ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZbin and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

I hope you get your injury tended. You don’t need a sepsis! Personally I make my own colloidal silver and take that to stave off infections…it works much like an antibiotic without so many side effects. Also pure essential oils are anti microbial, and anti- inflammatory. Gotta get the good kind though, not fragrance oil, but pure therapeutic grade essential oil. Lavender and frankincense are great for skin injuries. Peppermint is cheap and good for burns. Anyway,,.take care of yourself! Tough start to lambing looks like! Sorry about losing the ewes..it did seem she was ruptured. It happens. Beautiful to see your family together. Jock is getting cuter all the time, and now his little brother joining the fun! It’ll sure be nice to get some warm spring weather!

Soak that hand with epsom salt, good drawing agent, not good for bacteria...and once it feels a bit better, a tiny drop of superglue (or just polish the nail) will close it right up.

Lol..Lizzy read my comment. My daughter had the issue and a client showed me it's a standard practice in their culture. It worked..her nose has a nice shape because the cartilage is pliable when young. It's a gentle pinch at bridge sliding all the way down. It became a game when little. 2 x day.. If it actually broke and didn't form that way, check with doc first. Sinus can be concern long term as grows.. Mine giggled and said go for it.

I am totally amazed at how you know so much about your sheep and when to help and when to step back. The loss of the little ones is only softened by the saving/regular birth of all the new wee ones. I've seen that fluid problem in a baby, in humans it's called Prune belly, once the kidneys start making urine, and there's an issue with with urine exiting the bladder, the urine builds up, compresses the internal organs 😪 poor little thing.

Wash and soak the punctured finger in yarrow tea and then bandage. Yarrow tea is best for soaking, but if you don't have that, soak in warm water with a bar of hyperallergenic soap--cheap unscented soap bar works. We always used Ivory in the state. Maybe try to keep a glove on.

My husband and I have to roll the round bales by hand. I feel your pain. BUT it is nowhere near as painful as your poor finger. You had better take the time to look after yourself. Epsom salts soak that hand at the end of the day. Every day. At this point you may need antibiotics. No more self surgery for you! Have learned so much from these lovely videos. Thank you so much!

Hi Cammie, very interesting to see the same things happening to you as to me over here in NZ! I had an ewe with a prolapse which I had to lamb and she tore and didn't make it. Also had a lovely 2th ewe with a huge single fluid filled lamb coming backwards which neither I nor the vet could get out and she had to be put down. As you say, that's farming, but it's the hardest part. Love your videos - you and Lizzie are a formidable team ❤️

I used a tiny drill bit to go through my nail to release the pressure,followed up with 3% peroxide 4 times a day and extra probiotics to keep the infection away , to be fair I wasn't adding sheep fluids to it .

Superglue! Clean that fingernail thoroughly, sand it a little, one more clean with isopropyl alcohol & then cover it with superglue or nail polish real thick. That'll stay on while you lamb and wash and keep infection out.

If that finger don’t get any better you’re just going to have to find the time somehow to go to the doctor to get that checked because you’ll probably need an antibiotic. Also do yourself a favour and wear a glove on that hand, you just opened a hole in your fingernail then proceeded to do stuff with that fingernail exposed to a lot of bacteria. If it wasn’t infected before it soon will be.

@@grassfolk Typically, a shepherd wants to help lamb and ewe bond and recognize each other for the first 24-36 hours. The lamb needs to get its first colostrum in under 6 hours (I think that’s right) to grow up healthy.

You can improve your long gloves fit by putting on a regular glove. They have more later to keep their shape and hug the hand of the long glove to your hand. You get the sleeve protection from the long glove with the improved feeling and grip of the other.

Also, get your hand seen to lad, my great-grandfather worked on the shipyards and had his finger hit with a hammer, this was pre NHS, and he died from sepsis in his 40's, from something that is now entirely preventable. It'll probably be fine, and I know it's mad with lambing, but you're no good to anyone if your arm falls off ;-)

That's not waterbelly, Cammy. It's likely a congenital anomaly/birth defect, that has interfered with the lamb's ability to regulate fluid in it's body, thus the buildup.

Hello Cammy, if you start a go fund me page maybe you could have a tractor by summer. Talk to the hoof GP that’s how he got his second crush. It is interesting to watch you lamb, and watch Sandi lamb. I hope your hand feels better, before you go to bed at night, soak it in the warmest you can stand in an awful lot of salt. That always took care of the damage I got on my hands and fingers from being a printer the high salt level will help draw any infection out, the hot water will let it really work well. Then if you take some bag balm and rub your hands with it right before bed, you’ll see the difference the next day like I said it worked for me for 15 years.

Never ever put a hole in your nail. That let infection in. While at the doctor, check to see that your Tetanus vaccine is up to date. Great video. Those boys ❤️❤️

My grandfather used a nail heated red hot. I guess it was to sterilize it and to cauterize the whole. But... OUCH!

My son smashed his nail like that when he was little. A red-hot needle to let out the blood & the pressure, and he was good to go! No infection!

We have seen those water bellies a few times, we just call them that: water belly. I don't know what causes them exactly. One thing I do is rub some lamb "juice" on the ewe's nose to get them to start licking.

Hot Epson Salts soak and wrap the finger in triple antibiotic cream at night. Will do wonders.

My recommendation for the fingernail is to keep it covered(paper towel and duck tape works well) and to disinfect it. Tea tree oil works well if you don't want to go to the doctor. Great video, thanks for showing the little jobs as well as the big ones.

Veterinary student here. With regards to the lambs being a bit large, 2/3 of their weight is gained in about the last 6 weeks of pregnancy, so it's not advised to increase the ewe feed during that phase, especially not grain. Although it sounds like you already know what went wrong there. Question: did you do a post mortem on or get a veterinarian's opinion on the lamb with fluid in the abdomen?

Theyre really easy to do...just whack out a rectangle the length and width of an average lamb and cut two slits for the front legs...4, if you want to anchor all 4 corners.;)

You might need to drill that nail again, if it's still so painful there might still be pressure behind. But then seal it with nail polish

Meg is the quarter horse of the sheep business. She was cutting after that sheep was great. Thanks for sharing all the the aspects of the sheep game !
