Hi guys. The cat looks like a Sailcraft 39' Cherokee catamaran set up as a Ketch. The Sailcraft Catamarans are older British catamarans, designed and built in the 1970s to1980s. They were built thickly to be tough, as the idea in those days was you couldn't have a thin, light weight fiberglass boat of that size. These cats are built like tanks, heavy for their size compared to modern designs. You won't be winning any races in that cat! The Sailcraft cats built in the late 70's were the better boats than the earlier ones as the company had learned from earlier mistakes over the years in fabrication and design. Founded by Reg White MBE, along with designer Rodney March and they first began building high performance sailing dinghies. A partnership was formed with designer Rod Macalpine-Downie and they designed a series of fiberglass cruising catamarans. The Apache, Comanche, Cherokee and Navaho cats. These cats are great for couples or singlehanded sailing, but the Ketch rig is a little more complicated and not as user friendly as a sloop rig, but once you know what to do, the Ketch rig has it's advantages over a sloop rig. As any seasoned sailor will tell you, it all comes down to personal preference. You can sail ANY boat, with ANY rig, ANY number of hulls, but you ENJOY sailing YOUR type of boat. Experience is needed of course, to know WHICH type is YOUR type. The Cherokee is known for problems with the hydraulic steering system. When it works it's fine, but when they fail.... you have NO steerage at all! Most have replaced to whole system including the engine with two engines in their place. An expensive fix, but if one engine fails you have a backup. It will motor fine on one out of two engines. The other option is setting up cable steering to replace the hydraulics. Probably the option you would need to go with. That cat also needs a bimini cover or hard top added. Long passages in the sun or bad weather will not be pleasant without one. The up side is that those cats have more room in them than is apparent given their size and have great fulltime liveaboard qualities for a couple and you don't always have to stay in marinas. Staying at anchor in a cat is generally more comfortable than in a monohull given the same anchorage and conditions. Those Sailcraft cats have a great reputation among liveaboard couples. You also have the choice of ripping out whatever you don't want of the original interior and make it how YOU want. There are plenty of people on KZbin that have done just that and on a limited budget. I wanted to buy a 35' Cherokee 8 years ago in Rebak Marina, Langkawi, Malaysia. It was a deceased estate, but I was too late and an Australian couple bought it first. It would have been a BIG restoration job in an out of the way place to refurbish an old boat. I was up for the challenge but missed out on the deal. The late Canadian disgraced former Doctor who had owned it made sure the important parts were looked after. They were either in great condition or top quality and new, but the rest of the boat was a mess. The mast step needed replacing too due to rust. Almost all comments I have read here simply state stay away from a cat. Money pit. Doesn't sail well. Extra mooring fees. Twice the hulls, twice the cost. All fair comments, but if you think you're up for the time, cost and HARDSHIP... go for it... but ONLY after a survey. As everyone says, it WILL take MUCH longer than you think to restore and COST way more than you think. If you don't get a survey you are buying blind and an old cat like that WILL have hidden issues... just as ANY boat... Monohull or cat. Due to Covid-19 and it's affect on the world at the moment, you may just have the extra time you'll need to restore it forced upon you. I'm a sailor at heart, but could only find work on power boats as a Deckhand and then as a Coxswain on the Australian East and South coasts. It's hard to find fulltime paid positions on sailboats in Australia. I've owned a handful of boats, both cats and monohulls. In my opinion I would look into buying the Cherokee. Anything bigger is a bit harder for singlehanded or coupled sailing. It's WAY cheaper the the 35' cat I tried to buy and I'm very jealous of your opportunity of buying it. If I was able to be in that part of the world and had the time and funds, I would seriously look into it... but that's just ME :) In the end of course, it is YOUR choice and I'm sure you'll do what YOU both think best regardless of the opinions of the internet and masses of armchair wannabe sailors. EDIT: I mixed up the info about the steering issue in my first post... that was for a different make of cat... it should of only been about the hydraulic propulsion issue, not the steering... my bad :/ I hope this clears that up. Here is some other info I found when I was researching years ago on that Cherokee 35'. Very similar design to the 39' and they share some issues. The 35' has a different internal design layout to the 39'. Many of these boats (Salicraft) had twin hydraulic drives (propeller units) powered by a single engine in the cockpit. At the period these were built, it was a clever way to save weight and expense. However, the test of time has not been kind to the system, and one by one they are being replaced with either outboards or twin sail drivers. It has skeg-hung, transom-mounted rudders of incredible strength. The skegs go all the way through the hull to the top deck for support. This skeg-hung rudder set up protects the rudders from forward collisions. The early models of the Cherokee had a single, pivoting centreboard, hoisted from a shin-smashing winch in the cockpit. This arrangement proved a chronic headache and was replaced by low aspect ratio keels on most of the boats and all the later models. Beaching the Cherokee is not a drama with the low keels. There are a couple of problems endemic to all of the Sailcraft boats. The windows are chronic leakers, and if you leave them open, two things likely will happen. One, you'll crack your shins on the windows, and secondly, you may tear the windows off with the jib sheets. However, many of these boats have been retrofit with fixed acrylic ports. There is one problem that owners should be aware of relative to the double spreader rig. This rig has a pair of check stays running to the lower spreaders. The check stays are not meant to carry any load while sailing, just to limit the forward bend or dampen pumping. Overtightening these stays will literally tear the boat apart. Another thing to look for is corrosion in the forward crossbeam. The deck and cockpit layout is not particularly handy, nor are the sheeting arrangements and redesigning them, particularly for singlehanded use, is advised. Because of the stair-step arrangement of the deck, clambering around at sea is difficult as there are no handholds or balancing points. So adding handholds or grabrails would be a good idea. It has sufficient hull volume to carry an enormous load without destroying its performance. It sails better than you would expect a boat of this size to sail. The boat is solid fiberglass with a balsa-cored deck structure. Some boats have suffered from serious rot and needed extensive rebuilding. Get a good surveyor to go over it carefully. Also, not all of the bulkheads are fully tabbed into the structure, which was a weakness corrected in later models. I hope this helps :)

