Our cows liked pea straw the few years we grew peas, maybe even better than the barley straw. We got some barley straw from Balzak, good but expensive trucked that far to us. With the grass still green the cows wouldn’t like that dry stuff for sure but that’s how we tell when we need to start feeding. Bad weather headed in next week. Yuck. Take care.

This pea straw was desiccated. Will make bedding and paid the same price as the barley straw.

When we used sweet pea straw straight from the field the cows would line up at the fence and could not wait to get into it

We bought a couple loads of Grass seed straw to get through last winter.. I called to get a couple loads for bedding this year.. they were already out. Both this year and last year, most of the grass straw went north.. from what I understand, mostly to Alberta.. they were loading 5 or 10 B-trains every couple of days. Gotta do what you gotta do... and hope everything works out!!

I have no idea how well pea straw works for bedding, but growing oats and peas together for hay or silage.. cows absolutely love it.

I’ve fed pea straw quite a bit mixed with my hay for the cows. If it was sprayed with regalone as a desiccant it can be tough to get them to eat it, I think because of the chemical smell. I’ve fed it treated with roundup and it was fine. We usually give a little grain with the straw to give them a protein source for digestibility. I prefer feeding barley straw though. We might try putting molasses on our straw instead of grain supplement this winter if it pencils out better than feeding grain.
