Just do your research first. After doing some light research I learned about this class action. Beyond that a company that calls themselves Hanzo, markets themselves like they’re Japanese, and are an American company, already leaves me feeling uneasy. Mizutani or Kamisori have history, and are Japanese. I’d recommend spending your money on a Japanese company with a good reputation for quality. Also look for 440c steel.

i like dealing with yoi scissors ...sakuras, for me, have proven to be the best bang for buck, cant go wrong... i think alot of brands are way over priced & are alot of hype in my humble opinion... been cuttin hair for 30 yrs & i think 500 bucks is my limit for a quality shear... got a set of centrix z-cons ive had for 28/29 years & theyre still rockin, because ive taken care of them & been very perticular as to who i allow to sharpen my tools... personally ive had good luck with brands like centrix & jowells, & more recently the aforementioned sakuras ...the main thing is to buy good quality (not hype) & take good care of them & be very selective as to who sharpens them... a bad sharpener can ruin a good shear, & definitely shorten its lifespan... thanx for the video man, god bless

From what I hear it is absolutely true. Hikari had their Etaro shears made in the same factory and they are directly identifiable side by side though Hikari only offers about 5-6 models at various lengths. Also the Etaro shears cost about $249 - $289 but are finished by Hikari USA. I’d never go near a pair of Hanson’s knowing they use Chinese steel and finished by Chinese scissor smiths. Happy cutting

From what I've been told hanzos are made with mid grade steal and are decent but are definitely not worth the price they sell them at. You can pay 300 and get some shears that are higher quality if you know where to look

The proper steel for any fabric should be the concern when buying shears. Understanding what fabric you work on most either dry or wet. $300 will get you soft steel known as cobalt. If you do all wet cutting these cheap shears are fine. Yes $300 is a cheap shear.. Someone who does long beautiful blondes however should be spending the money towards a solid dry cutter. You would never use a suede shear on denim.. hair is a fabric and should be treated as so.

This video just gave me some new perspective. I'm a beginning barber who bought some thinning and cutting shears off Amazon. Nothing fancy just something to practice and learn with. I been thinking of investing in some good quality shears I'm sure will be a lot pricey. But I don't want to get finessed by false marketing and sales. I'm willing to pay for good quality but not enough to break my bank. So I guess my question would be, do you know of any good quality brands that would be worth investing in? I'm left handed so that plays a huge factor. I've heard of kamisori shears and been wondering about them, have you? If you answered my comment I'd greatly appreciate it. And thank you for the content. Keep grinding and be safe.

I’ve used Hikari and many other brands and Hattori Hanzo are fantastic. So some lame hairdresser who can’t cut hair had an issue. Who cares? I guarantee she wears open toed cheap shoes. Interesting conversation here. I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with Washi shears, and if so, what are your thoughts? Try not getting sucked into the fancy colors fake gem stones and dragon designs which is where I categorize Washi shears. I’m glad you are happy with them but they are certainly not for me. Check out the Etaro shears made in China in the same factory Hanzo uses but finished in the USA by Hikari USA craftsman for a fraction of Hanzos price . You can compare models next to one another and only cost $249 - $289 and they totally out perform the Hatori Hanzo stuff that costs $500 - over a thousand. Happy cutting✌️

Can't under sell the education opportunities they offer with stylists and barbers giving seminars for hanzo. I mean yea they may not be the best steel but I found it hard to find anyone to sharpen my old shears. I've had a few reps which is true but every time I called out a rep they came quick, gave me a loaner pair and let me try various lengths and then gave me my old shears back no hassling over if I'd buy the loaner or not.

I'm 100% confident anyone buying those are paying for the brand more than the material, it's like that with a lot of products. For example, Rolex sells stainless steel watches for $8k and people snatched them up like crazy but how much do you think it cost to make, probably under $1,000. It's all about the hype and people buy into it.

