because the best part of DnD or table top rpgs in general is having a character you've made (which almost always will have a very real part of you in them) have the chance to grow and change, and if the DM is good enough and the moment feels poignant enough, to then have the DM state that your character now has a stat or ability change because of that interaction, then it becomes actually real because it'll affect the game as well. DnD is unofficial therapy for probably too many people, but well handled moments like this by an improv master like BLM can mean so much for more than just the person experiencing the moment.

On the flip side, many times simple character flaws are justified by saying that you just have a medical condition. @@davidtucker9498 This just sounds like you want to retain your ability to judge people based on deficiencies you think should be in their power to control. If someone has executive dysfunction - regardless if they're able to get an official diagnosis or not - it does not make them lazy. If someone has an addiction they are not failing as a person to not deal with that. Sometimes you can't "deal with it". Sometimes "dealing with it" is just living with it, and you don't really possess the right to moralize people on if they should be on meds or not. Sure, you can be a horrible person and have a mental illness, and you can be horrible because of an untreated mental illness, but I feel like that's not what you're talking about. You're not talking about someone who chooses not to take their bipolar meds and go on a racist rant. You're saying that people with mental illnesses will use their diagnosis as a get out of jail free card for bad behavior, or as an excuse to not improve at certain things like organizing, discipline, showing up on time, being more sociable, proper etiquette stuff, and that's just so far from reality I don't think you've even as much as met a person who was open about their mental illness to you. We all need to work on our character flaws as you said, and having ableist biases where you assume broad strokes trends being applicable to the vast group of people with mental illnesses is also a character flaw.

Jawbone’s way of helping here is a great guide if you want to help friends. Bring up mental health and ask directly. Hug them. Help them focus on the current moment instead of fear, and maybe ramble a bit so they’re thinking about something other than anxieties. Make sure they know it’s just bad brain chemicals, and it’s not who they are. Give them a short term goal so they have something to get them through that day, and make sure they follow through. Assure them that the long term is going to be okay too, and make sure they know you’ll be there for them then.

I’m a writer for stage, and I often get bogged down on how to most perfectly and elegantly express some feeling in dialogue. This series really reminds me that often times simple and straight forward speech is the best way to go. “It’s really bad.” “My parents just left and I don’t know where they are.” On paper, these would look like a place holder, bracketed, subtext line to be replaced later by something much more flowery. Trust your actors. Let them sell it. In reality, people in crisis really do just say what they mean. And when in the hands of a talented performer, a simple line can deliver everything it needs to.

I’ve watched this clip probably like 28 times and it hits so hard every time. Jawbone has gotten me through at least 3 depressive episodes and is the reason I’m going back to therapy. Thank you Brennan, Siobhan, Ally, and everyone else involved in making this show for doing such an incredible job of handling hard but important topics. Mental health and LGBT+ topics are still kind of taboo and yet they affect many teens around the world. It’s great to see it incorporated so seamlessly into content because it truly helps normalize it. I love you all ❤️❤️❤️

Knowing a youngin' who has panic attacks, autism-induced or no, makes watching Siobahn here hurt because she does such a good job with her wardrobe, makeup, and acting chops, that she really looks like a teenager trying their best not to break down.

This might be my favourite emotional moment of the whole season - I don't have anxiety, but I do have ADHD, and I'll often beat myself up for being lazy or stupid, even though I know it isn't as simple as that. Hearing Jawbone say 'you're not X, you're sick, you just need medicine' really got to me, and I'm sure many people with mental illnesses can relate to that feeling of blaming themselves for an error in their brain chemistry.

Just another reminder that anxiety is real, it's extremely real to all the people who believe there is something wrong with them because they have anxiety or get panic attacks. when someone gets a panic attack or anxiety attack it's scary, and we know it's just in our heads but saying that doesn't help, what we need is someone like jawbone to look us in the eye and tell us we are fine, there is nothing wrong with us and that it is not your fault.

Now years latter I help run a organization online that helps kids with mental illness and in terrible living situations, and now this whole scene hits me like a freight train. Not anxiety or panic attacks, but I've had adhd all my life. I was different, but my parents never really saw that I had it. I've only recently gotten my diagnosis, and even more recently gotten my medication. Furthermore, I'd just gotten back into dnd, and therefore went to rewatch Fantasy High (I'd only gotten to episode 3 or so before), so all of that coalescing to me seeing this scene, and seeing Siobhans genuine reaction broke me. I feel seen, understood, and accepted, something I really don't get at home, like Adaine. And then add the fact that this I (mostly) improv, 10/10, amazing show, amazing people, just overall amazing.

Hey man hopefully you get through it and come out of it stronger. Theres light at the end of the tunnel man trust me. I have managed to cut down on my panic attacks tremendously only getting them once every 5 months. A huge thing that helped me was just accepting them and understanding that I will have them and channeling all of the emotions and energy I get from panic attacks into a positive outlet. What helps me in the moment of a panic attack is focusing exclusively on breathing. Close your eyes take a breath and just feel the air go into your mouth and throat and fill up your lungs. As long as you can breathe you can live and as long as your alive theres no reason to panic. Another technique that helped me was playing chicken with my panic attacks. A major symptom I used to get was shortness of breathe felt like I was choking on my tongue so when I was really struggling with a panic attack I would challenge myself id say in my head "In the next ten seconds im gonna pass out from a lack of oxygen." Then I would count to 10. After doing that I would still be conscious and breathing so obviously this uncomfortable feeling couldnt kill me and wasnt causing any damage. You got it man hopefully your family and friends are there to support you through it.

Honestly, I love how the guy with the least experience of being a guidance counselor becomes one of the greatest ever. I love how he just has all these unfortunate experiences he grew up with and had, being failed by the world constantly, and yet he was given that one opportunity by someone to get their life back on track and now he uses his experience to tell the kids that it's ok to not be ok, and that everybody is just somebody else to learn more about. What's also great about this moment is that it was Adaine who originally asked him to become the counsellor and now he's returned the favour, helping Adaine get back into the fight. Sometimes the best actors are the ones who've been through it all. Bakers know how to be bakers, and recovering addicts know what it's like to be hurt by yourself. That's why he's so cool to me, because his own experiences help him help others.

Jawbone is a great guidance counselor because he uses his own personal experience to relate to kids in trouble. At first the tragicomic denial of Gilear's counseling experience made me think he would have been better and was just being played for laughs, but Jawbone really does have a lot to offer because he's been through it. Especially here: who would know better how it feels to be judged as lesser because of a medical condition than a man with lycanthropy who couldn't afford treatment?

I love that all his characters are unabashedly themselves. If someone else had accidentally had a vagabond werewolf become a guidance counsellor there may have been a thing how, oh, they used to be very into self care and stuff but got caught up and now we see the TRUE them. But no, not Brennan, his vagabond werewolf fell into this role, and he does it with all the heart and soul he has, but he is still a vagabond who had a fucked up life, that doesn’t just disappear, and in many ways it strengthens the character because you see them grow to accept the challenge of the new role thrust upon them. Also, the underlying messaging is better, it doesn’t matter who or what you are, you can be who or what you want, but that doesn’t mean to achieve A, you must forget B, they can go together.

I was terrified for it, there's alzheimer in my family and the idea of needing psichiactic medicine made me think there might be something wrong with my head, that a was going the same route my grandparents went. When i found this clip it hitted me hard, i don't know nothing about the campaign or the story they are playing but it hits hard.
