So glad you covered these 3 episodes together. It really is the best way to get the full impact of the most powerful scenes in the East Blue Saga. As many before have said, this is the moment most One Piece fans fell hopelessly in love with this story and knew they were in it for the long haul. It's not when One Piece "gets good" since it's been good since episode 1. It's not even the point where One Piece first gets epic: that was arguably Zoro's fight with Mihawk, showing us that our crew really are small fish in a small pond about to enter into the ocean. But it is the first time we get to see Oda's mastery of long-term storytelling. Nami's basically already told us her (current) primary motivation in EPISODE 5 when she said she was saving up 100 million berries to buy a village ... and most readers/viewers pretty much glossed over that entirely. Since then we've seen hints and glimpses of Nami's true character throughout the series, though always just slips of the mask she's always wearing. Episode 35-37 are the payoff of a story arc that started 30 episodes prior and we never even knew it. And it would never have been as powerful as it is if not for that 30 Episode lead-up. And the crazy part is, Oda does this ALL THE TIME in One Piece, setting things up in advance that seem like throw-aways that then hit like a dump truck hundreds of episodes later.
@dustinrausch50089 ай бұрын
While I do like the Live-Action One Piece, the original Arlong Arc was SO much better. One of the big things was the end here, in how it shows the kind of person Luffy is. Unlike the Live-Action, he goes in with absolutely *no* clue as to what's going on. He doesn't even know who Arlong is; the only reason he knows the guy's name at all is because Nami was shrieking it while stabbing her own shoulder. Luffy doesn't care about your past. He cares that you're his friend now, and he will demolish *anyone* who messes with you, no questions asked.

Those people clearly aren't paying attention, because the sbow LITERALLY explains why she does it. The _first thing_ the Fishmen do is destroy every boat on the coast. Isn't it wonderful that the first thing Luffy really do since he's come to Cocoyashi is to stop Nami from hurting herself? He completely respect her, he knows she needs help but he also knows that she is the only one who can ask for help and he must respect her choice whatever it is. Either Zoro, Sanji and Usopp somehow got involved already with Nami's behaviour (in the case of Sanji, his will to save her, while the other two actually tried to reason with her), but only Luffy let her completely free. But since they are friend, he won't allow her to hurt herself and once Nami finally asks for help, he immediately agrees, gives her his most important treasure and goes beat Arlong up. Simply amazing.

@boitaho9 ай бұрын
That's the one change in the LA that irritates me the most. A throwaway line from Gen or Nojiko would've done it, and Nojiko's tattoos would make sense.
@tylerdurden54069 ай бұрын
@@boitaho Narratively they had to make it align and weren’t going to flesh out Gen’s story further in the live action or give the villagers more screen time and lines. So essentially they were left trying to fix the hole in the story that if Nojiko knew she’d have probably been ostracized from the village for standing up for Nami - cause she wouldn’t break a promise to her sister not to tell anyone what she was doing - so instead they had to make it so nobody knows what’s going on. From a story perspective it still works and resonates with the general notes and themes…but I always found this version so much better and more emotional. Because the idea the entire village knows what’s going on and suffering quietly specifically because they didn’t want Nami to feel like she was trapped that they’d understand if she ever chose to run away and they’d never hold it against her if they did - that this was more solidarity of the village and done out of love - it’s just far better…but takes too much time to play out fully unfortunately
@ZarathosDaimaoh9 ай бұрын
@@tylerdurden5406 it's a hole they'd have created themselves anyway , there isn't a need for Nojiko to be there among the crowd to stand up for Nami . She could just have been at her house , with Gen sending the crew that way . I disagree that it takes more time to get the original stuff unfold , at least enough . The new scenes they added basically replace and matches the originals in airspace and time . Imo they just wanted their own take and artistic license , which is fine , but inferior
@tylerdurden54069 ай бұрын
@@ZarathosDaimaoh it’s hard to really understand thought how much goes into making the show. I don’t think this was re-written because they want their own artistic license - because Oda had final say on any proposed changes. So think of it in terms of how they had to reduce Bellemere, the Doctor has no lines, the fact they turned an animated arc consisting of 14 episodes (which even if you said there was only 14 minutes of meat in the 22 minute air time still is nearly 3 hours) and condensed it into under 2 hours. It wouldn’t have taken the same amount of on screen time - I mean sure we can cut Johnny and Yosaku, Hachi and Momoo - but they’re scenes don’t equal the fat that needs to be trimmed to condense and adapt it. So it’s very much they needed to take the rough outline of what’s left after what’s been cut and try and fit the puzzle pieces together still. You have to approach it considering many people introduced to the series through the LA won’t have the background context anime fans do, so everything needs to be on the screen. We need to relate to Gen and the rest of the villagers for this moment to have meaning. Because it shows how much they meant to the entire village outside of the family. The moment the villagers say - not to Nami and Nojiko but ABOUT Nami and Nojiko and Bellemere how they wouldn’t be happy without seeing their smiles….and how the village plays a role in raising the kids…all of that is the setup for the fact they all knew about the deal and kept it to themselves. It’s just going to feel hollow rather than heartfelt when you cut the other stuff, so you can achieve a similar (but ultimately lesser) emotional bond by having it so none of them knew what Nami was going through on their behalf and why they want to rally around her. Anime is superior but the LA did what they did for logistics
@ZarathosDaimaoh9 ай бұрын
@@tylerdurden5406 I'm talking about very specific scenes , if I'm not clear enough . it does not take really more airtime to have the village and Nojiko knows what happened , instead of scenes depicted them not knowing and lashing out . Of course there are constraints , but they likely did not just do everything solely with that in mind , they do have their visions . They even had to persuade Oda for some of those . Oda having final say and oversight does not mean that they cant artistically express themselves or at least plead with him over those