I will say I have 4 pair of Hanzo shears. I look around at other shear companies and really if you are looking at high end shear the prices are comparable. Are they marking them up too much? I don’t know, and really no one MADE me buy them, that was my choice... what Hanzo does do well (at least for me) is customer service, they sent a rep through my salon door with shears in hand to try. And th rep has also come through just to snatch up my shears and send them off for sharpening for me. I have not had one other company come through my doors. Then I have the stay sharp subscription that covers sharpening and if my shears get stolen or dropped and broken they replace them for free...

suggest you look at sensei, hakari, sokoto, Kenchii, shisato, You can move to many excellent shears. These are all higher end name brand. Have been sharpening these for 14 plus years. If you go with shears that have real hitachii made steel you are going to find the weight is lighter. Japanese Hitachi ATS-314 Super Cobalted stainless steel will hold an edge for years. cobalt is very hard. and at the same time they are light in your hand. 440c can be excellent much depends upon how they are hardened. 314 gold are somewhere in the middle. NEVER buy a coated shear if you expect it to hold an edge.. the metal is soft as it can be. This is why I would only sell a pakistan shear.. some want BLING over actually having a shear that performs. Trust me I see everything from $5 to $2000 shears. if you have questions about shears I do suggest that you talk to the person who has their hands on shears and sees how they are working.. your local sharpener. I will be happy to talk to you.. I have not seen every shear but I can tell you pretty close to 60% of the shears sold into the USA are chinese. Hanzo get their steel their pivot assembly and forging in china. They do not use Japanese steel. They do generally hold an edge. Everyone I have seen has been cast.. Cast shears break easily but do hold an edge.

I'm pretty sure most shear steel from the lowest to highest quality is from Japan. With that being said most shear companies are in China so I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. I've never been one to pay top dollar for shears because 1 I don't use them enough and 2 it's pretty easy to sharpen them if the go dull as along as their a minimum of 440c steal. I can't see any shear company spending more than $50 to make their product (material included) but that's just my opinion though 🤷🏽

There is no chinese made shear that one can find that uses anything but chinese made steel. They are good at stealing your money if they mark the shear as made with japanese steel. 440c is not always 440c that one sees from Japan.. the steel from Japan uses a proprietary mix.

I have been dealing with China for the last 20 years and I will tell you ,that the mark up from China is incredible. The only country in the entire world, where you can get away with this.....There are tons of products sold in China(I love high quiality kitchen knives for example, but mines are NOT China made) and marked as made from japanese stainless steel and I believe ,that it is very possible some of the products to be really made from japanese steel. However the cost is really low.On the other hand there are very HIGH quality products in China, but they are expensive. In this case with Hattori Hanzo I see it just like great marketing and that is what makes them expensive. The cost in China is probably around $5 to $20 a pair,so you can imagine the profit margin here.

Hanzo is a great shears, if you only have hanzo. They are okay, standard shears. Nothing special but over priced. Different story when you have an option, get your hands one of Mizutanis, and you will be able to feel the different between okay shears and handmade quality shears. 1200$ HH can't even compare with 500$ Mizutani which is the cheapest of Mizutani. When you are looking for 500$ above shears, Hikari and Mizutani never let you down. But Mizutani alone, it's like a different level brand it self. Nothing can compare. Except maybe Naruto.

@@gapeachnow26 It is an ok shear. My recommendation is dont buy bling.. aka color shears. you will always end up with a bevel edge rather than a convex. Generally (not always) the quality of the metal will not be as good as a stainless shear primarily because when they bake on the coating the annealing will not be as good as the original shear strength.. (meaning you will need to resharpen more often as the metal is softer and will go dull faster) Washi as a brand is a mid quality shear in my estimation. So long as you keep them sharp I think you will be happy.. but that means 4-6 months.

