent monthly news videos. Interesting to see Dapol have introduced some 0-gauge Victorian or Edwardian coaches, so they are on the ball.

Great preview Sam. Already got two liveries on pre-order :) Going in for GWR and SE&CR. Did you at any point try taking off the middle wheel set on the 6-wheelers and run them with only four? Hattons mentioned on one of their videos that its possible to do that.

Great review of genesis coaches, do you think there is any demand for the GW crimson livery (1912/1922, I think)?. This the period I model. I have the Kernow steam rail car on order in the crimson option but all else RTR is the choc&cream. GW in the livery for that period would be great.

When you see that the basic 4 wheels coach made by Hornby is sold at nearly GBP 20, you draw your hat off to Hattons. I take a complete GWR and a complete SR set as soon as they are on sale !

You're right - that's crazy isn't it, £20 for that?!? Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@@SamsTrains I've checked the RRP of one on Rails of sheffield : one penny below GBP 19 ! Add GBP 4 and you have the RRP of a Mk 1 Railroad coach... You have Dapol OO vans with a RRP of GBP 12 far more detailed (and with NEM couplings) than the 4 wheels coach from Hornby Railroad...
