Horror games are a bit of a niche topic on this channel, so I figured we'd revisit and talk about some recent horror games I've played that at the very least give me some hope for the future of the genre.
Chapters:
0:00 - Spooky, Scary...
2:14 - Welcome to Indigo Park!
8:50 - That time in the 90's (Crow Country)
13:35 - RPG Maker (Fear and Hunger 2 - CONTENT WARNING!!!!)
21:01 - Conclusion

I'm glad to see that people are more willing to be a little critical of Indigo Park. To be honest, people trying to hype it up as this next big step in mascot horror always felt like they were comparing it exclusively to Garten of BanBan and not the other array of mascot horror games that go under the radar. It's cute and from a creative standpoint the effort put in for the animation and music was defiantly a highlight, but as a game experience it was no different than other inoffensive entries into the genre. I hope in the future more is done with its setting and it tries hard to push the horror aspect and not just the mascots themselves.

The creator is a bit of a novice and I think he's still learning. He re-did chapter one of garten of ban ban and the final scene is reminiscent of the chase. Hopefully with a budget and with more experience developers he can do more and go back and redo chapter 1. After all I think even bendy and the ink machine redid the first chapter after it was done.

If it has heart, effort, and potential. Even something as put together as Indigo park chapter one will have the chance to be beloved. I say it because the creator is relatively new to game development and is going to be taking classes. Yet with a funded budget for his game, I'm sure he will do great and maybe redo chapter 1 later on.

Hope they try something like Zombie U, the Wi zombie game forgamplay. Basicly open spaces with creepy vives, having this "you are alone" tension, in open areas, kinda what the backrooms games try to pull, but effective because is a literall abandone area. Just, need to rework puzzles and stuff, make it n actual reason, not just it being a puzzles for it being a puzzle. Has potential. Hopefully August will be playable eventually cause he's super cool, the descendent of our God of Ultra Violence from the first game! I typically can't play horror games myself, I have no problems with dark subject matter but I don't have the best aim or reaction time (especially if it's in first person), so this type of gameplay is perfect for me.

When it comes to Indigo Park, I give the game and it's creator A LOT of Leeway for a few reasons. 1). It's the creators first time making a video game that is an original title. 2). In order to avoid major costs the creator used a TON of premade assets and code in order to make the first FREE chapter. 3). I applaud the original assets and creativity behind said IP. 4). Rambley has to be one of the most endearing yet curious AI character creations and his potential could go anywhere in the story. That being said this developer is very open with his audience on his experience and how he and his friends are pretty much making this as their learning to make it. So while yes criticism is deserved in the areas MangaKamen described and are justly so, I still want to be as positive as I can and encourage UniqueGeese any chance I can because they and their team have amazing potential to breath new life in the Mascot Horror Genre.

Lisa the First is directly inspired by Yume Nikki while Lisa The Painful maintains that dark atmosphere with a post apocalyptic setting and very interesting story. There are also very good fanmade entries that the creator has embraced as canon parts of Olathe's world. I'd say it's more than enough content for its own video.

I'm counting the days until Kamen unlocks the Light in the Pmoonverse. Gameplay? Grindy, but different each game and teeth-gritting challenging. Story? Mature. Characters? Flawed and complex, to degree people still quarrel whether their actions are to be vindicated. It's what restored my faith in indie gaming scene years ago and hold to the standard to this day. It's a universe that's full of flaws and not the perfect, but doing things that almost no other game i ever played even dares to approach.

I do remember the time when I yanked out a mandrake in order to kill a big wolf, but because I didnt have earplugs on, after the mandrake scream, both the wolf and eye stood quietly for a couple seconds, then we just both dropped dead at the same time. A lot of 1st person Horror i notice will have the character be silent, which is nothing wrong with that per say, it helps put "you' in the role. But certain games try to have the self insert/ likeable MC but dont give them much outside of wiki/lore context. However a game that does this really well is My Friendly Neighborhood. Gordon is a first person protag, but he talks a lot more compared to others. But the greatest thing i love about him is, he has a "character" his VA is great but you can see how he is and his beliefs by just playing the game itself. You dont need to search up "game ending explained" or connect dots to future plot points. You can see how he is and he can easily be relatable, or at least likable