I sailed the smaller version of the catamaran, an Iroquois, from Florida to the Caribbean, did a bunch of fixing and island hopping. It sailed well, costs of repairs was not much different from a monohull. They generally sail faster. The wave motion is different, but many times it was smoother and not on such an angle all day. I sold it after some years for what I had paid for it. If I was anywhere close I would be bidding on it!

I heard you bought the cat. I have a fixer upper trimaran myself. Last week my wife said "Yes, that boat has given you so much already, in the way of opportunities for building and fixing things". I'd never thought of it that way in such succinct words before, but she's right. I love the opportunities I now have to fix the boat up and make her mine. Nothing like a load of blood, sweat and tears for deep bonding! I hope you both end up enjoying this enormous adventure and can look back with pride on what you created out of this goldmine of opportunities!

Best advice I can depart with is ALWAYS buy a big as you can afford. There's no point to buy a 32' boot to fix it end then realizing you need or want more room! Plus remember one only sails 10% to 15% of the time, the remaining times on anchor so then cats give more living space and space for guests, patrons and maybe a work space in on cabin? More resale value too! Best of luck.

I know this is an older one but I find it interesting how different circumstances affect needs. Our family (4 of us all adult size) are buying a boat that is just under 30 feet long because it is palatial compared to the 22 foot boat we have been in for the past number of years. Of course we only spend weeks at a time not full time. Just not having to put the bed away so we have a table is wonderfull. ;)

Your next boat depends a lot on what you want to do. If you see yourselves staying in the Med and cruising there for the foreseeable, a cat could be a good choice (of course, the mooring fees are more, but from what you showed us they are still less than for a monohull in Falmouth). If you're looking for something to take you around the world, it might be worth continuing to search and finding an older, solid monohull. You probably already know them, but if you don't we'd really recommend the Sailing Kittiwake channel. They started with a cat, then bought a monohull to cross the Atlantic. They have a lot of very useful things to say when comparing these different types of boat. Whichever way you go, we wish you the best of luck and can't wait to see the next stage of your adventures.

If the contest is in good condition would be first choice. The bene would be a consideration also. It is all about compromises. Spend more to get a better boat or go cheap and everything that entails. Keep in mind all future work. Any boat that requires a lot of work will be more work than you expect. Get a boat that is ready to sail. It will be enough work just to keep it running.

Kids, get a cat if you want one, they're awesome, just make sure the structure, rigging and engine are sound. Can't say by the video if this is the one (I kinda think not). You don't need too big if it's a cat. 32/36 feet would be plenty of boat for you and not much more marina or other expenses. Don't worry about interior work, it's fun if you got the love, and you guys have loads of it. Just take your time to choose. But I hope you get a cat. (outboard engines are less trouble in the long run) Find a 36ft/10m cat with a good base and you will have the best of both worlds. Love you guys.

