Currently 22 and I found out about Hazel Scott when I was about 15-16 because I loved (and still do) doing research. I found out she was Caribbean like me and was automatically hooked. I watched her documentary and have been in love with her each since. Even I love with her fashion style omg she always styled herself so impressive. I also love how she put her foot down and helped bend the stereotypical role of black people playing a “help”. Whenever I see Alicia Keys playing two pianos I just thank the influence of Hazel, absolutely incredible talent she left behind, she lives forever ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Like Lena Horne, Hazel Scott represened the high Black bourgeoisie of the Jim Crow era. She would not take any demeaning roles portraying maids or buffoons on the Silver screens. She became one of the first black entertainers to host her own televsion program and married the young attorney Adam Clayton Powell Jr. The couple was held as an exmaple back then of upper crust Black culture.

But I assume that when the world's taste in music moved on from swing , jazz, and the big bands she became less popular. She is probably best known now as Adam Clayton Powell's second wife. Ms. Scott is just a genius. I am from New York and I learned about her in elementary school in the 90''s in the Bronx and Harlem. The Schomberg Institute in Harlem had a whole exhibition on her. In New York especially Harlem the black greats are taught in many of our schools. There are so many great black artists from the past that we do not hold up. She was erased by the history books because of her stand on equality. She lived in Paris after they blacklisted her. Our people used to be so talented. No one in popular black culture has this kind of talent. It's kind of sad that mediocrity is lifted up with talent being suppressed. I’ve never heard of Hazel Scott before this video! What a force! Aside from the video, can you do a video on Black women in the 60s and 70s and what their diets were? The bodies were different back then. A lot of women back then were much slimmer. I would like to know the difference from back then and today. There is an obvious difference.

I totally agree and I think it’s got to do with processed foods. Back then people grew some of their own food and their skin and hair looked healthy

My mom says portions were smaller, more physical activity for all people, and fast food was not a constant. I looked at pictures of her classmates and I do not see obese young people.

Thank you for this excellent video on Hazel Scott. I learned about Ms. Scott from my parents. We lived in NYC when I was a child, my Father was a jazz buff and educated me on many popular Black musicians, artists, writers, and politicians from the early 20th century.