I also played Crow Country and Fear and Hunger (both) and completely agree. Crow Country was perfect for me because I found that while I liked the older graphics of og resident evil games, and the atmosphere, I just couldn't get around the awkward controls and fixed camera angles. But crow country felt really smooth for me, which I liked a lot. Plus, solving the puzzles in it have been some of my favourites just altogether. The main thought I had with it was just how forgettable and boring the bosses were (apart from the last). Most of the enemies really besides the grinners and those bony tall guys were kind of just meh, imo. Though I really love how the zombies sound, very haunting noises. Fear and Hunger is something just so unique altogether. Maybe because I am just not used to horror RPG games but just nothing else has really given me those vibes of 'horrors beyond imagination'. Fear and Hunger Termina especially I have just really loved. While it plays like a game, it just felt like a movie to me. With how all the characters get introduced to each other and have so much personality, how you can organise your team in different ways, how you watch as time passes by and events occur. And the music of some of those boss battles is some of the most epic I have ever heard. And I think it helps from the WW2 sort of vibe and setting, but the horror and tragedy in it just feels so real, in ways the first game didn't really, at least not imo. It just felt so mature somehow, I guess. Finally, the crow mauler is the best stalker enemy since probably the alien from isolation imo (and the og nemesis from re3). It is so haunting with the music and because of how deadly it is it terrifies me every time i accidentally wonder straight into it in a dark hallway. The panic from trying to escape it hoping your characters still can, is so good. Also, as a massive slasher lover I really appreciate the nod to Art the clown in Termina, as Art from the Terrifier films is one of my favourite slashers

Unfortunately, I don't like horror games. I do have a fascination with horror and elements of horror, but I hate playing horror games. I already have problems with action games when I mess up or the character doesn't react the way I want, but horror is horrible for me because it's that frustration on top of not being able to defend myself the way I can and have. I've been through a lot so horror triggers PTSD in me, and it becomes too much as I actually have a legitimate defensive rage build up when I've tried. Even when I was good at surviving through some of The Evil Within 2's demo, I hated playing it, and I had enough when it forced me into a scripted scene where a zombie thing attacks the player as they go through this narrow doorway. I mean, I saw it coming a mile away so I did the sensible thing and capped the corpse, thinking if it were to spring up a bullet would rouse it and damage it. When it didn't move I thought I was safe and then it attacked! I was very much upset with that, and more than just that my strategy didn't work. It was stupid that I was made to suffer for no reason, my smarts and tactics meant nothing to the code of the game, and I felt cheated beyond cheated. I felt like it was pure spit in my face that disregarded my experience. No, someone just wanted the player to suffer and they forced a scare upon them instead of crafting a system to reward them for smarts and strategy. I honestly felt abused because that's exactly what my abusers did; they forced me into situations I had no control over and while I fought back and won, both in game and in life, the victory was hollow, tainted by the fact that I had to endure such horror to begin with because it was forced upon me. I mean, it was already stressful enough dealing with the monsters and oppressive atmosphere, but that pretty much sent me away from horror games because if I'm not allowed to defend myself, if I'm not rewarded for thinking ahead in terrible situations then I won't be forced into them. It may be virtual but it just feels abusive to me. I hate being scared and decided to face my fears, hoping that the game would provide a rewarding experience, but the developers abused their power and coded the situation to kick your teeth in regardless, so I don't do them. There may be many great horror games and such out there, but having been through abuse I don't enjoy being oppressed and forced into characters that are left defenseless and coded to be stupid if not coded into unavoidable situations. I hate that feeling because it takes away the agency I know I do have in life, something I had to be broken to discover, and the power to fight back, to fight smart and be prepared is something I won't sacrifice. Horror games take too much of that away for me to enjoy them. I don't care if that's the idea, I still hate it because it just feels like being trapped in abuse all over again. That being said I can love things with horror in them or horror elements. I love things like Hellsing and Devilman, and Berserk. I like seeing characters fight back, and I'm sure I'd absolutely enjoy video games around those franchises! They have horror within them, but they aren't just horror. They aren't just about suffering or making the audience feel pain. There's a bigger message there and I can better handle it because it doesn't take away my agency. I get to follow a story as a viewer and have fun watching the characters work through situations. Still, even then I do avoid a lot of pure horror stuff because too much of it focuses on making victims helpless for the sake of the killer so they can paint a bloody scene. I prefer horror with a story that doesn't sacrifice integrity for the sake of a scare. Well, that's why I don't do horror, but I do love the designs and mythologies of horrifying creatures, even the lore of some modern series are fascinating, but I study them instead of experience them because the pain within me is too great. I just can't experience horror without fear turning into rage. My mind won't allow it. That being said I can absolutely jump into something like Demon Souls or Elden Ring and be fine, even if those stories are a bit too depressing for my liking. I could still have fun with the games and their worlds because I don't have to sacrifice my ability to fight. Can't play Resident Evil though, but I am happy that series spawned Devil May Cry! Funny enough I also love The Nightmare Before Christmas and Halloween is my favorite holiday. Somehow I just love the horror aesthetic in spite of everything. I even read the whole What If or Else World where Batman became a vampire. I just don't like experiencing horror without idk some element that lets me enjoy it. I like dark stories that explore something, but not just things that are pain and torture. Sadly, horror games just feel like too much torture for me. Learning about them though is fun, and even watching someone else play is fun too. I just can't do it myself. Well, there's a comment for ya! Hope that helps you with the algorithm! Been loving the videos!