I have 3 pair of Honzos. 8", 6.5" and wide textures. No problems. I usually sharpen my other shears, but not these. I have their sharpening program. Our last rep said they used laser technology to sharpen them. Our current rep says that's not true, they use Japanese wet stones. He knows because that was his job for them before becoming a rep. I don't think the old rep was lying. Maybe she was misinformed. I believe the quality is on point and it's ok for someone to make a profit. Check out how much Nike's cost to make their top dollar shoes. When I first started barbering I was buying $35.00 shears. After a couple of years I broke down and bought a $200.00 Tenyo shear. The $35.00 shear I would have to sharpen them 4 or 5 times a year and after 3 years they were nubs. The Tenyo's first sharpening was after 5 years of constant use. About that time Japanese steel was surpassing the German steel. That was in the early 80's, before all this Chinese crap. You have to understand even though there are different Chinese brands. They all belong to the Chinese government. The Chinese government is a truly communist government. By the way my Honzo rep comes by regularly and texts us regularly.

Someone will buy them. I’ve used them before and loved them which is why I decided to get them. I have four other sets ranging from 75 to 300 and they all work great but one requires a lot of sharpening they’re almost done lol Now if it IS true that ALL shears are less than a buck to make ill be bummed..and they have a great refund or exchange policy, so there’s no commitment if I don’t like them.

I cut everyday for 2 years with a Hanzo Talon 7" swivel. They were almost $800 after tax. Absolutely not worth the money. Most of their shears are ridiculously overpriced. Even if they were 100% from Japan, no shear is worth that much money. I will say, those HH-VT1's are worth every single penny ($691 plus tax now). They're extra hard steel made for cutting dry hair and you can literally erase any weight line without changing the length of the cut. Their HH13T's are the VT1's precursor and are equally as awesome. I did find a $25 dupe for the HH13T's on amazon (made by a company called Tijeras) and I'd recommend them to ANYONE. I haven't found a dupe for the VT1's (carbon blend steel, angled teeth, etc) which is why I recommend those specific ones. Aside from the VT1's, I will NEVER purchase or recommend Hanzo to ANYONE. #FRESHSHEARS and #OLIVIAGARDEN are truly the way to go. They both offer the $50 trade in program.

All their reps are licensed barbers/cosmos and they offer 20% off if you purchase direct from a rep rather than going through the website. If you go to their site US site there’s a contact number if you call and inquire about a shear you’re interested in the rep will give you a great deal and include some extra stuff for free in your order whether it be spray bottle, oil for shear maintenance. I highly Recommend Mizutani.

It’s not a penny or a dollar each but my guess is less than $75 each to make. By US Customs law ( 7 CFR 65.400) an item must be labeled so that the end user (consumer, stylist or barber) can see the country of origin. It must be legible and placed in a conspicuous location on the product. It is legal for them to import Japanese steel in to China and do all the manufacturing in China. They can still say “Japanese steel “, but it must say “made in China” on the retail packaging. If you do the research, and I believe Hanzo even admits this, yes they are made in China. Most likely it is all Chinese employees making them in China at a factory using Japanese steel and there are probably a few Japanese engineering people overseeing the production. So, they can do this legally. That is, make them in China and state they are made of Japanese steel and all the other 100 year old traditions, blah, blah, blah, etc. And it may be done in such a way to mislead you, but by US Customs law it’s technically correct as long as the retail box is marked “made in China” so that the end user can see it is made there. Look closely at the box if you have one. The $1000 + price tag is merely an image and cult following that’s been created as a result of fancy marketing and that’s why they have an army of sales people to convince you it’s worth it. Are they good shears? Absolutely! But you’re buying a Lexus for the price of a Ferrari. Many hair shears are made in China and have “Japanese 440C” or “Japanese steel” stamped on them. That does not mean they were made in Japan. If you want actual “made in Japan” shears you need to find a company that manufactures them from Japanese steel in Japan from start to finish. They will be proud to state that up front and not just suggest it. According to the lawsuit, Hanzo shears are made in a Chinese factory that also makes pet shears. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s probably not the image Hanzo would want the “Hanzo nation” to think about. What I think is even more misleading is the Hanzo “lifetime “ warranty. If you read it closely, it’s really no warranty at all! It clearly states that the only thing that’s covered is a manufacturing defect. That means something that happens when being manufactured, not after it’s in your hands. Like a hole in the metal or bent handle out of the box, etc. It would have to be something that slipped past quality control. Hanzo indicates that if you have used them more than a few times it’s likely not going to be covered. The Hanzo warranty states that failures due to manufacturing defects will generally do so the first or second time the product is used. Hanzo also states if you have used the shears for a few months or more in reliable service any damage is rarely determined to be a warranty defect. They don’t cover damage from dropping them, nicks, bent tips, fair wear and tear, nothing. It’s all something you would be required to pay them extra for to repair it. But don’t take my word for it, just read the full Hanzo warranty on their own website. All the lawsuit papers, motions, affidavits, etc are all public information at the San Bernardino court. I think there is a Colorado salon with a story about it on their website. Just Google “Hanzo lawsuit “ and you will find more information. The Hanzo motto: “Choose Wisely”

