What a glorious sound. I remember this from my childhood, frightening yet somehow comforting too, especially from a long way off.

Now THAT'S a locomotive air horn! We have those on some of our Locomotives down here in Australia, and I have a set of Leslie S5T's of my own. In one word? BRILLIANT!!!!

This was always the most eerie/scariest sounding horn to me. That deep tone, it does not sound happy, but like hell!

Gotta love that classic Seaboard horn. It is music to my ears.

In the '80's I lived out in the country about 2 miles West of the old Pere Marquette double track main between Toledo, Ohio and Saginaw, Michigan. These horns appeared on beat up , old, Chrissie GP -7's and GP - 9's as they roared Northbound to Plymouth, Michigan and the big junction there with the Detroit/ Grand Haven line. The sound would echo seemingly forever on a foggy night.

Up close the horn sounds with such euphony, as the train passes you in all its voluminous glory, but when heard distantly, it is best as its haunting echo is heard.
@ACLTony12 жыл бұрын
I remember these horns well. I saw the Seaboard Coast Line in action back in the 70s. A good number of their U-boats had RS5T-RR0 horns and I remember that sound well. Seemed like they were everywhere and now, just like the U33B and U36B, they're virtually gone from Class 1 railroads. The Nathan K5LA horns, which sounded sweet, have been gradually replaced by the K5LLA which is deliberately dischorded. So the numbers of old K5LAs are slowly disappearing but there are still plenty in service.

I knew a guy who mounted one on the top of his van. He had a large air tank and an air compressor in the van as well. He would drive by and scare pedestrians. His favorite thing was to get behind slow drivers in the fast lane and blast them. Those were good times.

I love the K5LA best for nostalgic reasons, but Leslies have a real 'don't f**k with me' kind of sound. I'm surprised anyone would cross right in front of a locomotive with a horn as loud as that, and not jump even a little.

OMG! I love it and share your sadness about the horns becoming more and more rare. We have the FRA to thank for this....I guess they don't want someone to know a train was coming before it hits them...so they favor the new quiet horns.

I believe the horn is muffled in the cab. Though in this case their eard would be damaged since the horn it literally above their cab whereas lots of trains the horns is pushed back to the middle

The reason this horn sounds so creepy is because, while it's supposed to play a B (dominant, not major) 9th chord, the tones drift a bit and it ends up a full diminished chord. That's the one they all call "the devil's chord".
