If your TV only has [Black Level] "Low" or "High" (for example LG C9 outside PC Mode), then the correct settings would be: - [RGB Range] "Limited" on the PS5; and - [Black Level] "Low" on the TV.

Thank you HDTVTest, your videos had a big influence on my decision. PS5's are nowhere to be found, my 2016 Sony Bravia is over 4 years old and I was wondering if it was worth it or not to upgrade my TV first until the PS5 becomes more widely available. Which TV is best for PS5 and how to best optimize the settings is exactly what I wanted to know, and these highly informative review videos answer everything. So glad to discover this channel. I love my Bravia and didn't plan on replacing it when I get the PS5. But the price, picture quality, input lag time and features have improved so much in the last 4 years that I think now is a great time to buy. I'm very partial to Sony products and looked long and hard at the X900H, but this LG looks unreal so I'm going for it next week. I enabled HGIG and went through the HDR calibration and did all that properly and now the lighting/shading is far more appropriately balanced and the bloom on games like Ghost of Tsushima is nice and not retina-burning staring-into-the-literal-sun level of intensity, however, the PS5's video is too dark (despite the whites on the TV's menus being nice and bright (it's an LG CX,) so I know adjusting the TV isn't the answer despite it being a potential workaround,) and now all the colors pop about as much as a TV without HDR, so that's great. I can't decide if this is better or worse, honestly. When I open the secret menu on the CX it says "VRR Information" not "FreeSync Information" and at the top mine says 60.0Hz, not 5.5Hz. This video may need an update too. Under the HDR settings there are now three options: "off," "always on," and "on when supported." In the "Screen and Video" menu of the PS5, there's now a new setting called "VRR" which can be set to either "off" or "automatic." Underneath this option there's a switch where you can enable or disable "Apply to Unsupported Games." Don't know if these matter or what, but the video seems to lack Information that's now available.
@markucla Жыл бұрын
Nick, Not sure if you've heard this already, but since this video came out, they fixed that 5.5hz setting, it was a bug, also VRR wasnt available at the time of this video which is why he didnt have the option. Neither was HDR "on when supported" available.

I would recommend setting Consoles to Limited (Video) range and setting the display to "low" or the equivalent. All content works and is locked to a correct black level standard, regardless of the app running. The problem I have with "auto" is that there can be some picture modes on a variety of tv models which do not offer "auto" as an option in their specific picture modes - just "low" or "high." Therefore, to cover all the bases and all cases, the above combination will be a "set and forget" strategy that will also make you as the end user understand how your TV and console is setup for this specific function :)

@HDTVTest Can you explain your “RGB Range Auto” recommendation further? I was surprised by this recommendation with the PS5 since I think you've typically recommended forcing "RGB Range Limited", and I think others such as @DigitalFoundry & @mylifeingaming have typically recommended "RGB Range Limited" as well. For example, from the LG CX/C9 settings video for Xbox Series X you stated: "One thing to take care of is to check that black level is reproduced correctly. So Low would be the correct value, and I would be inclined to switch it on Low all the time. Whereas if you selected High it will be expanding the signal to Full Range which may create a bit more banding with the wrong input signal, so Low is generally the best idea." I've found that my 2015 LG OLED and even my newer 2018 & 2019 LG OLEDs will occasionally not detect the range correctly when set to Auto. With that said, I've always exclusively used RGB Range Full if I'm connecting to a broadcast/professional/PC monitor as these seem to expect 0-255 all the time (unless calibrated for 16-235).

@alexg91552 жыл бұрын
Very late but I'll reply anyway. The math is not wrong, however you are forgetting Hblank and Vblank, "pixels" you don't see, which bump the bandwidth up to almost 18GBps. That should fit in HDMI 2.0, but that speed is the aggregate (6+6+6) and is never reached. You actually get 80% of that, which is not enough for 4K60 RGB 10bit even without Vblank and Hblank factored in.

