Kumadori is named after a style of kabuki stage makeup. The patterns and the colors on the face represent character archetypes in Kabuki. Red lines are used for heroes, blue is for villains, and brown is for otherworldly creatures. Kumadori's face has blue accents, because he is a villain and the pattern on his face I believe is supposed to be a classification called Zare-guma which is to say that he is a villain who is meant to resemble an animal and thus not be taken seriously.

Well it's more like he was testing the waters. I think he wanted to do something like that but quickly abandoned it because he didn't want the same problem DBZ has which is that eventually you reach levels of power that take away the impact of the battles.

@Tom-re6zo Could be the case, but I always read it more as comical in nature, making a joke out of Spandam or having a comical difference between Kaku and Jabura of 10 so that Zoro and Sanji would keep the number 2 and 3 spots in the crew Whatever the case, I just love the reverence for Toriyama's work!

Honestly, reading it as a nod to Toriyama is the most generous interpretation of that moment. I always hated the weird compulsion of shonen mangaka to exposit their characters's capabilities with ridiculous numbers. It's just super lazy and makes the world feel so much less real. Oda had such a great way to show the character's progress, with numbers even, that enriched the world, with the bounties, and then he goes and throws this nonsense in. As this was never mentioned again (at least up to where I'm at) I suspect, he feels the same way. Maybe he was talked into introducing it by an editor, but that might just be me wanting him to not be (solely) responsible.

Kumadori is a Kabuki-Performer, Kabuki being a form of Japanese theatre incorporating song and dance as well as intricate make-up and costumes, hence his theatrical attitude. Kumadori's appearance was most likely inspired by a lion's spirit such as in the play "Shunkyo Kagamijishi". The word "Kumadori" is the name for the make-up that Kabuki performers put on.

Kumadori (the white haired dude from CP9) is based on Kabuki actors. If you search on google you'll see that his appearance matches them. Also Kabuki is a traditional form of japanese theater and the actors are very dramatic. For those who've watched Naruto, Jiraiya is also based on one of the Kabuki stories (but i don't remember which one).

There are some great additions to the soundtrack during this arc. The titles often come from OP movies, so they don't always make sense for the anime canon, but the music itself is fire. In this episode we get to hear "The Very Very Very Strongest" for the first time, as the train pulls up on the iron fence. Not long ago, when Sogeking first appeared before Sanji and Franky on the train, we heard "Luffy's Fierce Attack" for the first time. Both of these will be played around the time of an extremely badass scene later on that everyone remembers, but not very much happens so it's best to see firsthand.

I feel like the Competition power thing wasn't just to set up how strong CP-9 is, because we never get any of the Straw Hats' power levels, but rather as a way to state that Spandam is the weakest person on the island despite being everyone's boss. It just makes him that much better of an overall villain, that he's complete and total trash by comparison to everyone else on both sides, but is still the biggest threat and the worst person there just because of the man he is.

If you guys are going to do a lot of anime, you'll see a ton of cultural references like Kabuki theatre. The dramatic guy with long hair, he's based on an actor of the style. The term kabuki can mean "being weird" or "offbeat. (Taken from Google, I'm not bilingual in Japanese lol) If you ever get into Naruto, one of the most famous character from it is based on Kabuki as well.

So, the scene with the round guy getting kicked around and then scoring his comrades was basically Oda making fun of anime power scaling (which some OP fans insist on doing anyway)! For one thing, how could kicking accurately assess the power level of someone who DOESN'T FIGHT BY KICKING (such as Lucci or Kaku)?! For another, Oda is on record as saying that trying to rank different devil fruits or characters doesn't make sense, because who wins a given fight is much more driven by their will (and presumably, like, terrain and other circumstances) than by some kind of intrinsic strength. Which is what we'll see when we compare the outcomes in this section of the arc to what happened in Water 7 when our crew was in disarray.

Well there are some tall humans they've already adapted and they aren't that tall. Garp is one example. Morgan is tall in the live action but not as tall as in the manga. But I imagine for people where their height is a major part of their character, they will make them tall. Maybe not the Franky family but probably e.g. Kuma and Whitebeard.