The cat looks roomy, but needs a lot of work. I personally think the Arabesque is a very interesting schooner with even more room than the cat! And so much light coming in with all of those windows! It looks very warm and comfortable like a home. I vote to survey it closer, checking for seaworthiness, and negotiate a good price. But if you go for the cat, you'll still get my support and many others too. Best of luck on your search, and I can't wait until your boat FINDS YOU!

If you are tempted to buy a catamaran of any kind, l would suggest that you arrange a sail on one or two, because in my HO. Its a totally different sailing experience. Some people love them and others don't, it's a very personal thing. I bought a Prout 37 Snow goose in Florida 20 yrs ago to sail the islands specifically with my wife in mind, she has always been a reluctant sailor, and whilst it was very spacious, and quite comfortable (apart from the slamming) I never liked sailing it. I can't really tell you why, but it lacked something for me, it just didn't give me the buzz that sailing always has. So try some first. You may love them, then again you may not. Happy Sailing.

Just my preference, good luck guys whatever you choose.

Hi guys it looks like you have got many boats around. Just don’t rush it and make calculations on that way you did it for the cat. If I had to make this choice buying a boat on a budget I will definitely look after a monohull 32-38ft from 1970 to 1990. I think is good idea to write on paper for each boat what needs to be done in order have a better overview before to take a decision. Anything can be fixed it’s just a matter of time and money. No matter what boat you choose I would suggest to sell the old engine and buy a new one like Beta marine diesel, Nanny, Sole (4-5t euro)... living aboard means that you are remaining on the engine a lot. Good luck!

Good luck on your boat hunting. I have never been on a cat in a big sea, but I imagine it isn't very comfortable. I prefer steel, but that's me because I am a welder and work with steel like a carpenter works with wood. Anyways good luck and hope to see you good people back on the water soon.

If you do sail to Vancouver, BC you better get some Charts of the area as from the University of BC to False creek there is a sand bank that comes out quite a ways which means shallow water, good place to work on the Hull of your boat when tide goes out. But best read the tides real well. You can anchor right before you go into False Creek or contact authorities as to how long you can anchor on the inside and if okay there are quite a few places to motor in and tie up save your ass Boat.

Hey here in America there’s a KZbin channel called captain Q yacht hunter. A old man that sold cals in the 60s. He’s a life full of knowledge. Check out the cal 40 1966 for 12 grand. It’s sold but if you watch his videos you will get a perspective on some boats. That cal 40 had your name all over it. Sv bohemian

Good film. Have you thought about buying a van and driving around Europe? Less risky (financially) than taking on a maritime money pit! Might have to keep the van in a boatyard till COVID barriers lift. I'm just a bit worried for you that all these project boats are going to take mega-bucks to make seaworthy.

A Pentland with a modern engine, a fairly new mainsail ,with twin keels so that you can park her on a cheap mud mooring and sloop rigged which is easier to handle than a ketch rig. Plus a wheel instead of a tiller, how good can it get!!
@gfimadcat
@gfimadcat 3 жыл бұрын
Ketch > Sloop any day of the week for ease of handling. Smaller sails so less muscling stuff around needed, and a ketch is easier to get set up for heavier weather on account of being able to fly a smidge of mizzen with a storm jib to stabilize things. In my humble opinion, anyway.

Have KZbin taken out the link to the BOATSHED Lancashire Pentland ? I did put it in a comment.. I prefer a sloop under 40 feet as the aft mast nearly always gets in the way of the cockpit or aft cabin in a 31' boat. A yawl would be better for a smaller boat, with a soft footed staysail rigged on a boomkin.

After a very long time, we decided on an aluminium hull design with a liftable keel. The reason was to sail in artic waters, being able to beach the boat and to take cover in rivers / mangrove if a tropical storm came our way. We were studying catamarans for 8 months but could not cope with the running costs and the fact it’s impossible to get one in aluminium for safe passages trough icy waters. PS: our budget is high. When we are finished exploring, we will most likely buy a catamaran and grow old in the comfortable sea-caravan that it is. We wish you the very best no matter what you chose - Happy Sailing :)

Forget about the Cat, you'll be restricted as to where you can go and the costs plus refit will break you, it's not worth your time. Offer the guy with the Beneteau 5,000, you're probably the only ones he's had come to him with any interest, wait him out and I'm pretty sure he'll settle at around $8,000 and you close it at 6,000. You're looking in a graveyard, Dr. Frankenstein... Hahaha... They're all paying money to leave them there, it's not a seller's market, you have leverage in the fact that they're out of pocket every month if they leave their boats there on the hard, it's not free.

Everything changed. But I also think you guys should not buy the cat- thats a Design from 70s that gave Cats a bad rep. Just my opinion 🤔☺🤔
