Like Lena Horne, Hazel Scott represened the high Black bourgeoisie of the Jim Crow era. She would not take any demeaning roles portraying maids or buffoons on the Silver screens. She became one of the first black entertainers to host her own televsion program and married the young attorney Adam Clayton Powell Jr. The couple was held as an exmaple back then of upper crust Black culture.

Currently 22 and I found out about Hazel Scott when I was about 15-16 because I loved (and still do) doing research. I found out she was Caribbean like me and was automatically hooked. I watched her documentary and have been in love with her each since. Even I love with her fashion style omg she always styled herself so impressive. I also love how she put her foot down and helped bend the stereotypical role of black people playing a “help”. I first read about Hazel Scott back in the 1970's and 1980's. She was a very popular performer in the 1940's and 1950's. But I assume that when the world's taste in music moved on from swing , jazz, and the big bands she became less popular. She is probably best known now as Adam Clayton Powell's second wife. Another great edition! Ethel Waters was actually the first black person of either gender to have their own TV show though 11 years before Scott. After shutting down the production of “The Heat’s On” (as you pointed out), Columbia studio head, Harry Kohn promised she would never make another movie as long as he lived… fifteen years later, she would finally be offered an acceptable role whilst in Paris thinking she broke his damning curse. Turned out he was right as he died the day before…. Juilliard had an age limit of 16 at the time so for her to take lessons as a little black girl in the 1920s at eight was beyond phenomenal on several levels… Love the series; keep up the great work.