The way you pronounce BanBan hurts the soul(less cashgrab that it is). Regardless, while the gameplay for Indigo Park is pretty simple I do hope Mason/UniqueGeese is able to explains on it more now that they’ve actually got a budget to work with. Wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if they went back and redid chapter 1 at a later date to make it more polished/interesting

Rambly is the only good part of Indigo Park and he is GREAT. But the game world doesn’t look believable and it’s super barren in terms of gameplay, it’s nothing more than a haunted house walking simulator. Its “scares” are predictable and prescripted and of course it has a knockoff Poppy Playtime ending chase (even the head getting cutoff is ripped off from Poppy Playtime). Molly could mimic voices and it never mattered in gameplay, the only reason most people even know is because it says so in the game over screen, we couldn’t even have Molly trying to lure the player into traps by mimicking Rambly? I am glad it at least doesn’t have a grabpack/drone/etc gimmick. Anyway sorry for rambling

5:29 - 6:23. If *I* saw a human-sized anthro macaw with blood dripping down its beak pry through a metal door and scream before charging at me, I don't think my first instinct would be to smack it with my only light source. At least with the blood, you can argue that it could be Mollie's and *not* her victims', but she's still strong enough to force a metal door open like how Jack Baker can break down a wall in Resi 7. Sure, it's not as impactful, but I still don't think I would fuck around and find out with a creature that strong just because I didn’t see her tear apart some other unfortunate soul with just her beak and talons. I don’t even disagree that Indigo Park doesn’t do much to stand out, this being Mason's first original project notwithstanding. It was just this one part that bugged me. You know what I *do* think could’ve been changed to better establish how dangerous Mollie is though? If the death screen/jump scare had Ed struggle a bit more than just trying to push her back and getting knocked over. Maybe have Ed punch her or smack her with the flashlight like you suggested and she either tanks it, suffers minimal damage, or the flashlight breaks from the force of the impact but does nothing to impede her. That way we can see first-hand that no, you can’t just fight back because she's much stronger than you. Also, Finley. The sea serpent's name is Finley.

I'd argue that the blood isn't really all the noticeable unless you're looking for it. Also "Pry through a metal door" at 5:38 the doors were already opening up. Maybe if she was the one opening the doors from the beginning, I'd agree, but not so much. "At least with the blood, you can argue that it could be Mollie's and not her victims', but she's still strong enough to force a metal door open" Again, the door was already opening, we see this at 5:38 in my video - She wasn't the one to open it from the start, it was being automatically opened.

Hey Kamen, I have a question. Have you play Capcom’s game, *Haunting Grounds?* I never played Haunting Grounds I discovered the game from Capcom wiki(I was trying to make a roster new Capcom characters for Marvel vs Capcom 4. The real one, not infinite) I discovered one of the villains from Haunting Grounds, Daniella. You think she good enough for MvC? Then I watched reviews on Haunting Grounds with get spoiled. Most of the reviews say Haunting Grounds is an underrated masterpiece. I wish I can play the game but it is not on Steam and not in modern consoles. That sucks. So Haunting Grounds is one the game I want to get a remake.

