I think the impromptu family barbecue would make me feel worse. Because at least when they leave immediately you can get on with your day and forget about them. With the bbq, you’re stuck there. Likely for hours. Just having to fend for yourself against grandma, the parents, and the annoying little siblings/cousins while your date ignores you and eats chips from afar.
