Having Afternoon English Style High Tea at the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, China (香港半島酒店). I think of Ace Venture when I hear this song. We ended up having to wait two hours to get a table here in the Tea Salon. Initially they told us it would only be a one hour wait but by the time one hour had passed we had waited so long that we figured it was probably worth it to stay and now Sam is not very pleased. He's looking at me with evil eyes.

Are you freaking kidding me. Sam is hiding behind the camera because he's so angry that he had to wait for two hours. That now I'm being punished by having to be on camera all alone.
Okay, so if your'e looking to go afternoon tea in Hong Kong. The Peninsula is the place to come. This is the oldest hotel in all of Hong Kong and it's super popular. The lineups really speak for themselves.
Mmmm, so I got my self a nice little tea cup of mango tea. And it smells like fresh mangoes. So good. Mmmm, tropical.
We've already dug into the food. We couldn't help it. If you go to the bottom here we have the scones which we can eat with the clotted cream and jam. Over here we have some nice finger sandwiches with salmon, cucumber and up top we have the cakes and the macaroons and lots of other treats.
So here I'm preparing my scones with clotted cream and jam. This is a favorite of mine. Whenever I go to London to visit my friend Rebecca I always end up staying at her house and I eat scones with clotted cream and jam three times a day. I eat it for breakfast, for lunch and also for my late night snack. So I always get fat when I go over there.
The food was amazing. I think it was definitely worth the two hour wait. Although, I would have preferred not having to wait that long. Some favorites were the little lemon meringue tarts in a chocolate shell. Plus I really liked the scones with the clotted cream. Then they had sandwiches with salmon that were amazing. So I'm a happy girl. So I think it's kind of funny that we had to wait two hours in line but it only took us 30 minutes to finish off all of the food in front of us. That doesn't make sense.

An Historical Landmark. Opened in 1928, & was the first under The Peninsula brand "the finest hotel east of Suez". Charlie Chaplin & Paulette Goddard, who were Hollywood stars of the 1930s classic Modern Times, were the guests of the hotel Peninsula. In 1941, On third floor of the Peninsula Hotel Sir Mark Aitchison Young (1886-1974), surrendered in person the British Crown colony of Hong Kong to the Empire of Japan on 25 December 1941.The surrender occurred after 18 days of fierce fighting against the overwhelming Japanese forces that had invaded the territory.The Governor was confined for two months in one of the hotel suites before being transferred to a prison in Shanghai. The resort was then renamed "Tōa Hotel" (東亜ホテル, "East Asia Hotel"), & the rooms were reserved for Japanese officers & high-ranking dignitaries, while Hong Kong sank into misery & destitution. Hong Kong was handed over by the Imperial Japanese Army to the Royal Navy on 30 August 1945 & Vice Admiral Ruitako Fujita signing the Japanese Surrender of Hong Kong, 15 September 1945 at Government House, Hong Kong, senior Japanese officers surrender the territory to British officers led by Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser, 1st Baron Fraser of North Cape.

I had high tea at the Peninsula in 1995 ,2 years before the takeover. There was not much of a wait at the time. The Peninsula is a landmark, an institution that's part of the psyche of Hong Kong, it's a tradition and an experience to have high tea in the Peninsula. There might be better or less expensive places, but it's not the Peninsula ! Besides , I still remember when they first put up the traditional door gods on the front doors in the late 50's early 60's , And then those huge traditional Chinese stone lions flanking the front entrance. Plus the Rolls-Royces . There might be better value elsewhere, but in Hong Kong? Nothing beats the Peninsula.

It really is an iconic building and experience worth having in Hong Kong. Even if you have to wait although I do wish you could somehow make a reservation ;)

Aaaaah, forgot to do that again. It ended up being over 600 HK dollars after tax. It was a fun experience but definitely outside of our normal travel budget.

High Tea is a Meal with Meat and Potatoes. Usually for the working class. AFTERNOON TEA IS WHAT YOU ARE HAVING. Americans trying to sound fancy. Posh and balderdash.

Considering they're using the strainer, probably not. I work in one of the oldest and most popular tea shops in my city/province, which provides the tea for high tea at the super fancy/old hotel that all the tourists stay at. We provide them with loose leaf (and sell loose leaf), but when people want to save money, they come to the cafe part of the tea shop they get tea bags (and scones with clotted cream and jam for way less).

As an English person, the words high tea doesn’t exist. Also when you said prosciutto at one point, my heart nearly broke. The tea should be black tea with a tiny amount of milk. If it is a bone China cup, the milk goes in first. Sandwich in high end restaurants are usually either smoked salmon,or thinly sliced cucumber or ham. Sometimes cream cheese with cucumber.

Yeah it was a little bit expensive but our room wasn't in front of the Hong Kong island, so it was a little bit cheaper! I'd like to go back to Hong Kong, it's a fantastic and modern city! :)

Done that and I agree will not do it again but I prefer the midnight buffet at the I-Hotel on a Friday night it was excellent free flow of beer, wine, juice and fizzy pop

Peninsula's hitea is definitely overrated considering the inhumanely long lining up. There are many other places in Hong Kong that offer excellent hi-tea without the hassle of staying in a line for 2 hrs : Repulse Bay Hotel, Incontinental Hotel (Ex-Regent), Shatin Hyatt Regency to name a few.

Oh, thank you for some great alternative suggestions for tea! I certainly agree with you that it is overrated :) I don't think I'd be willing to wait in line for 2 hours for many things and I would never go through that experience again.

What time did you guys go? I cant remember the day exactly but a few years ago I went around 1pm to prepare to line up for 2, I had no problem getting a seat.

The food does not look pretty in terms if presentation. It looks disorganized. Hopefully the taste is worth the wait because I have seen better fruit tarts and pastries at bakery shops:-)
