These last couple of elections have really made me see the USA differently. I remember sitting in Shamrock's Irish Pub in Munich watching the 2016 election, thinking, "how could this happen"? Seeing the sadness spread across other international American and non-American faces solidified that I was in the right place at the right time. I remember watching the 2020 election in my apartment in Germany, hosting a livestream, and seeing all the craziness transpire. I was shocked that so many people showed up and voted for Trump but was even more terrified and saddened to see the January 6th outcome. Now, fast forward to 2024; sitting in my apartment in Florida and seeing the results of this election hits a little harder. I was holding on to the last bit of hope for this country. People may say, "It's not that bad," or "It's only 4 years," but I am not worried too much about Trump, I am more concerned about my "neighbors" and "countrymen" who are actively being the nastiest people I have ever met in my life. The hatred that I see in this country is so scary; the lack of respect for one another and the constant degrading of one another is at an all-time high. I know it is not ok to point fingers, but all of the negativity seems to mostly be coming from one particular side and one particular group. I believe many Americans chose to be on the wrong side of empathy and humanity this go-around. There is much rebuilding the USA has to do, and I hope it starts as soon as possible. I pray we are able as a unified country to brick by brick build each other up and not tear down one of the greatest and most diverse countries that I get to call home

One thing that shocks Mike the most about Americans is that they do not do their own research (especially Trump supporters). They hear him say "the sky is green and purple" and without looking up his supporters will say "yeah the purple and green sky is the best". The internet is readily available and people can not be bothereed to do (1) ounce of research on their own which is so scary to me.

This is pivotal to know as a citizen! There seems to still be a lot of propaganda and scare tactics holding people in place in the US for some reason. If this has to do with the history/origin of the US, I don't know, but that's my impression. I don't remember the percentage, but there was a huge percentage that were below 5th grade level reading proficiency. Right there is your answer why they do not research. They never learned how to do research. They intentionally keep people from getting an education, so they can't or won't do their own research and then vote accordingly. Dear Hayley, I just stumbled over you on KZbin. I salute your honesty and what you are saying. The reason you are talking about, why so many people voted for Trump is so perfectly put together. Trump is a narcissist and full of hate. Probably left over from his childhood. He doesn’t care about the USA. He only cares about two things: himself and power. He comes over like he gets a hard on, when he can make people suffer and there are many who in his age have a problem with impotence. He adores Putin and Kim Yong un. These are dangerous men who are not his friends. They’re using him, laughing about him and the second they’re done with him they would have no problem killing him. But he lacks the intelligent capacity to realize this, let’s face it to realize anything. I am an American living abroad and it scares the hell out of me, what may happen during his second turn. The saddest thing is, that all those millions of uneducated people who blindly voted for him, who praised him on his rallies, not even understanding what he was talking about, are going to be the ones who will suffer. They may have $10 a month more in their wallet, but the food is going to be more expensive, and the car is going to be more expensive and the mortgage rates are going to rise with interest because he doesn’t care about those people!!! if he deports even only 1 million of those migrants, who is going to clean the garbage from your street? Who is going to prepare your hamburger at McDonald’s? Who is going to clean the dishes that you ate from in the restaurant? Who is going to pick the vegetables and fruit that comes from the US, when you don’t have those people? Basically the employers will have to pay more money and therefore everything is going to get more expensive and the only people, who are really going to profit from him being a president, are his billionaire friends who so high up his butt, I’m surprised they can still breath. Elon Musk is a dangerous man and I don’t know how you’re feeling in America about him, here in Germany, we have serious problems which is electronic cars. Lately 160,000 had to be called back because of internal problems. But we’ll see. If this guy is going to surprise us, we are all going to profit. Unfortunately in this legislation, he surrounded himself with idiots, who will say yes, to everything and who are drulling over a position in his cabinet. But it seems in the USA they don´t want a "together", they want a "fight, fight, fight" ... against each other. I´ve never seen a country where this did lead to a positive future.

The worst thing is, that Elon Musk really is an illegal immigrant. He came as a student, but he did not study. He has his first enterprise with the money of his rich father. He is illegal, but nobody gives a damn, he is white and rich. And there he stands on the podium in tears about how gorgeous he is, another narcissist fallen completely for Russian Propaganda. They twittered he should be president. His meme: Zelensky has since 5 minutes not begged for money, is proven made by a female Russian member of this influencer Propaganda group, forgotten the name. And he is not such a genius, he linked his firm to PayPal, nobody liked him, they tricked him out, he kept his shares and sold them when PP was big and became rich. He had good ideas and found himself Genius people to make them reality.

I don't think that's the worst thing about all of this. Elon Musk being an illegal immigrant is of course a blatant hypocrisy (as is Melania Trump, basically the same issue), I daresay that Trump advocating for mass deportation of maybe 20 million people is the far gruesome prospect. Ukraine, Israel and his fixation on tariffs, probably provoking a trade war yet again, are next. There's quite a list of really, really bad things, including Musk likely defrauding investors by billions of dollars with Trumps help, before we should get to the little hypocrisies of Elon Musk being an illegal immigrant.

