This was a good episode. My favorite part was Fry telling Merton he was the one wasting time when he was complaining. He moans about quiz stuff he doesn't like all the time, and it's usually funny, but it was great to see someone do the equivalent of telling him to shut up. Now that's a presenter who has given lectures.

French viewer here. Don't really care if small details about Napoleon are portrayed inaccurately. However, the man was a narcissistic tyrant who left hundreds of thousand dead and millions destitute in his wake. That should be portrayed accurately. Thanks for the upload! Millions, which is even more reason why he should be portrayed accurately.
@kerlyenai7 ай бұрын
@@zigisamblak Yes true, but what I meant is that petty details are not what's important (and France's right wing press seem to be focusing on that). Of course, he should be portrayed as the ruthless tyrant he was.
@martavdz49727 ай бұрын
Wow, thank you for this opinion! I read a history of an aristocratic family in what´s today Latvia, and for 20 years there, Napoleon was their biggest fear. The city of Riga ordered mass evacuation when they saw a cloud of dust approaching. Turned out it was a herd of goats. Just tells you how terrified they were of him, even thousands of kilometres from France. On the other hand, I live close to where the battle of Austerlitz took place (now Slavkov, Czechia) and there are wonderful people, descendants of the French soldiers wounded there, and great international events every year. So every cloud has a silver lining and Napoleon sort of contributed to the interconnection of Europe...

Honestly I mean it's not a bloody documentary, it's a feature film, when has a feature film about a historical event ever not been full of inaccuracies and inconsistencies? It's not reference material it's freakin entertainment, if you want historic accuracy read a biography not a Ridley Scott blockbuster. As someone who works in technology, don't cry to me about inaccuracies in entertainment media, sheesh.

A 'morning smoke'? Are you a time traveller from the Victorian era? After your smoke, will you receive a cousin in the drawing room, and together, go for a 'constitutional ( a brisk long walk, for those unfamiliar with this era), to cathartically cough up the phlegm, as your doctor prescribed? It's just a long time since anyone I know has used that phrase, or smoked, if ever. To me, 'morning smoke' sounds like a phrase of a by-gone era.

10:47 "So to balance out a centrist politician you have to get a right wing headbanger in" is essentially the problem with modern democracy. The centre has shifted so far to the right that the moderate left seem extreme. Here in Spain the 'socialist communist bolshevique" government which is a coalition between the traditional socialists (labour) and the 'radical' left wing podemos, having formed government because they have the support from the democratically elected representatives of the people have been passing legislation, within the rules of the system, to try and raise the minimum wage at least to the poverty line, and protect women from abuse and murder, and so on; meanwhile they are equated with the extreme right (who are NOT fascists, they say), which is vox associated with PP (PP like tories) and their followers have been involved in recent years in throwing Molotov cocktails at immigrant youth centres, have called for civil war, have called for the police not to do their jobs when protecting the government from violent demonstrations, have supported a petition on a US page asking for the US government to invade Spain and topple the government. Anybody who doesn't think that within our democracies the right wing is more dangerous than the left, is crazy.