This was when One Piece stole my heart. At first I was watching just because I saw it as a fun lighthearted adventure show to kill time on, but from the moment Nami asked Luffy for help I knew then and there that I needed to see this story to the end. @ronnie-sillyme05609 ай бұрын
Passing over his hat is symbolic. He isn't asking her to take care of his treasures while retrieving hers. He is placing his treasure on the line, equally to hers. Meaning if he can't get her treasure back, he forfeits his. It's a sign of trust.
@happyslapsgiving54219 ай бұрын
Another thing that hits much harder here is the final line: "which one of you is Arlong?" In the live action, for some reason, they felt insecure about people caring about self-contained arcs, so they thought they could do better than Oda, and extended Arlong's role (and Coby's, and Helmeppo's, and Garp's, and Buggy's) to cover all or most the season. So when Arlong arrives at the Baratie and demands to see Luffy, to have that superfluous first fight, and Luffy comes out asking which one is Arlong... it falls flat. Because it doesn't mean anything. It's just posturing, one testosterone fueled dude to another. They might as well have added a "I heard you're talking crap about me" line, or something to that effect. Here, instead, it has a lot more meaning. Luffy has kept out of their affairs, refused to hear anything about Nami's story... he only cares that some guy named Arlong made his friend cry. And it doesn't matter who it is... it doesn't matter how big he is... it doesn't matter that he's the big boss in town. This Arlong made Nami cry, and so he's going to pay. Simple. End of story. ❤
@curtishammer7489 ай бұрын
I don't disagree, but I think it only fell flat for fans of the original. It was fan service that didn't have the same impact because of the plot changes, but it wouldn't have exactly detracted from the experience of those who didn't know

It really is not that they thought they know more than Oda. It is about resources. You do not want actors for couple minutes of screen time and then discard them not to be seen for xxx episodes.

It's not that "they felt insecure about people caring about self-contained arcs" There was just not enough time to flesh out everything. They needed to put some parts of Namis story further into the beginning so that they could even cover the most important parts. It's why the live action could never reach the impact of the anime. Because it doesn't have the time and budget to become that long and get every detail even in there. Yes, it is not as good, but it does convey the major feelings and important parts while being true to the original themes. That's why it's still great as the thing it is.

The villagers are Nami’s treasure. So Luffy giving her his straw hat is him saying, “you hold on to mind while I take care of yours.” They’re trusting each other with the other’s treasure.

This is basically the moment in the show when all of us back then fell in love with One Piece for the first time. It is the very first One Piece peak experience. And looking at all of One Piece released today it wouldnt even make the TOP5 best moments list. Kind of crazy.
@jeffreymeehan35679 ай бұрын
Why did Arlong make that deal with Nami? Because it gave her hope and a "legitimate" way to get out of the situation that he never thought she'd actually accomplish. People with no hope just shut down, and any sort of work they actually accomplish is lack-luster and mediocre at best. However, if they think they have a chance for something better they'll strive for it. By making her one hope an avenue through him, Arlong basically guaranteed Nami's cooperation lest she "break" their deal and her one hope for freedom gets snuffed out. It is literally a way to manipulate her into accepting her chains because she has hope she can actually be free of them if she plays along and doesn't betray her owner. It's sick and twisted, but it worked.

This is why we say it's worth it. Getting people to these episodes is the barrier of entry to whether you'll enjoy the rest of the show.

I respect the heck out of Emily Rudd, Inaki Godoy, the composers and directors for nailing this scene in the live action. If they had messed this scene up, it would have been over. They did this scene justice, especially Emily Rudd's acting
@tranatkikomi68739 ай бұрын
Emily knew that the impact would absolutely matter, being an old school fan, especially of Nami. She would have been working on that for years just in case she ever got involved with One Piece, and then she was cast as Nami. And she kept working on it until she knew she would absolutely nail that moment. And she nailed it. The absolute agony in her voice as she screamed Arlong’s name while stabbing her arm, the sorrow and fury, and then finally, the desperate plea for help. She nailed every second of it.

