Surprised how most other reviews missed the overprovisioning and pixel shifting this monitor has, that's probably the most important anti burn-in measure in my view and should be present on any OLED display for PC use.

This issue will never be really solved in organic LEDs. So unless if you have lots of money to spare, I would wait for non-organic LEDs, which can do much better without all the nonsense about the dimming of corners, pixel-shifting and other measures.

I am so glad they added pixel over provisioning for pixel shift. I ended up turning off pixel shift for my LG C1. At first, I created my own custom res where I removed 20 pixels from each edge to do my own pixel provisioning, 3800 x 2120, and this worked pretty well for MOST games. But not all games work will with custom res, so I ended up just turning it off. I kept wondering why they didnt just make the panel 3880 x 2200 to fix this problem.

Thanks for your great review, Vincent. This new gaming monitor from LG has impressive performance, and I'm glad to see that it doesn't cost an insane amount of money. Later this year, during Black Friday sales, It will be intriguing to see how deeply LG may discount this monitor from its introductory price of $999.99. I'll add that I'm still waiting for LG - or any other manufacturer - to release the monitor of my dreams, which would essentially be LG's all-purpose 42" OLED TV/monitor but in a 32" size and at a reasonable price. A display of that type currently does not exist on the market.

For a while I was worried it's not going to be as good as I had imagined but I think the people who are disappointed got the monitor for the wrong reasons. Been waiting for your review of this. Other comments mention: your review details (especially things other reviewers missed such as overprovisioning) are top-notch. I've been using my 27GR95QE for a few weeks now and love it. My only major complaint (after fighting windows to get text rendering suitable) is the color banding I get on HDMI with a 10 bit or 12 bit signal in SDR content. Quantization errors, banding, whatever it is, it's jarring and noticeable, especially on KZbin. Did not have the issue when using DisplayPort and an 8bit signal with this display. (I forget if I had the issue on HDMI 8bit). Of course DP1.4 cannot do 1440p240hz 10bit w/o DSC, and DSC was appalling; so I use HDMI 2.1with a 12 bit signal. Oddly enough, 12 bit seemed to error less extremely than 10 bit.

Why would you use hdmi on these types of monitors makes 0 sense whatsoever You splurged on the monitor couldn't get a display port cable
@soulofjacobeh
@soulofjacobeh Жыл бұрын
@@jgvtc559 yeah I'm just going to assume you didn't read or didn't understand what was said. No worries. As mentioned/implied, DP1.4 cannot do above 8bit for 1440p240hz. You have to use hdmi if you want above an 8bit signal without using DSC (compression that doesn't work well at the absolute limit of connector bandwidth). I also said I tested both DP and HDMI. So clearly I had a DP cable on-hand. The display (and Nvidia GPUs) doesn't/don't have DP2.0.
@ryo-kai8587
@ryo-kai8587 Жыл бұрын
@@jgvtc559 They just explained that; DP can't do 1440p 240hz at 10-bit without needing to use DSC (compression). Apparently HDMI 2.1 can even do it at 12-bit. We're in an awkward spot in the industry where cards like the 4090 can push crazy FPS, but they still use Displayport 1.4 which caps at 1440p 240hz 8-bit, or 4k 120hz. This can be increased with DSC, but it's lossy compression that's best to avoid. Cards as powerful as that _really_ need DP 2.0 which can even handle 4k 240fps without DSC.

Got one of these for competitive games, and I love it. While it's the same refresh rate as my Odyssey Neo G9 (which I'm planning on replacing with the LG G3 when it releases) it just FEELS so much faster, probably due to the 0.1 ms pixel response time compared to the 1-2 ms response time of the G9. OLED is generally the FPS players dream. 240hz needs 4.16ms or faster pixel response. General LCD gaming monitors cannot hit these numbers in full start to stop pixel response times (don't care for "industry standard" 10-90, its 2023 not the 1960's....) Generally gaming monitors full pixel response is upwards of 6-8ms averages. Meaning because pixels are the limiting factor, refresh rates that look "perfect" would be 125hz to 166.67hz (8ms = 125hz, 6ms = 166.67hz). The OLED monitors (qd-oled, and now this panel) have sub 1ms pixel response with HDR disabled (99.9% of video games on the market don't have HDR) which means IN THEORY, OLED is the only display capable of doing true 1000hz displays (granted, the display has to support 1000hz and your pc needs to be capable of outputting 1000fps which is really hard to do). Thusly, this 240hz OLED will be THE FIRST 240hz to exist that can display "perfect" 240hz thanks to its insanely fast pixel response. I can't wait to see people put 240hz OLED side by side to the best typical LCD 240hz displays, and show people in person how much smoother the OLED will be. Sadly my QD-OLED is limited to 175hz.... and even worse, BOTH OLED are missing out on black frame insertion, which helps further improve motion clarity.... THE DAY we get a 240hz OLED that includes proper scan line style black frame insertion is the day we FINALLY overcome the legacy of CRT for FPS gaming. New age gamers don't realize that CRT with its native 60hz mode actually looks better in motion clarity than today's 240hz LCD's. The 240hz OLED will be the first to get close, but still need BFI to "beat" CRT motion clarity. For those that don't know, a CRT is analog so there is 0 input lag. And then for the "pixels" that get "scanned in" with the electron gun, it can paint a "pixel" in about 0.2ms and by 1ms more than 80% of that "pixel" has faded away to black. This effect in our human eyes causes motion clarity to be extremely high. I say "pixel" with quotes because CRT's don't have pixels in the sense of an LCD. The phosphor coating on the glass is excited with said electron gun which creates a "blotch" of color. Which is technically a pixel, but not actually a pixel. I could go into more detail but I wont, this is simple enough for most of you reading this. TLDR CRT is still the best for FPS gaming due to insane motion clarity. And the funny part is, 60hz CRT's weren't all there was, we had 120hz CRT's which were even more insane in terms of motion clarity. I feel bad for people today who never experienced the joy of CRT FPS gaming.... it was "next level" and we downgraded for smaller/lighter screens aka LCD. Anyway, super high fps displays are generally useless ONLY because pixel response isn't fast enough. SECONDARY wise if you can't get the fps, then the high refresh rate is also useless. People buying 360hz gaming displays, which cannot actually display 360hz properly (pixel response too low thus motion blur) and then they run freesync or gsync because they only get 80-150fps in next gen gaming titles.... And they don't realize the biggest failure of LCD is that they are tuned for max refresh rate, when you run a 360hz LCD with g-sync at about 120hz average, your pixel response LOWER, becoming EVEN WORSE than at 360hz.... which can really break low refresh rate gaming (more motion blur). Meanwhile OLED doesn't suffer that issue, any refresh rate, doesn't matter, pixel response remains exactly the same from the highest refresh rate to the lowest.