I think it's the current socio-political climate to be honest. The thing someone has to understand is that horror is by definition taking people out of their comfort zone. Some people are not wired for that, or only a little. A lot of people on the other hand tend to enjoy this, oftentimes appreciating such thrills retroactively. What's more once someone becomes used to a given thing it takes more intense stimulation to achieve the same effect. There are all kinds of variations but if you've ever studied psychology beyond the introductory level where the subject can come up you will rapidly learn someone saying "the gore and ultra violence isn't scary, it's just gross" is actually getting the desired effect, they just aren't enjoying it. Some people become so averse to fear reactions and discomfort that they seek to destroy such things. Today, you have to realize that the socio-political climate has made it so the worst thing in the world is now supposed to be making someone else uncomfortable or offending them. This is a climate where things like horror and comedy by definition can't really thrive, and both have been targets for oppressive cultural regime like the one we're in now, and such things have come from both sides of the political spectrum. This is why you generally aren't seeing much successful horror, and the re-cycled tropes of things like old creepypastas or mascot horror, because those things are inoffensive, or get a sort of pass by the current socio-political regime due to their origins. The attempts to do something like this fail because the only groups they can make uncomfortable, are typically combined with political insanity that simply fails because nobody except whack jobs can rally associate it because the things being shown are so old and out of place that they don't work, or don't have the grain of truth that would cause people to be uncomfortable. This is a big part of why things like Jordan Peele movies get critical praise, and some attention to being close to the only game in town, but overall only made like 650 million between the three he's known for, and none are likely to have any kind of lasting impact where they will have followings and iconic stuff like the horror films of the 80s and especially the 90s which were more of a creative wild less due to no real political dominance by either side. We likely won't see any really good horror again until such an era returns. I will also say that there are new ideas, it's just that corporations, and of course the political establishment, don't tend to like actual creatives who simply aren't dressing up what they want. Fresh stuff appears periodically, it just gets knocked off constantly afterwards, and it is fair to point it out when that happens. I doubt many people have read this far, but without getting too creative, I'll toss out an idea to make a certain point. People have been trying to convince me to take a hand at writing again and I've been resistant for a lot of reasons (other than writing essays like this which no on will read). I could poop out a horror concept that would make people uncomfortable on all kinds of levels just by recycling a bunch of ideas from other stuff, and I imagine it would be successful. That said three guesses why no one would let this ever be made: Envision this, we do a story set in WW II about Hitler's occult warfare division, and toss in a bunch of "magic box" theory stuff that implies Hitler might have been right about a lot of his crazy ideas. A group of Kabbalistic mystics are doing occult rituals that had been going on for a long time (tied to Jewish "Blood Libel") and are working with the allies to raise mystical forces to prevent Hitler from winning. This forces The Nazis to send it's military and occult resources to deal with this problem, using various historical battles as a backdrop and explaining that things might have happened for reasons not exactly revealed properly in history for obvious reasons. The idea here isn't to make the Nazis the good guys, rather you do make them butt heads themselves, doing the ever popular "everything is dark and twisted" trope of modern fantasy, with only a few individuals on either side being above that, and those are the people who eventually work together to prevent the world from ending. The allies cover all this up, leaving all those "mysteries of WW II" you hear about and thus also setting up sequels about things connected to the overall threat, set later on down the time line. The very idea of portraying some people on the traditional bad guy's side as not being all bad, without them switching sides, or adding any kind of legitimacy to that point makes people uncomfortable, which is the point. It would get people to question a lot of things as well, even if it's all made up and quite honest about that. I used this simply for a reason, I'm not an actual Nazi fanboy. It's because decades ago "Naz-spoitation" was a thing, leading to multiple "Ilsa She-Wolf Of The SS" movies including an aborted one where she was going to apparently fight Bruce Lee in The Bermuda Triangle (I'm not kidding, he died before this was made, but if you look it up, it's actually true, and one of the reasons I even suggested this). You might also have heard of an old book called "The Keep" that was the basis for a not so good movie by the same name... in part because it miseda lot of the point, and the book also used HP Lovecraft's mythology in it. The point is, this stuff worked, or was attempted, because it was good at getting a rise out of people, which especially in the context of horror (most Ilsa movies were just sexploitation schlock, but they did have vague Saw-like elements before Saw was a thing). What I suggest to be honest simply seems new and shocking because people are afraid to do stuff like that now, and people are likely getting their panties in a twist just reading it... yet it was done before. So with like zero creativity and a bit of a budget you could say have Jason Satham play a Royal Marine commando teaming up with Scarjo in a Nazi outfit to save the world from Cthulhu or something and probably seem more creative at the moment than 99% of the stuff produced just by not giving a crap and remembering your job in doing this stuff is specifically to be edgy.

I don't love horror I'm fascinated by it A good lesson i've learned about good horror is not a love of horror but a fear of being scared both the director of RE4 and 7 have been on record saying they didn't like being scared and yet both games ended up amazing, an one of the best horror directors Sam Raimi also said he hated being scared You can't make something without a fundamental understanding of what it is, especially fear much like the debate around art, I think fear is something lacking in horror nowadays, instead its been commercialized because its "cool" to most modern gamers, and also the need for money Indie horror has been infected by this problem the most but understandibly and the game that made it popular in the first place understood this in a way its later games didnt FNAF original designs were a weird creepy perfect concoction made by the creator taking to heart that his designs were creepy, the creator needed money but he didnt fall into the same trap most in the genre do and think it was his despiration that helped I think a fear of not succeeding is lacking in all of gaming and entertain, the assumption you'll just have an audience in a way cripples these games before they even come out because instead of finding an audience, the same way kids are at their best under pressure game devs to me were a lot betting a making good things when they weren't thinking about all the money they can make
