I'm glad Red Cow commented that the VHS commentary is intentionally a throwback. He restates the theme of the channel (nostalgia) and he acknowledges the store could go away someday (his own window of time to be creative). There are some interesting differences between the VHS collection videos over the years; they're like markers of transition points in his career. Also I think no one's mentioned this video store replica set is his own and not the other complete replica video store set that is Screenwave's. It's a subtle territory shift. Like Frankie said I'm not a hater, but Rolfe is strangely like a show I've been watching for almost 20 years now, so the highs and the lows are all fascinating.

I've also been following Cinemassacre since the beginning, I even had Cinemassacre's web page as my starter at some point in the 2000s. James Rolfe being afraid that if he doesn't upload constantly that he will lose everything kind of perplexes me when you look at Jontron. Jontron: - uploads infrequently (even going on hiatus for so long at one point that his subreddit became a Scott the Woz board) - completely changed the subject matter of his channel from video games to random things he talks about - had a controversy where he said things that can be construed as racist - continues to take sponsorships from Raid: Shadow Legends He also has 2 Million+ more subs than Cinemassacre even though he himself was a fanboy of AVGN (and even appears on a couple Cinemassacre videos). This is anecdotal but I also hear constant buzz if there is a new Jontron video, but I only actually know 2 people irl that have even watched AVGN. Hopefully the VHS video is James Rolfe realizing that people watch his channel for him so as long as he is actually creating the content himself his fans will support it. 5 AVGN videos a year is fine, as long as they're good AVGN videos.

Let's be real, James has made enough money over the years that he is very comfortable, and clearly, he has lost a bit of the passion he had in the beginning, when they were tying to actually build this thing. He's obviously not interested in spending as much time and energy and he once did with this channel, and that's his right, since he's accomplished much of what he originally wanted to accomplish. As for the actual content...I think it's very clear that much of the charm that made the channel into the popular entity it became, was due to the input and direction of Mike. When Mike was producing...the show had a general feel of friends who were passionate about these subjects, and organically produced things that appealed to others who shared that passion. With Mike now gone...much of the charm is now gone. Now, it feels like they are just doing a 'job', as opposed to having fun. Most know that Mike was the 'actual' AVGN...and James simply played the role on camera...and it just worked. With Mike's input gone, it no longer really works. I don't blame James, or the Screenwave guys...you can't expect those guys to become Mike, and you can't expect James to keep the same passion, when his friends who he created this with are now gone, and it's become more of a job than a passion.

James Rolfe is a legendary man. He was a pioneer that started the first of the popular KZbin sub-sections (being the "angry reviewer" trope), and paved the way for the Let's Play channels that came later. In the golden age of AVGN his guerilla filmmaking was inspired and added a higher production value to his content that put him leagues above his peers, with his writing being funny but also very relatable as it came from a place of pure emotion. Relatability carried James's appeal further, as his subtle passion when discussing things he enjoyed in series like Board James or Lookin' At Books made him so charming where other reviewers floundered when out of their elements. As he got older he lost the anger associated with his early days (which is a part of life and growing up, as well as the fact that he had exhausted most of the shittier games he played when he was a kid), but kept a lot of the likeability. Screenwave has always been a parasite (look into Screenwave's business with Newgrounds, who they were doing business with prior to James), and since they latched on James has seemed less and less interested in the channel and content. I'm glad he is getting back to making his own content his own way. Hopefully one day Mike can come back too.

Rolfe COULD do just three vids a year, IF he was still the guerilla filmmaker of the mid to late 2000s... but it is evident that's not the way to finance an idealistic family life, so he wanted his creation titled 'Cinemassacre' to take off as a franchise of which he'd be more like the boss than an active member. I would say why doesn't he pursuit his film making now that he's got money for financing, but i don't consider him a great filmmaker at all. He is into this done-on-purpose ultra 'B' likeable trash... only problem is, AVGN aside, non of it is likeable, ever. Questionable or downright hilariously bad decisions every step of the way still you gotta understand the guy he desperately looks for something that could serve as a stable platform for the rest of his active life cuz god knows how much longer the AVGN and some nostalgia can hold his roof up.

Should have kept Mike and Bootsy around. Zero interest in the new crew or their opinions. I understand that James has a lot of responsibilities, including his family, but the overall quality of the content has definitely taken a dip. Bootsy could have taken over for James for "James and Mike Monday's", and Bootsy Beats would have been a great series if it had taken off. Also, though this might be an unpopular opinion, regardless of how big a fan of movies James might be, his commentary on movies always comes across as generic and lacking any real insight into the craft.

I think the sub figured out he only worked like a week or two on the podcast over a 5 month period

So is James a pretty lazy guy? I mean, if he can’t make it to a podcast on a regular basis then I don’t know. I do remember him and Mike talking about how burned out they were doing ‘James and Mike mondays’ which to me was a bit comical - I mean they got together and played video games and commented along the way.

One point made in this video I can agree with not just about Cinemassacre but any channel is too many uploads in a week generally causes me to unsubscribe. I knew the quality off and there were so many uploads that I unsubscribed from Cinemassacre a while ago. In some cases though, I unsubscribe if a channel has like an upload a day because it drives me nuts seeing too many notifications on the side when I look down the list.

I think that VHS nostalgia video is great, James reminded us why we started watching his channel 15 years ago. He left a big mark on my childhood and I will always be grateful for that. These guys are very interesting and mostly on spot. The quality of the Cinemassacre drasticaly dropped a long time ago, but I kinda expected that tbh. The dude on the right is a bit too cynical, even though he makes some great points. Most people enjoy downfalls of others and so do I, but I really can't go to the Cinemassacre truth on Reddit, very toxic people over there.

Yeah It was one of the best modern shows from Cinemassacre. Because...they have passion while James has none.

I personally thought it was kinda boring and uninteresting and unfunny, but Mike doing Ernie's voice was pretty funny, particularly the cackle. I think that's all I have to say about it.

That's where some people come to beg for money for extra content that other people can't see cause you have to be a paying subscriber. Patreon is such a sucky place to go to.

I think the best of AVGN is the first 100 episodes. I think it started to be more commercial right when he switched over to HD. As I noticed the show had lost it's magic and felt more corporate when he started filming in HD.

I can’t say I hate Screenwave’s involvement with the Cinemassacre channel. I do think I prefer their Cinemassacre-adjacent content, though. Hack the Movies (with Tony) is entertaining. Talk About Games (with Mike and Ryan) might be my current favorite “simple format” gaming podcast. Ryan’s the co-founder and President of Screenwave and he seems like a cool guy.