"...no USB-C Ports" - Please clarify the use case. Are you using it as a charging/data transfer hub to the PC? If so, wouldn't the USB2 port you showed be a slave port to the PC's host? And from there, a USB-A to USB-C adapter could be used for phones and small external drives/peripherals. Thoughts?

Vincent i want to ask you a question ?! How come you never commented on LG oled tvs color tint, their oled models have suffered from a reddish/pinkish tint, some say it is because of the reflective coating but still for a videophile like yourself you should have noticed it and warned ppl about it

Another thing to keep in mind is that LG's hardware calibration enabled image modes, as well the factory tuned sRGB mode, come with a significant processing latency penalty as per Rtings testing, which makes them really suboptimal for gaming. I don't know if it's standard behaviour (at least for sRGB mode) for WCG displays (I really do hope it's not), but for me this is a huge concern since I'm very sensitive to both color accuracy and input lag, and the main reason I was extremely disappointed after getting incredibly enthusiastic about LG's model. I wonder if Alienware models show the same behaviour with their sRGB (Creator) image modes.

thanks for the great review, as an oled tv owner I will never buy another lcd monitor and was 1 click away from ordering a 42"tv as monitor last year but it was just too large, couldn't care less about HDR it's a bad gimmick I've seen 542 movies in HDR AND SDR next to each other 9/10 an upscaled 1080p sdr looks better on a 77" oled 4k tv than the 4k hdr

Hi Vincent, I found something really interesting with this panel. I was hoping you could help explain it. It has to do with tone mapping and values reported in the service menu. I looked around in the service menu (using the service remote that work for LG OLED TVs like the C1), and I found something VERY interesting. I thought you may be interested too. This panel actually shows you the current tone curve that's being used as well as the currentmaxcll that's being output by the content. Below is a link to an AVSForum thread I created if you'd like to take a look. I'd be super interested to hear your thoughts. For example, one interesting thing I found is that the panel reports cyberpunk 2077 using a 500 nit tone curve? Also, autoHDR games and games that respect the system level calibration on win11 say "603" for the tone curve, which I suspect means no tone mapping applied. Other games show a 1000 nit curve. I wanted to reconcile this with your review since you mentioned that it follows the PQ curve with a sharp roll off at 650 nits (same as Monitors Unboxed explained). Would you be able to let me know if these values are accurate, and if I should be looking at them? I listed a few more games in the threads and what the panel reports. I'm trying to figure out which values to set in games for peak brightness that do not respect system level calibration. www.avsforum.com/threads/i-wanted-to-share-some-interesting-things-ive-found-by-going-into-the-service-menu-of-a-27gr95qe-b.3273378/#post-62498695

Been waiting on this.. I have a 27GR95QE for reference & everything he says is spot-on. Gaming, it’s a masterpiece. 240hz, super low input lag, buttery smooth. Trouble comes in a few different factors: When there’s too much light due to lower brightness. Calibration isn’t the best, but Gamer 1 gets close enough for most. HDR dimming does get annoying, but manageable. Overall, I’m happy with my purchase so far. I can’t wait to see if BFI will get introduced via software in the future. Chief of BlurBusters does say that this monitor is very software BFI-friendly, so we’ll see.. Definitely have a light-controlled room for this one.. Context: Also have a 42 C2. I play competitive on monitor, 4K eye candy single player on C2.

Can I ask, in very low (or NO) lighting room conditions, is the picture quality as good as the C2? I don't mean resolution, I'm more specifically talking about the blacks (and contrast)......do they seem as deep as they do on the C2/oled phones with their glossy coatings?
@CarnivoryHODL
@CarnivoryHODL Жыл бұрын
@@thepadster123 I’ll be honest, glossy will be a tad bit better, even in low to no light rooms, but think it’d be something you get used to. It’ll vary person to person. Me personally for my use case, doesn’t bother me at all, I just like 4K for non-competitive, story games.

Zorz gaming made a review of the monitor, including this topic. He inferred that 2.1 had less lag than DisplayPort at 12 bit color depth. Although he didn't have the measuring tools for it, 2.1 has larger bandwidth so roll with it if your GPU supports it.

Hey man, is the 27 inch LG less blue than the C2 Evo 42 inch? When set my C2 to warm 50 it still is too blueish like a filter over the image (blueish maybe with a little bit green?) and lighting is too yellowish.

So as a software developer who will 100% be looking at their monitor with somewhat static IDEs web browsers that sort of thing, for certainly unhealthy amounts of time, and who has a seperate monitor for the locked bar/task bar, would this be a monumentally stupid purchasing decision due to burn in? I typically expect my monitors to last 5-10 years.
