Officials in Hawaii are trying to determine how devastating wildfires were able to rip through the historic town of Lahaina on the island of Maui so quickly and without warning.
More than 80 people have died in the fires over the past three days, and that number is expected to rise.
Rescuers are searching the ashes of destroyed homes for anyone still alive.
Our Washington Correspondent Siobhan Kennedy is on the island of Maui - and has been to the War Memorial Centre in Wailuku, where some of the survivors are taking shelter.

This is the highest level of stress one can endure. The loss of loving family members, friends, pets, the security of your home, your job, and it happened to you all at once. Imagine doing this while you're facing a life threatening illness. Our hearts just can't go out to you enough. Islanders, you are constantly in my thoughts and prayers. Old Lahaina may be gone, but, a new one lives in the traditional spirit of the hearts and souls that remain.

My parents lost all pictures. So we the kids & grand kids never even seen pictures of them. We are living without knowing what they looked like. I developed fears of fire. I got burns on my Head. This brought back memories of when it happened. I refused to watch the videos. Only 3 days later I forced myself to watch a City burned down. I have a friend who not long ago moved to Hawaii. Only today I asked if they are ok. Hawaii is a paradise for me. I can only dream to visit. It is a very scary situation to very homeless & lost everything.

I suffered the trauma for decades. I suffered since I was a young Teen. The nightmare also fueled all my nightmares. My family once had a very nice brand new home built. My parents worked 30 plus years & saved. We were only abled to have only the outside shelves of the House built. We slowly filled in the inside walls. Then came a tragic event. We were only had all we have on our body. Pajamas with nothing else. Not even a pair of home Shoes. The just saved money we had to leave behind. I was a young 7 years old. Maui people lost everything by nature. I & my families lost everything by pure evil regime who robbed us. We went from have all that we needed to poorer than them. I was only 7 years old. I was so angry. My childhood was robbed as well. I was starving & homeless. All we do was for years in deep depression. Enslaved, tortures, diseased, worked to death, was on death sentence. We are innocent. We did nothing to anyone. Victims of wars. In a decade of my life I went through 3 wars. I hopes our government gives people good mental supports as well. As loosing everything is a severe mind trauma. I hopes everyone in Maui gets all they needs plus mental counselings. You well needs the counseling to make you well again.

@janefreeman995
@janefreeman995 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't try to make some conspiracy up. It's been months of drought, fallow combustible grasslands, wooden buildings and winds blowing up to 70mph gusts.... simply a perfect storm. With limited cell communication... people could have already scattered as well but unable to communicate their whereabouts or appropriate channel like the red cross with a missing persons list may not have been notified.

You learn a lot about what matters when you have to fit your whole life into a car. I took my 4 cats, some jewelry, one file folder of important documents, two paintings, portable tech and the clothes on my back. I’m much freer from stuff now that I learned what I actually care about. I’m also better prepared and have proper kit to bug out if I have to.

Old electrical poles and 70mph winds. Houses made of all wood is the biggest fuel. Embers can levitate drift and start other fires. Gas lines get exposed as well. This was a sad misfortune of events.

Extreme winds. Either a tree fell into power lines, or the lines/power pole fell... a very dense housing/ historic business district of wooden homes/businesses. Went up very fast, there was nothing that could've been done.

For everyone suffering ptsd and feeling huge loss, please know that you will have these blues and you’ll feel hopeless, which is normal but it’ll pass and resilience will replace it …. Then all of a sudden, you’ll see an enormous rebound, as help and love will arrive. I’ve endured several hurricanes, power outages & even full destruction … last September we had an oak tree come through my MIL’s roof/house during Hurricane Ian …. But in less than a year, nearly everything has been cleaned and debris removed, repairs made, and rebuilding has started …. My favorite restaurant on Boca Grande was destroyed completely, but last week I saw that the block foundation has been built and they hope to reopen by Christmas … hopefully for Hawaii there won’t be as much of the supply chain disruption as we saw last year, so they can rebuild more quickly. Prayers to all of those affected!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

You should buy loss insurance on the house in an amount greater than the mortgage, (lenders will insist on it) then the insurance company pays the mortgage lender first. If there is any money left over, then the homeowner will get it. Just because the house burns down does not mean the mortgage is forgiven.

The brush around the town used to be controlled by the sugar and pineapple industries, which have disappeared due to foreign trade. So the land surrounding the town has just become a uncontrolled mass of weeds and trees. Granted there were hurricane whipped winds that day, but the old industries used to have fire barriers in place due to their required occasional crop burnings. Now, no one controls that. Hence…
