This video and all other materials you've created about this method deserve a bump once a week until everyone who can find a use for this knows about this. I've reinvented the method while trying to solve a particular problem, but then I streamlined it thanks to your original article, and it has been saving tons of time while allowing me to produce awesome results. This is gold.

Amazing technique, especially for backgrounds which are so time consuming to detail.

Dan, you can actually use an indexed palette with this process! You just have to have your gradient divided in equal flat color parts of your ramp. I'm sure that should have its quirks as well, but at least you'd be painting with your predefined palette, if you have to stick with one. EDIT: In fact, you don't even need to have the gradient divided into equal parts if you don't want to.

allluckyseven Yup, a number of people have preferred to use a stepped gradient instead of the full layer stack. It works quite well once you set up the gradient, but it definitely limits the flexibility that the full layer stack provides like changing the color count, tweaking the curves, etc. There is no right or wrong answer though - whatever works best for you

I seem to be having trouble layering these since each time i clip them downwards my canvas defaults to the gradient in the paint layer, while disregarding everything I'm clipping it onto. Although it seems to work without clipping the layers but I'm not certain? I'm using Photoshop CC btw.

I imagine it would work fine if you export the render in black and white and then make it the paint layer.

Im missing something here? Im DEFINITELY missing something here, how the hell you paint ANYTHING like this? I don't get it. You know when he strokes the brush about the screen and make these 'shapes', thats about all i can do. 8:16 Thats just what i could do, Nothing.
