You’re not looking deep enough… that’s the surface level information. I believe in this scene Paul sees the evil he will do in the future and that his mother is responsible for him drinking the water of life and pulling the strings. This scene is more than a mere emotional outburst, it’s a teaser into things to come.
@N8R_Quizzie
@N8R_Quizzie 10 ай бұрын
@@alexpaleale oh yeah I understand that. A lot of people thought Jessica was really cold and uncaring towards Paul. I think Paul is really perceptive because the Bene Gesserit really did make him a freak, and when he travels South all of his fears are realized that he had before. He becomes what he feared he would become. It's a very strong and natural progression of character through the movies and I just absolutely love how consistent it is.

More like forced Messiah, he did not wanted to be, but they pushed him, Jessica was soooo soo in love with the idea of her son being the Messiah that she forced Paul to a path that will only give him pain
@christopherpumphrey7023
@christopherpumphrey7023 9 ай бұрын
He was being forced to the path until the Harkonnen’s destroyed the sietch. That is when Paul said “I will do what must be done.” He veers from the group going south to drink the water of life. After he gains prescience no one forces him. He knows what must be done in order for the people he loves to survive. There is no way for him to communicate this though. It would be incomprehensible to others because he was bred for this. Paul is one of the most horrifying and saddening characters ever written.

In the book he doesn’t know why he can’t mourn his father all the while he’s succumbing to the prescience for the first time. His mind is changing becoming more analytic, envision all these probabilities one of which is a holy war carried out in his name. But all he wants to do is feel sad for his pops but he can’t because he’s basically becoming a human computer simulator. But by the end of it he finally is able to mourn his father’s death.

@Vacerous
@Vacerous 2 ай бұрын
That's what I love about this scene it's so rich. It's like there are 2 sides speaking at the same time. One is the scared boy that Jessica ultimately reigns in, but the other is the "freak" the Bene Gesserit have created. One voice is terrified of what he sees, the other would revel in those very flames. Take the line "fanatical legions worshipping at the shrine of my father's skull! A war in my name! EVERYONE shouting my name" that doesn't sound like it's being delivered by "Paul", the scare little boy who just lost his world. He physically tries to move himself out of the vision, backing away, but the way he delivers it conveys that sadism, that ecstasy, over what he's seeing. So you have to ask, who's "name" are they shouting? Paul? Lisan Al Gaib? Mua Dib? or Kwisatz Haderach?

Watching this scene after seeing Part Two, I finally understand. The vision of Chani leading him to his destiny had two meanings to it. Paul couldn't see the whole vision, because his sight wasn't fully developed yet. Chani served the purpose of helping Paul become the Kwizats Haderach, but it was Alia who was manipulating and leading him there this whole time. Leading him to become the Lisan Al Gaib.

@@nateborie6329Ultimately, it was Paul's own desire for revenge or vengeance. He just needed a little or a big push to fully decide and commit. What stopped him in the first place was his fear of destruction and death. He was still just a boy who became the Duke over a night, traumatized, confused and afraid. But, eventually, he had to answer to the call of a new leader. He followed this -- “A great man doesn’t seek to lead. He’s called to it. And he answers. And if your answer is no, you’ll still be the only thing I ever needed you to be. My son. I found my own way to it. Maybe you’ll find yours.”

Such a good scene. Great directing. A Spice vision from Paul. Such a pretty psychedelic desert movie. Really does do justice and pay homage to Lawrence of Arabia. You know what's wild, is I've watched this movie a few times and just seeing this scene, when Paul snaps, he taps into "the voice" when he says, "get off me." I did not notice that before.

I think a cool concept in Dune is the concept of “humanity”, Frank Herbert believed that the ability to think and act independently of our primal instincts “programming” is what makes us human. The gom jabbar test was done to gauge Paul’s humanity, but we see something distinctly different after he takes the water of life in part 2. To achieve great power, Paul and Jessica effectively have to give up some of their humanity. Paul becomes locked in to a future beyond his control and becomes something of a tragic figure. He’s got “divine” powers of foresight but is essentially a slave to his power. It’s a beautifully crafted narrative about the dangers of power and losing one’s way.

One interesting thing about this is the differences between this vision and the events of Part 2. In this vision Paul wears full gold armor and fights alongside the fedaykin on foot. In Part 2 he wears traditional fremen robes goes with Stilgar on the worms to the Throne room while Chani and her Fedaykin fight outside on foot. In his vision, Chani approves of the battle and stands dutifully beside him on the ship's ramp looking down on Paul's troops. She is portrayed as his faithful devoted companion. No doubt is visible from her. Like she is in the book. In Part 2 she argues with Paul about his goals and methods repeatedly. Disapproves of the fremen waging crusade and Paul leading the fremen. Rejects his right to rule, his divinity, and ultimately abandons him out of fear of what he is becoming. It makes me wonder if Denis made those differences because he wanted to show how choices he and her made resulted in different outcomes.