@@tattoomike504 it’s not false. It’s exactly what the Hanzo warranty states if you read it. If they chose to replace the shears you broke, that’s great, but that doesn’t mean it’s covered under their warranty or that they had to, the rep just chose to help you out.

Bro you should only have to sharpen good/great quality shears once every two years which is also determined by the metallurgy, the smaller the molecule the smoother the cut and blade longevity. In my experience with cheap Amazon or pop up ad shears like Kinsaro they have fallen apart after about a hundred cuts going Klink klink all over the shop and the 440c steel is much inferior to 440A or sintered powered cobalt or Molybdenum Vanadium and Cobalt like Hikari. Happy cutting✌🏻

Hanzo shears are pure garbage. I’m a barber but also an amateur blacksmith and woodworker for fun. They’re shears are awful the grind on them is the work of kids and they feel like tin. It’s all hype. Most shears should be made out of 440c steel which is like an introductory steel it’s not bad but a shear made out of that shouldn’t be more than $100. Mizutani is better but not by much... they’re all hype as well. A lot of the terms they use to describe how they’re shears and metals are made don’t even make sense, and are not true methods, that alone is a red flag. When it comes to shears forget the brand only pay extra if it’s a good metal (for example ats-314) other than that all shears are exactly the same just depends on how often you’re willing to sharpen them.

If you clearly read the entire class action suit, you’ll find it was filed by a cosmetologist, who is also a manufacturer of Japanese stainless steel shears. Hanzo clearly explains the blades and parts are made of Japanese stainless steel in Japan, those assembled and then shipped in China to the United States, and other countries for marketing and sales to barbers and cosmetologist through representatives, also touring with free educational classes. Anyone can file a class action suit, and this one happens to have been filed by a competitor. I have four different shares, the kamikaze, the talon, texturizing, shears, and detail shears… I love all of them, and they do have to be sharpened every 6 to 12 months.

The reality is they are ripping off the operators. I sharpen them.. the shears are primarily a cast shear. I mostly see the shears in big cities .. People seem to think .. Super pricey must be great shears. I had one every time I did the set and sharpening.. went back to check before assembling.. the blade had moved internally and the set was off again. Are you going to retract this video AND make another separate video statement about it? It is not like doing a hikari or kenchii.. which are the quality that Hanzo claims. Feel free to buy what you want but if you really want to get your money worth talk to your local sharpener who deals with fixing shears day in and day out. They take a lot of pride in their products they make. Hattori Hanzo Shears cost way more than what you would think to make and thats why they send them to China to save a little in the assemble. I have been to China and visited the assemble shop where the shears are assembled. Yes they pay a small amount to have them assembled there. (They are already expensive. Would you like them to cost even more. I wouldnt. Thats why they are assembled in China) They are most definitely made in Japan and assembled in China. I have seen it. They are high quality and they are worth th money. I have heard the compititors have been circling rumors to try to give the brand a bad name. I dont work for Hattori Hanzo or any affiliates to say this. Dont believe the lies and gossip you hear from those who like to gossip.