I don’t know, despite in the live action they made a very good adaptation, the anime version of Arlong Park’s walking still hits different

My favourite underrated part of this batch of episodes was Nami deciding not to ask for help anymore because every time she did in the past (Gen-san especially), they got hurt. She carried that guilt with her for so long that because of her, Gen-san was cut up so badly and wrapped in bandages. It made the part where she finally asks Luffy for help hit harder. She was so desperate and finally made herself vulnerable to her friends to share this burden that she’d been carrying alone for so long. Meanwhile, Gen-san kept wearing the pinwheel because even though he and the rest of the villagers had to act like they didn’t know about Nami’s plan so as not to burden her further and act like they hated her, all he wanted was for her to keep smiling the way she did as a child - the smile that saved Bellemere. That’s why when Luffy and his crew finally returned her smile to her, Gen-san made him promise not to ever take that smile away from her. In the manga, Nami’s changed tattoo (from Arlong Park branding to a tangerine + pinwheel - the symbol of the mother figure and father figure of her life) couldn’t completely cover the old one so she actually has a deep scar around the back of her shoulder that was featured in a couple of scenes that I don’t think the anime ever adapted.
@second13879 ай бұрын
The PINWHEEL is what makes Nami smile when she was a child but this time, a rubber boy from WINDMILL village is making her smile. It's all in a cycle!

You know a show is iconic when people walking is a big deal. This was one of the biggest scenes when it first came out cause not only did you have luffy leading the charge but you had the whole crew. It's the you mess with one of us you mess with all of us phrase brought to life. Luffy didn't even hear the whole story from Nojiko either. He walked off before she said it. All he knew was that somebody named arlong messed with his navigator and that's all he needed

They nailed the Nami hat scene in the live action, but I was a bit disappointed they didn't do the walk to Arlong Park. It's one of the most iconic scenes in the whole series
@lonewolf93259 ай бұрын
For the walk to work, the plot would need to be the same.. I mean who really knows the direction to the Arlong Park except Nami and the villagers.. in the anime, Only Usopp knew..forget Zoro's direction reliability.. Johnny and Yosaku, even if small characters, add that cheesy element of hype while the Walk goes on.. The music would need to be great as well.. In the LA, if only Nami knew the way..imagine her walking alongside the crew, and the badass music plays..people would have destroyed the LA then and there if Nami was part of the Walk.
@tarunupadhyay28219 ай бұрын
The reason they did not do walk to Arlong park is because it doesn't exist in manga and LA is manga adaptation.

@@-l-3591He had to make sure he got it on her head properly. In the anime, he can easily slam it on her head, because there is no chance of hurting her. But Inaki could accidentally hurt Emily if he were to slam the hat on her head too hard. So he had to make sure it went on her head and then push it down so it was on firmly.

Belle-mere, Nojiko and Genzo are such amazing characters. That was my main gripe in the life action. It needed a third episode to flesh out how important these characters are to Nami
@curtishammer7489 ай бұрын
I think they were originally planning for 12 episodes, then it got scaled back to 10 before finally settling on 8. Usopp and Nami both could have really benefited from even 2 additional episodes imo. If they don't give at least 2 to Drum and 3 to Alabasta next season I'm gonna be unhappy

Honestly what hit harder in the anime as well was Nami hearing the story of how Bellmare found them, it’s so much more interesting to hear it from a completely different perspective, it wasn’t shown really at all that Bellmare was a huge troublemaker in the live action

Man, Bellemere is the coolest. And even with how tragic some of the other Strawhats' backstories are, especially some of the Grand Line ones, Nami's is somehow still the most devastating (which is crazy given how horrible one of the future ones has it). 30:44 Yeah. This whole set of episodes is so much better than the live-action, and the live-action did a really good job of adapting it.
@bluelight179 ай бұрын
Bellmere both refused to act as if her, Nami and Nojiko weren't a family, also as a former marine she knew the navy wouldn't do much this far away from the grand line, and it would have been hard for Nami and Nojiko to run away from the island and Arlong. Or that even if they managed, she was well aware that it would have been very hard for two little girls to survive out there, they had a better chance if the village helped them going on. Nami's backstory is really heartbreaking...

"It hit so hard" It always do 😭to this day, a flashback starts, you probably gonna cry. Love to see it how the "Luffy... Help" me scene was almost 1 to 1 in the live action, just the lighting for better dramatic effect.
@RobSomeone9 ай бұрын
It's so much more devastating here than the live action because Nami doesn't care that she lost the money, she cares that she'll lose her village. When she couldn't stop the villagers is when she literally lost everything. Cutting out the plot device of Johnny and Yosaku was a mistake imo just for that exact moment.
