Back in the early 1960a, my parents owned a restaurant. I was 13-14 years old and very much into model railroading and rail-fanning. Once a month, I would accompany my dad on a drive into Vernon to visit the Real McCoy Meat Company where he purchased all his pastrami, corned beef, and roasting beef. At that time, Vernon was the ‘’meat packing center’ of Southern California and all the big meat packers had their operations there. The railroads brought in both live animals for slaughter as well as butchered/dressed hogs, cattle, sheep, and goats. As a result, there was a ton of switching operations involving stock cars, iced and mechanical reefers, offal cars, brine tank cars, etc. All the switching operations at the various meat packing houses ALWAYS involved street switching moves. The motive power included mostly SW type diesel-electric switchers and I recall seeing AT&ST, SP, and UP logos. Great railroading operations!

And boy did it stink. I worked near Soto st. in the early 90’s and there was a fat rendering plant near there and the smell in the afternoon was so bad it made me want to vomit.

I used to go there quite a bit on a job I had more than thirty years ago. I always looked forward to it because of the railfan aspect. I miss the old 9th Street wigwag! Nine tracks, one signal. In fact, the last time I was in Vernon was when I was aboard Amtrak pulling into Union Station! Great video as always.

I absolutely love it! The switching and the graffiti. Here in the East they usually don't tag locomotives so it's interesting and entertaining. (I don't condone the spraying of graffiti on Private Railroad Property but it is cool).

The Union Pacific 1150, aka " Graffiti Dripper ", yeah, it's graffiti-riddled, but it does has a little bit notarity...of sorts. A Local, no doubt about it, great catches by the way! At least the face looks decent.

There’s something you don’t see every day: railroad tracks in an alleyway and a locomotive rolling on said rails. Buildings on each side.

It's a losing battle. They repaint it, and the graffiti will reappear in a week.

I feel like we have just given up on Graffiti. If nothing else you can repaint the Snow Plow and The Fuel Tank. Something is better than nothing. Heck if I knew I wouldn’t get in trouble I would do it for free on my dime.