I've been watching DW (en Español), and they've been reporting that the EU government has been preparing for this, has begun to insulate the EU against the effects of a second Trump administration, and are ready to distance themselves from the US should it become necessary. Either way, the EU is becoming less reliant on the US after the first Trump administration. The reporting I'm seeing from around the world is all saying that the US is no longer seen as a steadfast, dependable partner in global affairs. I wonder if that will translate into more stringent entry requirements for Americans traveling abroad. That said, things are still on track for my moving to Portugal, and it may actually happen in the spring. I am VERY much looking forward to it.

As a German, there are so many things I don't understand about the political system: - First of all, the electoral college. Didn't make any difference this time, but this system is so unfair and ancient, a lot of votes are being ignored. Why has that never been changed? - Why are there still only two parties? - 4 years ago, I already thought: such a big, great country, and they only come up with Biden and Trump as candidates? HOW?? And this time, the democrats held on to Biden for so long, unbelievable, and then Kamala was chosen. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to see her as the first female president. But as you say, as a black female it was hard for her. Wasn't there anybody else to stand a chance against Trump!!?? But then again I look at Germany and ask myself: Is nobody here trustworthy and capable anymore? I just hope, that 4 more years of Trump don't bring more wars to our world than there already are.
@MichaelBurggraf-gm8vl5 күн бұрын
May I answer your second question: I strongly assume that that's due to the principle of the winner takes it all in every voting district (in the UK this principle is called first past the post). The candidate or party getting the most votes wins the voting district meaning that all other votes are being discarded. That principle encourages people to vote predominantly for parties with a reasonable chance of winning a district. As a result the number of parties seriously competing for representing a voting district narrows down to two although actually any number of parties could present itself or its candidate. In contrast, for example Germany is applying proportional representation meaning that all votes for parties (eg. Zweitstimme) are counted to determine the proportional share of votes of each individual party and consecutively to calculate the number of seats for each party in parliament (Bundestag). The only votes which get discarded are the votes for parties failing to reach or to exceed the 5% threshold. Long story short: the number of dominating parties is mainly a result of the method of counting votes and of determining the representation of a voting district. It's essentially a result of voting habits by the electorate/voters. In the USA, that process is complicated further by introducing an additional level of election called the electoral college where each state is treated like a kind of voting district with its respective number of electors. The president gets actually elected by the electors of the electoral college and not directly by the voting districts of the 50 states of the USA.
@caseyv95005 күн бұрын
Thank you very much for your detailed answer. It does make sense that the two-party system is a direct result of the electoral system. But I maintain that the electoral college makes little sense to me, I find it unfair.
@MichaelBurggraf-gm8vl5 күн бұрын
@@caseyv9500 As far as I know the electoral college has been introduced as a compromise in the early years of the USA trying to find a balance between different states, larger vs. smaller ones, urban vs. rural ones. But I'm no expert on that and I don't know the exact reasons for that institution. I only know that it's a part of the constitution of the USA which can be changed only with very large majorities in both, the Senate and the House of Representatives, which makes it very improbable of being changed ever. That's a bit of a burden of both, rule of law and a democracy based on an old constitution. In the UK the situation is even a bit more complicated because there's not one written constitution but a collection of several books of laws, agreements and well established traditions forming the legal basis for procedures and decisions of the Houses of Parliament. In contrast the German constitutions both of the Weimar Republic 1919 - 1933 and the Federal Republik of Germany since 1949 have been created with having something like the French constitution in mind. That appears to have a clearer, more logical and more modern structure. Additionally Napoleon initiated a legal reform resulting in a well structured set of books of law called the Code Civil which later was used by many continental European countries as an example of creating a clearer more comprehensible system of laws compared to older collections of laws. In Germany such modern (Napoleonic) books of laws are the BGB (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch, civilian book of law), the StGB (Strafgesetzbuch, book of penal law) and the HGB (Handelsgesetzbuch, book of commercial law). Mind that the term Napoleonic is meant to indicate only that it has been created with some inspiration from Napoleon's law reform in France.

As I said no substantial policies to address the needs, or improve the lives of the average American or to tackle the world problems facing all of us at the moment. The last 4 years have been a none event and I haven’t seen anything that she proposes to improve on that. I also fear for the next years with a Trump administration but at least he seems to be more aware that change is needed, so let’s see. I suppose what really worries me and many others in Europe is that a country with thousands of intelligent ‚ capable people such as the USA can only come up with such candidates for President ‚ on both sides of the political spectrum. Although truth be known we are not any better off with our politicians. God help all of us in the coming years.

