I think there are a lot of similarities here with Isaiah thomas on the Boston Celtics. Two guys who grinded away on bad teams for a bit. And once they fully entered their prime and got their recognition they were both in their mid to late 20’s so not “unlimited” time left in the tank. Both had hip injuries that effectively derailed their careers seemingly instantaneously. Both hip injuries severity was seemingly underplayed to most parties until it was to late.

A lot of Galloday's problem in New York is that after the hip injury, the giants just didn't know how to use him. Davonte Parker on the Patriots is very similar. He doesn't get separation (literally the bottom of the league ever since that 2019 season where it was Galloday) but has an uncanny ability to make contested catches. A player like that just CANT be your #1 receiver. It literally won't work no matter how hard you try. You have to use him as that kind of big-body slot receiver that is a safety blanket after the deep balls are taken out of the play. But just like the Patriots with Parker, Joe Judge and the Giants just tried to jam a square peg into a round hole because of that massive contract and by the time someone smart enough to see the problem like Daboll came along, it was too late
@maxmingo7392 Жыл бұрын
I don’t know if the stats would back me up but I bet Marvin Jones was used more as the lions primary read receiver
@QwertyCaesar Жыл бұрын
He also had an issue with Daboll's philosophy. He's heavily emphasized that nobody is given anything, that everything is earned. He meant it too, as even a rookie UDFA, Tomon Fox, made the team where vets got cut. If not for the fact that there would've been that enormous dead cap hit that would've put the team $10M over the cap if they cut him he wouldn't have even made the team. Golladay's "I should be playing regardless" comment really highlights how opposed they were. Golladay was never outright hostile and he was a good soldier who followed orders but there was clearly never any buy-in and even as a fan you could see that it was messing with his head. Add into that New York media and it's a tough situation. That said I remember during the 2022 season multiple commentators who are directly associated with the Giants even suggest that Golladay should meet with the team psychologist. I don't think anyone would say that unless they knew something we don't. I remember Nate Solder also getting a huge contract from Dave Gettleman and playing like shit - his son was battling cancer. I think there's something more to it that we won't know for decades if ever.
@JKilla909 Жыл бұрын
@@QwertyCaesarvery well said. Daboll really meant it when he said you gotta earn your playing time, whereas Golladay felt like he already earned it. and then by the time we were 7-2, Daboll realized we don’t need this guy w a bad attitude.

Aa lifelong Lions fan, I can 100% attest: none of the characterizations of his play w/ Detroit were exaggerated here. He was just money in the f#¢king bank when he played for us, & all for the price of a 3rd RD rookie contract (out of a tiny school, no less. Northern Illinois, i think). But yeah man, a ton of Lions fans--including myself at the time--were crazy pissed when his contract extension fell through (but obviously, it proved to be a genius move. I have my suspicions the Lions med. staff had serious doubts about his future even way back then, by knowing the real severity of that persistent hip injury). But i did feel bad for him AND for the Giants w/ how that all worked out. Cause he was an absolute monster for us when he was healthy. We loved him in Detroit for those 4 yrs. He just wasnt long for being a top receiver in The League. It happens. And NY were the ones left holdin the bag for it this time. Lions fans know what that feels like, believe me. All the spashy free agent signings over my lifetime that just never panned out,& yer stuck paying out all this dough, thats also counting against the cap, for basically nothing. Good god, my stomach hurts just thinkin about it. It's one of the many big reasons that havin a good team at the moment is so damn sweet for us now.

Then seeing him run routes, digs, curls and deep shots and literally get ZERO separation almost every time was mind boggling. He kept saying he "wants" the ball... but no QB is going to keep throwing you the ball when your blanketed so well week after week that anything coming near your zip code is going to be either deflected, knocked down or intercepted. It just looked like he got paid and was like "Nah, I'm good". Seeing the half hearted effort in training camp and the total lackadaisical showing in Week 1 of the TItans game pretty much sealed his fate.
