"Don't Be Cruel," "Rock Wit'cha" and "On Our Own" are some of my favorites of Bobby's. He was young and with a lot of talent in the 80's.... then the drugs took his sanity and then he married Whitney Houston and their mutual drug addictions were destructive to both of them.

Simply put, this was Bobby at his best! This Sophomore album launched Bobby Brown into orbit and created the New Jack swing era. Also this launched the solo carrers of New Edition spin offs and made Bobby Brown the King of R&B.

Michael Jackson loved this song! "I’ll never forget this one time we were driving in the car. Normally we’d listen to classical music when we were driving, but this time I had the radio on an R & B station andBobby Brown’s “My Prerogative” came on. When the song ended, Mr. Jackson said , “Bill, can you play that again?” I said, “I’m sorry, sir. That wasn’t a CD. That was the radio.” So he asked me to go out and get a copy of the album for him. I went to Best Buy, picked it up, and for the next few days, he had me play that song again and again, all day long. Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative” was the only thing Michael Jackson ever asked to listen to in the car besides classical music. He said he wanted to record it, make it part of his comeback. He played it over and over and over, singing along until he’d memorized every last word: “I don’t need permission. Make my own decision. That’s my prerogative.” He’d be in the backseat singing those words, and he sang that shit with conviction. It’s my prerogative. Do what the fuck I want to do.I keep that song on my iPhone today. I listen to it every now and then. But I don’t hear it the way Bobby Brown sings it. I hear it the way Michael Jackson used to sing it. Just leave me alone. I made this money, you didn’t. I was 13 when this song was released and I remember learning a new word, "prerogative." So anytime my mom would say no or get on my case I'd mimic Bobby and say "it's my prerogative!" She didn't know what it meant 😄 I was a young teen with punk rock attitude but I loved the r&b that was out during this era. I remember being so proud I could keep up with "singing" the lyrics to L.L. Cool J's "I Need Love" and Rob Base's "It Takes Two," among others. 😁 Such a great period of music! More reactions please! Perhaps I Need Love if you haven't heard it yet.

The King of R&B...Teddy Riley was a up and coming producer, and he and Bobby made magic together. I think this song really made people know that he was here to stay. New Edition were out there doing good, but Bobby had the world in his hands. He is now reunited with New Edition, and he can't dance like he used to, but he still sounds good

This was the ultimate culmination of the harder driving RnB from the late 70'S that used the synthesizer for the baseline, by groups like The Gap Band, Parliament Funkadelic, Rick James, etc. and by the extreme talents of Teddy Riley, the main member of Guy, whose New Jack Swing aound was a tour de force in the late 80's. Teddy's sound was unmistakable, funky and needless to say, an instantaneous hit in waiting. It was in RnB and crossed into hip hop as collaborative efforts merged the two genres. It even flowed into movie soundtracks, such as New Jack City and more. It defined the whole late 80's vibe.

Before this song came out news and people were gossiping about Bobby Brown and what he did with his money, (which was his own business by the way). And they were saying all kinds of stuff about a black man having so much money and what he was doing with it and how he shouldn’t be doing this or that. As if none of us were blessed with free will. It was quite hypocritical because Rockstars we’re doing what ever the heck they wanted and nobody ever told him nothing about it. But the minute a black man does the same exact thing oh it’s gonna destroy every young person’s brain. That’s when he came out with this song and he shoved it all in their face like poo💩 pie. So when I first heard this song I was cracking up laughing.😹

The premise of this music video is very similar to Janet Jackson's Control music video: the driving a car to the gig, making an entrance by coming down an elevator as opposed to coming down a swing, a faux or mock concert audience and "live" performance set to the recording for the sake of the music video, dressed in all black suit and the headset with a microphone and of course the dancing and interactions with the band members. They both have a Terry in their respective music video.