Outside his auto black, and hgig settings. You should just let hdr settings be default, and just drag the sharpness down to 0. Also enable HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color, and Instant Game Response. Color should be 50 at default. Turn off any energy saving modes. Hdr will set full OLED 100, Contrast 100, Brightness 50. Just make sure after all setting to calibrate the console hdr at the end. That’s it for hdr games as most all games are HDR. For fall guys and say older 1080p that Sony support it. I’d use dark or bright pro mode on this tv...last two options. Rtings has a good basic setup for sdr content. For that game play I have to disable hdr in the ps5 settings for now as they don’t work right as explained. Not all games are set to rgb range to "full" by default. When you play games on 120hz, the rgb range are actually set to "limited" by default. I tested this by changing it to "full" while running a 120hz game and the screen flickers to make changes.

VINCENT! You forgot to look into the "Saved Data and Game/App Settings " => "Game presets" => "Resolution Mode" and to then run your HDMI bandwidth tests on games, as this setting (allegedly) *increases* the lanes used via software to 40gbs, and, has a knock-on effect for applications, too - like playing movies/discs. It's another rumour - need a professional to squash it!

In that case, [Black Level] "Low" on TV; & [RGB Range] "Limited" on PS5.

@@JoShUa95160 yes. Not only limited has 220 steps (for 8 bit) per luma and 225 per Cb Cr in place of 256 steps in FULL 8 bit, but there is also higher luminance possible in limited if you will use higher than 235 (counting from 0 for luma Y) or 240 (CB, CR). @@radry100 I tried both different ports and different cables, no difference. It's a C9 + PC Mode + FRL (HDMI 2.1 signaling) issue that doesn't appear to occur on the CX for some reason. Perhaps that was whatever that got LG to limit the chip to 40 Gbps in the CX.

True, same thing here. They mostly occur in TV cold boot or when you summon the bottom home menu. It is rare in games, you might not even see it occur. I did see it yesterday in a dark game, though, so that was enough for me to disable it. One curious thing in my case, though: My Black Level is still Auto in my HDR Game settings, even after I changed the PC label to Game console label. Only High and Low are selectable, but it is now still set to Auto somehow?? It also works as Auto would, so I haven't touched it. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the SDR Game settings...

IMPORTANT FOR LG C9 OR OLDER USERS: If you have LG C9 you have to set dynamic tone mapping to ‘HGiG’ and black level to ‘LOW’ (because it doesn’t have black level ‘auto’ like the CX) and set the RGB range on PS4/PS5 to ‘limited’. (If your tv supports black level ‘auto’ you should select that and also put the RGB range to ‘auto’ on your ps4/ps5.) You’re welcome. (The LG C9 should be in HDR mode to change the dynamic tone mapping) HDR summary: 1/3: adjust until the logo completely disappears 2/3: adjust until the logo completely disappears 3/3: set the logo to the darkest setting possible (if you’re in a pitch dark room, if you’re not in a pitch dark room and there’s some light in the room you can set it a little higher).

I have this exact setup, and I haven't used the PS5 for streaming at all. Not only does the LG CX UI work well for the apps, PS5 does not output Dolby Vision, and Atmos has to be specifically activated in the Blu Ray player while a disc is in. Between Netflix, Disney+ and Vudu, I've only used the drive for game discs. And unless the LG CX is lying when I start a Vision-capable title through the streaming apps, I can verify that Vision works, and my receiver displays Atmos when it starts. Assuming I remember to switch from Nueral:X at the start.

What about the LG input icon, should that be set to PC? I'm still not entirely sure what that icon does and why it changes things. Last you said that was the only way to enable 4:4:4 capability. Does this still apply here?

To elaborate a bit more, what does the PC icon ultimately do? 4:2:2 vs 4:4:4 ? or maybe 4:4:2 vs 4:4:4 ? I'm kind of failing to see why this option is even there, i.e. why isn't everything set to the PC icon mode always?

Astro's playroom is affected by PS5's HDR calibration. You can even take screenshots with different HDR calibration settings and compare them in the gallery. From my test the highlights are tone mapped differently, but the overall brightness remains the same. It would be interesting to see a video about that. I think you should mention that HGIG should be disabled when playing games that don't support it, such as Last of us 2.