The latter is always short of money at the end of the month and they look up to someone like Trump as a Mesias, because he has a villa in Florida and flies in on his own plane. That mass of uneducated people has primary thoughts to survive. My father, a business man and writer, always told me that it is easy to be a democrat when you are educated and you got a good, well paied job. Look at Eastern Germany, a part of Germany let down and canabalized (Treuhand) after the fall of the wall by Kohl and Merkel and the population is now voting for the fashist AFD. Look at the Weimar Republic, so many people didn't have jobs in the end plus the resession and all turned towards Hitler "to help them". Kamala / Biden and the Democrats were not able to realy reach and offer anything substancial to the lower class. NEXT TIME :) Kind greetings, Andreas

True. The drivers are always the same in these events. Democracy _needs_ the promise of a social career, no hunger, uneducation or unemployed person if they don't want to be. If that's not given by the state, democracy will loose.

Truth. But poverty and money shortage is a part of American economy. Americans do not have a right for sick leave, no federally guaranteed annual vacation, only ONE state offers maternity leave. Americans are sIaaaves to their work. All of this talk about freedom, but there is no freedom to get sick without losing one’s job. Yet everyone thinks it is normal 🤦
@CARambolagen5 күн бұрын
But exactly that narrative is the myth. Harris and Biden didn't just reach out to the working class, they DID something. What did Trump do other than serve as a fantasy foil for the destitute you describe?

I feel religion and simply being American were just a ticking timebomb for someone like the cheeto to win... When you are religious you are used to seeing words and sentences but being told what you read isnt what was written, words are explained to you. You can hear that in Trumpers when they try to explain away the nonsense he spouts. Being american is kinda the same, you are thought to mindlessly believe the USA is the best in everything you are from a very young age thought to follow those who scream the loudest and believe in mirages.... Sad but this was just waiting to happen... Look at Russia for instance, they too are indoctrinated from a young age and that gave us Putin. USA is just 1 step away from being a dictatorship and that is truely horrific.... I am Dutch and still in disbelieve over what happend...

Precisely. The US has always been primed for fascism and religion (Christianity) has played a very significant part in that. In fact many people voted for Mango Mussolini precisely *because* they want to turn the US into a Christian Nationalist or Christofascist nation.

You are so reflected and I totally agree. Living in Germany my whole life, of course I am aware that we get a different picture of DT than you in the USA. But I think his character and mindset is very clear - no matter where you live. And I never understand how so many people think that a man with this character/mindset/behaviour is perfect for being president of such a big country. Yes - this is very sad for the whole world because it sets an example and others will follow.

I love your perspective and how you found the words for it. This election reveals so much. I am frustrated tilting towards depression. As you said. Itś not Trump, it’s the people who made there choice for what he represents. Thank you.

Watching from Germany: Thank you for this video, this is one of the best analysis I heard up to now! And it is surprisingly also somewhat soothing (yes, I was also totally shocked, even though not american).

The same here ... Not angry, not fearfull, not panicing or anything. I was simply plain sad and lost my faith in humanity - my nasty AfD neighbor as well as any MAGA guy on TV. I'm talking about 2016. Semantics away: Of course this feeling never left me. But with every election or other major event, no matter if it's the AfD in Germany, Russian warcrimes or now a person like Trump again - this deep disappointment comes back again and again.

100% agree. This man is just winning (even though his slogan is "make america great again" which seems positive) through negativity. He is just talking about things he doesn't want, people that are "guilty"/responsible for stuff etc. But I cannot think of a single thing that he wants to add, to progress, which are good in his opinion...
@HayleyAlexis5 күн бұрын
That's what people forget... This man started this campaign in 2012/2013 because Obama was elected. It was a direct jab at a black president, hence him going on his long tirades about Obama not being a US citizen or born in the USA etc, etc. It is just hateful and that is why it gained so much traction because people hated the fact that a black man won the election. I remember the hatred that filled this country then but the difference was that Obama still won regardless of the outside noise but unfortunately this is different because these same jabs that include racial undertones or sexual undertones won....

OMG!! EVERY single word that you said could have been me talking! I'm an Independent voter who has voted mostly for Democrats, but never for Trump. I left the U.S. three years ago, planning to return, but life has only improved since I left. The racism in the U.S. hasn’t gone away-it’s just changed form...somewhat. They can’t openly revert to past discrimination, like it would have been in the 1800's or 1950's, although some try, so they do it in subtle ways. I love my country, but I struggle with what it's become. While not everyone is racist, overall, society still has deep-seated racial issues and the ignorance is INSANE! I worry every single day about my son and police brutatlity and I have talked to him about leaving the country. I used to think about the possibility of returning to the U.S. at some point, but I don't want to deal with the racist people, the people who think that they have a say so over a woman's body, the religious zealots who think that everyone is going to hell, etc. Besides, the culture where I live is amazing and it feels "alive" where I live, compared to the dull suburds of the U.S.

Is that dems biggest argument that "oh he's a racist" people are starving thanks to Biden and Kamala can't afford food or housing things were way be better when he was in office. The state of the country and the economy is more important than yalls TDS issues. The fact that the last administration just let the flood gates wide open to illegals and destroyed the U.S. is no big deal apparently even Kamala admitted that if she was in office she wouldn't have done anything different than Joe. Just sickening and f'ing insane we just dodged a bullet with this election.
