This is a great example of why you shouldn’t judge too much based on 911 calls, because this guy sounded awkward as hell. He just seemed very disconnected from it all. “It’s a body. It’s dead. It doesn't sound like they couldn't have lived a comfortable enough life within the means they already had available to them. It also doesn't seem like his brother would have disowned him or cut him off if he had fessed up to the missing money. His brother already seemed to be caring to a fault, and willing to help provide for the family... even going so far as to tolerate/participate in disability fraud. He seemed completely charitable in his handling of the situation, given that his kids college funds were being drained and his business had serious amounts of money missing... All while he was paying them a salary on top of their government benefits. His own attorneys believe he is guilty. They withdrew in March 2021, citing a "conflict of interest" which is commonly used legal parlance for being unable to defend a client due to something incriminating that has been revealed that without a reasonable doubt is evidence of guilt. There are the occasional other situation where this happens but my understanding is that in this case, that's the reason.

Lawyers defend guilty people all the time, people they know are guilty; that's how the system works. The criminal defense lawyer will tell you that his or her job is to test the state's evidence, to challenge the government's attempt to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt before an impartial jury. If lawyers wouldn't defend clients they believed to be guilty, there would be a very small corps of criminal defense lawyers in this country.
