You can't make this stuff up...
After the GDI injector replacement, the 2016 Santa Fe runs smoothly once again.
However, after the test drive one code is pending: P0507- Idle RPM Too High
.....what the heck?
Nothing left to do but diagnose this P0507 trouble code.
Did I miss something during engine reassembly?

I have a 2012 hyundai santa fe with the 3.5L V6 and carbon buildup on the throttle body is a known issue. Shortly after we bought the car we were sent a TSB about it, the dealer updated the ECU software. Now every time we shut off the car you can hear the throttle cycling a handful of times. The dealer where we bought the car keeps trying to get us in for an "air intake cleaning" service for $280. Once a year I take the air box off and use some throttle body cleaner to clean the deposits around the throttle plate. Most of the issues I've had with the car have been due to 1) the engine oil pressure switch which are prone to leaking and sit under the intake and 2) the oil filter housing which sprung a leak last year. Despite my biases regarding hyundai quality we've had a an uneventful 9 years of ownership despite it being my wife's daily driver and cold Alberta winters.

Try the Subaru upper cylinder head cleaner. Best product on the market and actually endorsed by a vehicle manufacturer. I think you use it every service or every second service at less than $20 a can and 10 minutes of your time last time I used it. That in combination with Subaru injector cleaner and your car will thank you! Other manufacturers use it! I know you can buy other branded products, though they are very costly and in my opinion are way to caustic, that's why you would use them once a blue moon.

I was once taught by a mechanic to never clean the throttle body directly with cleaner. Spray some on a rag and wipe. By spraying directly, you cleaned out any lubricant that is at the pivot points, causing it to bind. Also possible that someone once took the buttrfly out and now it's not centered on the shaft. Loosen the screws a bit and cycle the butterfly, then tighten again. Not sure what to use as lubricant on the shaft ends.

My 99 Honda Accord V6 throttle body had a special molybdenum adhesive coating applied in a ring around the bore, where the butterfly valve comes into contact with it. I accidentally cleaned it off with carb cleaner and a superfine grit grey scotch brite thinking it was carbon buildup. My idle was then surging repeatedly up and down about once per second, but replacing the IAC valve fixed that so I must've ruined it by letting a lot of carb cleaner soak it. I tried taking the IAC apart and drying it out but no luck. Replacing with an intermotor brand one worked. I ended up buying a moly coating that cures and dries like paint and carefully painting it back on with a fine artists brush and let it dry overnight. It's worked great for years since then.

A few years ago I bought a 2006 elantra with the 2.0 engine, I fixed what was needed and sold it to my friends girlfriend who was going through bankruptcy and needed a car because her 07 Sante fe was repossessed, I only charged her the original price and only for parts I had installed which included a new radiator all new front wheel studs and nuts because they were on so tight that most of them broke off when I had to replace the front rotors, the pads were new, all told I put about 500 into it and sold it to her for 2,500. She paid me back a little at a time and when she found a good job, she was an accountant but was bad with managing her money, she eventually bought a 2017 Sante fe and gave me the elantra To sell for her, a neighbor of mine bought it then his father passed away and he sold it and took his father's car, that car was driven from NJ to Maryland, from Maryland to Ohio back to Jersey and to Maryland a few more times with zero issues, she even got a speeding ticket for doing almost 90, did I mention that the car had 199,000 miles on it when I bought it? What happened to Hyundai since, that 2 litre engine was great and the car was fun to drive, the only thing wrong with it was that the insurance was double what it was for any comparable make and model, I to this day don't know why and nobody had an answer for why, I tried several insurance companies and they didn't know either, that car is still running today six years after I bought it, my neighbors nephew is a mechanic and he used to work for Hyundai, he came over to inspect and gave it his seal of approval, the only thing he reccommended was doing the timing belt because we didn't know when and if it was ever done, he did it at the shop he works at now for the price of parts only.

Great repair and NPR the best repairs. The more I see these direct injected engines give trouble at relatively low miles the more I'm not interested in owning something with that technology just to get improved gas milage. I suppose the manufacturers are forced to use these high maintenance technologies very high fuel pressures and carbon fouling of valves to conform to strict emission and efficiency requirements. Your spot on with your negative observations working on these late model money pits.

i got a p0101 code on my mazda 3 2010 right after i replaced the radiator fan assembly, fairly easy job but i tough that maybe a crack the intake manifold or created a vacuum leak on the seals, or maybe a purge valve leak, it end up been a dirty throttle body, but after cleaning it i got a god damn p0507, i drove the car for a week but still the same, the way i fixed it was disconecting the battery for 30 minutes, plug it back, start the car and let it idle for 20 to 30 minutes in park and after that 15 to 20 minutes in D, now my idle is perfect, it seems the Mazda 3 2010 had an issue correcting the TB idle after cleaning.

@chillybrit2334
@chillybrit2334 Жыл бұрын
Unfounded indeed. Given how "clever" the computers and monitoring thereby is, why would it throw an idle too high code as opposed to a throttle idle position poor performance code or some such? Maybe there is no stored value for the idle position of the throttle plate in the expectation that the throttle body will become carboned up and the value will therefore increase over time. Maybe it's fine and it seals against the ever growing carbon ring day to day, but disturb it - it no longer sits in its carbon gunk happy spot quite right leading to this. As bad as the carbon build up is on valves and throttle plates with GDI petrol engines I'd much rather deal with this than the emissions control systems on modern diesels.

