The record is a concept album about an alien who comes to Earth and becomes a rockstar messiah figure, so the lyrics are mostly literal, though there's things like The Spiders From Mars, which is the name of his band and not a bunch of actual spiders from the planet Mars. The whole record is amazing.

Thanks so much for reacting to this amazing song by David Bowie. This song is part of a concept album titled "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars." Ziggy is an alien who comes to earth and becomes are rock star. The Spiders from Mars is the name of his band. This track deals details how Ziggy, like many rock stars develops a huge ego, which leads to his eventual downfall. The song is told from the viewpoint of one of his band members, hence the lyrics 'he became the special man/ then we were Ziggy's band.'; 'Making love to his ego/Ziggy sucked up into his mind.' and 'When the kids had killed the man/I had to break up the band.' The song is much easier to understand when listening to the entire album, but every track on it is excellent on its own. The reference to 'cat', is a slang term used years ago, mainly in music culture, to refer a man, just like the word 'dude' or 'bro' is used today. 'Screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo/ Like some cat from Japan' is thought to refer to the eye make up he would wear onstage which would make his eyes appear to be asian in appearance. Other great songs from this album are 'Five Years', 'Starman', 'Moonage Daydream', and Rock'n'Roll Suicide. Thanks again for doing more Bowie. Hope to hear more.

Something that just came to my mind that I never thought about before: The "screwed up eyes" line could also be inspired by the fact that one of Bowie's own eyes was, in fact, screwed up.

I the early 90's I was fortunate to work a MTV gig with Bowie at Giant's Stadium. We had been building his stage for a week, and during the Production Load In( lights, sound, backline and scenery) before that night's show, Bowie recorded spots for the " I Want My MTV" advertising campaign in different languages. Although he was very busy, besides preparing for the show, he had dozens of interviews to do... But he took the time to shake each of our hands, learn our names , and make us feel part of the effort. He was a True British Gentleman! That night was the Very Last Time he performed the song "Ziggy Stardust". Growing up in the 60's and 70's ,being able to work with Bowie, in this minor way was quite special to me

You can experience the most emotional / passionate painful song on this album with his 5 years. He changed his persona many times over his career so don't get stuck on the 'Space' part. There is a full R&B era with the Thin White Duke, and on and on and on. Never try to tie Bowie down.

Worth mentioning that his band the Spiders from Mars were integral to the sound especially guitarist Mick Ronson. Bowie wrote the songs and sang, but the band members created their own parts to go along with it. Ronson is a guitar god and he brought Bowie's sound to a new level of fame. Bowie sounded a lot more like folk music before he worked with the Spiders. The hard rock sound which was very popular at the time, was from the Spiders.

Bowie would change alter egos and personas about as often as people change clothes. The thing is that Bowie didn't really have a set sound. As Ziggy, his siund was like this, but as the Thin White Duke, he would enbrace more of an r&b and soul sound. Young Americans, Fame, Fashion would be great examples of that part of his catalog. The man never stopped evolving until the end of his life.

In the late 60's 70's music was deep in stream-of-consciousness and metaphorical writing. One line didn't necessarily have anything to do with the line before or what came after. It leaves it up to the individual listener to interpret how they hear it. I love it! Songwriting today is too literal and predictable = boring.

Great reaction!! There is a reason David Bowie is known as 'The Chameleon' - he takes on, and becomes, so many different personas, and the music reflects that change! He's nearly impossible to pigeon hole on style & genre! So now if you want to sample another 'personae' of Bowie's, one called the Thin White Duke, take the following for a spin: Modern Love, Let's Dance & China Girl - all off the album Let's Dance. It's an 80's release with really funky grooves (thanks to Nile Rodgers of Chic fame!). And by contrast, something from pre-Space Oddity - The Man Who Sold The World. RIP Bowie!

Spiders from Mars was the name of the band he was touring with at the time. As far as this song goes, I’ve never really considered it to have a lot to do with the space theme that some of the other songs on the album do. I’ve always taken. Ziggy is being just a rockstar. Check out something like Starman. It might be more what you expected this one to be. Great album though probably one of my favourite albums of all time.

Please react to his song “China Girl”. It’s such a brilliant piece of songwriting (co-written with Iggy Pop), and the official video is brilliant as well. Ziggy was also the character he adopted amd the band was thr spiders from Mars. Oddly, David was super shy and had trouble performing. Actually tried to get another person to be Ziggy. But he found when he played a character, with flamboyant outfits, the stage fright disappeared. After the band did Ziggy Stardust to its limit, he decided to stop it. Thus the having to break up the band. On to the next character invention he embodied.

It's called "Glam" rock. Bowie basically invented it. There were other bands like T. Rex that did it as well, but Bowie generally gets the credit for the genre.

I should also mention that Bowie went through a number of phases in his career. He was always bringing out new characters new new everything. Ziggy Stardust was definitely one of the characters one of the personas that he used but it’s far from the only one. The other one that you’ll hear quite often is the thin white Duke. And they all just referred a different personas that he used at various points in time various albums various parts of his career. He was all over the map as far as style goes very difficult to pin down.
