It isn't fair to say that Cinemassacre is a content mill right now, but there was a point where Screenwave had the channel putting out a lot of irrelevant stuff, which has now completely stopped, and the only videos it does are AVGN, Neighbour Nerds and the occasional film review. People had been asking for the content to be pared down only to things James was directly involved in, so they got what they wanted? As for the plagarism section, it was probably the least serious because it was perpetrated by someone they hired, and they removed it once it was brought to their attention. I think that's forgivable.

Honestly it didn’t shock me, because what else can you say about cinemassacre’s plagiarism - it wasn’t done in the same vein as illuminaughti or James Somerton, where those two did it to support their unsustainable growth, to perpetuate a false persona. James just got caught up in a third party resorting the plagiarism to sustain a schedule they weren’t professional or talented enough to do. I mean there’s no real outrage for AVGN over it anymore, it was a dumb move by all involved at the time but no indicative of a pattern of trying to royally screw over the fanbase, you know?

Is there that much pushback towards James because of the video? I thought the general consensus was that he was bringing up 'old' things that most people were already aware of. The Ghostbusters 'non-review' video always seemed disingenuous to me. He wasn't just saying he wasn't going to see the movie, he was saying he wasn't going to see it because he thought it looked bad and he thought he would hate it. That's not being neutral, like everyone says, that's him pre-emptively writing the film off as a piece of garbage, and he encouraged others to do the same. The video was basically advocating for a boycott of the movie, while presenting itself as "I'm just being a normal rational guy here being bullied because I won't take a side on this debate. Also, don't see the movie because it's going to be trash."

Not really much push back. It’s been a widely known thing since it happened and if anything it’s just reaffirming that James didn’t have anything to do with it. Though in that same breath it just reaffirms that James doesn’t write all his own reviews anymore (he has always had people help him write other material like Mike did many of the Nerd scripts) which is also sad in its own right.
@OnlineVideoSurfer Жыл бұрын
@@kennethd4958 Yep. I also think one of the larger points (not even just with James) is how plagiarism rots the channel too. In AVGN's case, even if James had nothing to do with the plagiarism debacle, the laziness of the plagiarism and the fact that James wasn't even writing his own content meant that his videos were losing the very appeal that attracted people to his channel to begin with. Obviously AVGN's case is nowhere near as bad as someone like Illuminaughtii where questionable plagiarized facts were thrown into her video sludge, nor is it as consequential as big creators stealing from small ones and burying them in the process. You're spot on about art at the end of the clip. It is about someone using their actual mind to communicate something to the rest of the world at the end of the day. Something that I found interesting is that the creators of Midjourney said they geared the whole thing to what would appeal to a 38 year old male (ie a tecbhro), and they found that because of this it's had substantially more adoption and popularity with older generations than it has with gen Z and gen alpha, which is extremely rare for new technologies. So who knows, maybe the younger generation will just reject it wholesale.

Yeah gaming channels seem to be pretty blatant about stealing stuff from smaller creators. It's frustrating. And Ai - oh boy. I use it to cut out filler words in unscripted content. Premiere will make a transcript of my video and then I can highlight a sentence and cut it out. Or have a larger video, copy the sentence and drag it to my timeline. But AI as a standalone art producer? It'll replace stock images for sure, but it's so stylized that people can already identify it as Ai and the Ai "artists" are so artistically challenged that they almost always type "in the style of" to get it to do what they want. And they don't understand it. Having dabbled with it myself, there's a lot of massaging that has to be done in order to get something coherent enough to even consider publishing it. You're better off spending the time to learn photoshop and creating it yourself in about the same amount of time.

The average person who works 8 hours 5 days a week doesn't so much care where their music comes from. AI generated music was as inevitable as McDonalds or market-tested cabal pop music, where each song is created by 50 producers writers and engineers, and no involvement from the band or face that performed it. Music is already based on science and math, it's going to be very easy to catch listeners and make money. It's too low effort for music producers big and small to not latch onto it.

