I lived 200m from the actual centerline (not extended centerline) of 09L for several years while working on a major Heathrow airport project. All the houses in the area are triple-glazed (paid by the airport). It's not that loud and there are no (or very few) flights after 11pm until about 5:30am. I had no difficulty sleeping (but probably woke a bit earlier than I do now). It's not really a problem, some of the major hotels are pretty close too and you don't even notice the aircraft there. Anyone moving into the area shouldn't be surprised. Heathrow has been one of the busiest international airports for a very long time. I'd estimate that most of the people living very close to the approach / take-off paths are working in airport related occupations anyway.

I stayed at a hotel in Greece once. I ordered a ticket without knowing where I’d stay, those tickets are cheeper and I was thinking it’s only two weeks. Ended up at a hotel (felt like it was located in front of the runway lol) but yeah the hotel was horrible. Super simple, dirty and yuck. The only good thing was that it was near the beach and I loved sitting at the balcony looking at the belly of all these planes lol. At night you could hear the planes and it was like “oh shit that ones too close, that ones gotta hit”. Maybe because Ryanair flew there too.

Human brain’s adaptability is amazing. I lived next to a train track for a year. I got used to it quickly. A friend stayed over for one week. First night, he didn’t get any sleep due to train noises. His last night staying at that place, slept like a baby. Brain adjusted to filter out the train noise. 😀

Exactly. And for those already living there, The solution is simple. Pack up and move. What’s that? You can’t afford to move? Then tough crap, stop bitching about the noise then. Also Heathrow doesn’t operate 24 hours. Between 11pm and 4am, no flights can land or takeoff. I know what you meant but the 24/7 thing but just thought I’d mention that.

We used to live under the approach path of KPDX (Portland International). It wasn't as extreme as this but we got used to the planes. In fact, the day after 9/11, when all the flights were grounded, it was so erie and quiet I couldn't stand it after a while. I was so relieved to hear a pair of F-15s finally flying over for a few seconds. Took a while to get used to the quiet when we moved.

Here is a little tip from your uncle steve, if the noise of planes keeps you awake, do not move near an airport or flight path, if the noise of trains keeps you awake, do not move near a railyard or near train tracks, if alot of car traffic keeps you awake, do not move near an expressway or road with a high volume of car traffic, there you go captain obvious, problem solved.