To answer your last video question you posed. It's a hard balancing the new vs old debate as a mechanic. Something I debate with myself all the time. I tend to agree with you, that if you want the most reliable, cheapest in the long-term, functional transport on offer. You can't beat the late 90's through the 2000's cars in manual = potential for hundreds of thousands of relative cheap motoring km's with a built in tolerance of short term neglect. The peak of engineered to last. But the allure of later model cars, which are mostly WAY better to drive in every way. Fuel consumption while making more power, NVH, far superior safety and connectivity etc, etc. BUT modern buyers have skewed the market to trendy, useless models. The biggest problem with modern engineering heavily geared towards emissions and longevity pulled right back to planed obsolescence. Is that they now have no window for mistreatment before the cost gets real big, real quick. But they're being sold to a generation of people that grew up with treating their cars like crap without consequences. It's a failure of the auto industry to educate people of what their buying. It's gone full circle back to the muscle car era. You can have all the fancy modern stuff cheap. But you need to service it thoroughly within an inch of it's life like clock work!!! For example . . . In Aus, it became a legal requirement to speak to the customer about their driving profile before buying a modern diesel due to the DPF requirements. Because they were selling them like cheap hot cakes to people that felt the power on amazing fuel economy. Only to have cars breaking down in only 25,000km due to only dropping the kids to school in urban sprawl. Enter Toyota's billions lost on dpf payouts. Small side note : I notice every where in America doesn't blink at these higher mile cars like they should be perfect still. It's generally accepted that at 200,000km (120ish miles), you should expect a mistreated car to die and a good car to start needing more expensive work much more regularly.

Great comment. In general, new cars obviously offer the latest in comfort and convenience. That is what 97% of car users (I hesitate to call them "drivers" haha) want in a car...a comfortable appliance. The other maybe 3% actually enjoy the experience of driving a machine that has inherent character, of shifting your own gears, of gracefully carving a corner in a car that most people would have sent to the crusher 10 years ago :)

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 100%. I can't move on from my 2002 mazda6 wagon. Driving dynamics that would shame any 3 series of the time. Better engine performance with better fuel economy and with rear seats that fold flat at the pull of 2 handle located at the back of the luggage space. Huge practically. My one gripe as is common on this era of mazdas across the board in Australia. It tuning to meet emissions! It says it can take mid-level fuel but anything less than the top premium fuel and it sounds like a diesel in a high gear, at low rpm, under load(hill). I would wager a loss of negligible power to knock a couple of degrees off that part of the map. But I'd assume the emissions would go up. Love your channel Ivan!

They make those throttle bodies so cheap that they don't have bearings, and You're lucky if it's even a bushing surface, so it ends up getting worn enough to make the butterfly bind. When you man handle it like you did, it just allows the butterfly flap to slide a bit on it's screws and find a new center... On my girls 2010 Dodge Nitro (jeep liberty clone), it has plastic gears on the inside and they had broken off two teeth--- and the throttle would go from not working, to then getting stuck WOT-- so that was fun, and I almost crashed it a couple of times getting it home. Who puts plastic gears in a throttle body? Terrible design-- I bought a chineesium on Ebay for $100. It has worked for 2 years now.

Hey, 1 thing I recall with Honda and its injector replacement, a crank relearn had to be performed at minimum. Possibly ecm reset too... to reset fuel trims and I can't recall what else. More and more vehicles are requiring resets of all sorts after repairs due to the fact they try to compensate for when issues are beyond preprogrammed thresholds, etc. If that makes sense. So new parts installed they may have prior memory to old worn parts in a manner of speaking. Just giving you a heads up. I know this is a Hyundai... but I've seen it across all makes.

On some cars such as my 2001 Nissan Stagea M35 (VQ Series 2.5L Turbo Engine), if you back drive the throttle plate _AT ALL_ let alone being rough with it (eg to clean the TB), its almost certain death to the unit. Don't know why exactly it happens, but some Nissan owners have found out the hard way not to do it, and plenty of warnings on the various related forums. Only parts that have gone bad are two coil on plug packs and a vvt solonoid. And two turbo regelator valves that I later did a resistor delete on. Who need turbo regulation anywsys. Full send! I get about 1.8bar at 5000rpm. And with the tune and upped injection pressures timing and such its rather hard to not smile while driving it especially in the winter when the power comes on the rear just wants to step out nicely.

Is this the same model Hyundai that is subject to engine fires with leaks in the high pressure fuel rail as well as short circuits in the ABS module also common to Kia vehicles? I believe that Hyundai USA has issued a bulletin advising people of such affected cars not to park them in their garages.

@mazes8931
@mazes8931 Жыл бұрын
There is nothing structurally broken, so why would it be a money pit? Just because they had bad luck a couple of times and it needed a throttle body cleanup after 150.000 miles? I don't own a Hyundai or Kia, but where I live they are considered pretty reliable.
@JoseSilveira-newhandleforYT
@JoseSilveira-newhandleforYT Жыл бұрын
@@mazes8931 Because too many little mechanical parts are showing wear and their replacement is expensive. A few more thousand miles and there will be something else, and this engine is very service unfriendly, making man-hours even more expensive than the expensive parts to replace. BTW, that was not simply a throttle body cleanup - there is mechanical wear causing it to grip (Ivan managed to avert it, but it will continue to wear out).

Hi Ivan, at 6:30 where you were manually moving the throttle flap. WHY was it making scraping noises? Shouldn't it only scrape when in the minimum position, that looked like it was over about 10 to 15 deg range, this would hinder its home position. Even a used unit would be better than what that motor has now.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Please! Just be very careful with Back-Driving the throttle plate Ivan! This would likely also apply to any other Nissan of around the same age and similar engine (Think Z35 and Z37, or Altima / Maxima as they use similar engines).
