Havok-Wolverine: MELTDOWN. A weird violent experimental comic that doesn’t quite work for me.

I miss when Marvel took chances like this on books. I also read these as a teenager and even when the art wasn't my vibe they were still interesting to look through. A couple that worked better than this were the Daredevil Love and War graphic novel by Sienkevicz and Miller and the Spider-Man Hooky graphic novel by Bernie Wrightson.

I'm the same age as you. During this time, Havok and Wolverine were on the Outback X-Men team. That was the connection. I also thought this artwork was out there at the time, but at the same time, it was amazing.

This is a blindspot for me. An epic format, pricy teamup book done in radically different style than you'd see in proper X-Men and written by Simonsons, who are legends in the X-brand. You put Wolverine in the book, I suppose, basically so you can do a Havok story. Its a way to get people to buy a Havok mini-series. Sounds good to me. You don't like it for being 'weird', but what I see, I'll add it to my long list of wants, lol. This is right up my alley.

the covers, the art style, symbols on the back, even the colors of the art and covers is in the style of 60s-70s soviet union propaganda posters/art. Ive never seen them before, but now I might get a copy

haha I actually spent money on this when it came out, I was a teenager and it was expensive for me too but I was stoked when I got it. I thought the story was neat and the art was so cool. I loved how he painted Wolverine. Also Havok and Longshot were my favorite X-Men at the time. The story did move kinda slow and weird overall though.

I remember picking up these comics, but could NOT get into them. The art was just too hard to make out in my opinion. Glad to see they were experimenting, but it was just too hard for my dumb kid brain to get into.

You could give the comics away in a Patreon raffle. Maybe sign them with the episode # they were on?

Too bad you don’t like to read because the story is pretty good - better than some James Bond films. I can’t wait for your review of From Hell.

I loved it. I bought it about 2 or 3 years after released. It was my first 'weird/strange' comic. It left a big impression on me. Many of the Wolverine scenes are still in my head to this day.

In the context of these Marvel mini series, it was a different style/perspective.. of story and art that was much of the time just fantastic stuff. I believe this was called prestige format back in the 80's. Like Marvel Max and Dc's Vertigo line.

out of your mind ( referring to title of video) these are absolutely amazing books, and the art in person is some of the best watercolor pages Ive ever seen. Comics need to have more artistic freedom like these, or the industry as a whole ends up looking like, well, how it looks now......

Well. Im saying it didn’t work for ME. Thats all. Just my opinion. And theres a lot i like. And i TOTALLY agree there needs to be a lot more artistic freedom on stuff absolutely. But for me.. didn’t connect.

I’m not sure if I like the artist on this book or not. There are some gorgeous panels but also some really awkward ones.

Back in the 80'S this was called the "prestige format" marvel,DC,and the indies made a lot of them I got these when they came out I don't think wolverine's violence shocked me because he did a lot leathal force stuff in the X-Men comics like killing a guard in the savage land and killing 5 hellfire club soldiers and almost killing Harry Leland I thought the art was OK cause it had that sienkevitch-y vibe to it like a cross between stray toasters and big numbers I might dig it out to read it again......

God! I couldn't get through ten minutes of this video. Kent Williams is a brilliant artist, and listening to dude "critique" it like a ten year old who hasn't developed enough to appreciate art is painful.