I think a lot of reason people plagiarize is they maybe aren't really all that interested in what they are talking about or are just learning something. When I first learn something, I copy it word for word and slowly I start to better understand it then give it my own spin. But, when I've been asked to give a report on something I genuinely have no fucking interest in, I will outright copy it from someone else, usually I don't even attempt to hide that I stole it.

Using someone else’s material is fine as long as it’s properly and visibly sourced. But there also is a fine line there if you’re profiting off someone’s entire work whether it’s sourced or not.
@gocsa Жыл бұрын
@@kennethd4958 We all know there's a limit to that though. It is a bit vague but most of us know (or feel) the difference between using sources, quoting and flat out plagiarism. For example, in Bimmy's 28 days later video, some words and phrasing was changed here and there and there were some original things in there but we all know that was still plagiarism - citing the source would not have changed a thing, still plagiarism.
@kennethd4958 Жыл бұрын
@@gocsa True. But it might have been a little better then flat out trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own. At least if they had said “This was a review from blah blah that we quoted and added our own opinion to” it might have not had as much backlash. You’re absolutely right, it’s still plagiarism no matter how you slice it though.

@@kennethd4958 What the Gay Brit overlooked was that The problem with Plagiarizing is you're only guilty when it's obvious and hardly ever is. Is what IH did Plagiarizing? Sure. do people care? No. Because it doesn't fit what would be considered obvious. If you want to be a little bitch about it, everyone plagiarizes everyone. But most people, most of the time aren't obvious. Do you think Egg-Head Twink was the first person to make a video to complain about Plagiarism? No. How does one get around this? Be a Gangster and Admit it. Cite all sources, even if you don't feel them relevant. Let the nerds call you a fraud or herald you a true pimp. My theory is most people aren't usually upset with the act anyways, but rather the attempted Illusion that you didn't do it.

using movies as an example. I don't think you'll see movies being made by AI any time soon, but movies made with some form of AI assistance might become the norm in ⁓20 years. even if we don't see it in the final product, a lot of concept art, unfinished cuts and even unedited scripts can be streamlined with it. at the end of the day a good chunk of the audience and big corporations don't see movies as a form of connection between the artist and viewer, but as content to keep people subscribed to a streaming service.

Long time listener, never commented before. I disliked the HBomberGuy video and what it represents. One of the top, joyous, comments on HBomberGuy's video was "you only post twice a year, and we get this!" Which means instead of the creator investing energy into a creative expression of his own ideas or feelings, he instead opted to make one of his two yearly comments a moralistic and ultimately pointless hall-monitor like 4-hour denunciation on a bunch of people I wasn't fond of already. It represents the circular, self-referential purity cult aesthetic that often takes over leftish spaces, where a future vision is obliterated before a need for endless pointless struggle session. I'm not arguing stealing other's work is good because it isn't. But a purity cult gooning over the latest sinners is useless to moving forward - but very useful for looking backwards. Anyway, I enjoy your comments and analysis and listen while I work.

Maybe im crazy, but these arent scholarly works, i dont care if youtubers plagiarize something. If its your content, i could understand being like, "where's assistant producer credit?", but putting up a video isnt an agreement to making an original contribution to a field. Hey hey, I got a hot scoop! The Internet Historians Shia videos? He copied the plot off 4Chan! And that video about the boat? That wasnt original research either. Take that and blow this sonabitch wide open. And if plagiarizing is a problem "react content" must be a problem too, cuz they aint even putting the work into plagiarizing it. But also im not super attached to any youtube creators, maybe if i was, I'd feel some sense of betrayl

Regarding the "reaction video" movement on KZbin: A good long while ago on the Giant Bombcast Jeff Gerstmann was talking about what he called "remix culture." The short version of his point was that Mystery Science Theater 3000 was doing it 30 years ago and it had merit then, the logical evolution would be people talking over video games via let's plays and that rolls right into reaction videos.

The rights owners are the one responsible for striking down content, not KZbin, and whether or not a reaction video is transformative is for the courts to decide, not you or anyone else. You guys make enough content about other content that I would've thought you'd support the strongest possible protections for fair use.
